1 Candidate Brief Lecturer in Politics/ International Relations Reference: R Salary: Grade 8 or 9, 32,548 to 47,722 per annum Basis: Full Time Closing Date: hours BST on Saturday 12 May 2018 Interview Date: Friday 08 June 2018

2 Politics and International Relations at Aston We are looking to appoint up to two exceptional candidates to our thriving Department. We will consider applications from all areas of the discipline, including any area specialism. One post is to replace a colleague who taught International Relations, so it would be helpful if one new appointee could teach this field. We would also be interested in raising the proportion of our department with experience using quantitative research methods. However, these are not stipulations and we remain very open to applications from all parts of our discipline. The Politics and International Relations (PIR) Department within the School of Languages and Social Sciences is one of the most successful and highly regarded within Aston University. In terms of percentage 3*/4* research, our submission to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) in the Area Studies unit of assessment was ranked 2 nd nationally for the quality of outputs and joint 3 rd overall. Our aim for the planned 2020 REF (where we would again anticipate submitted to the Area Studies unit of assessment, under the auspices of the Aston Centre for Europe) is to maintain and, where possible, improve on this level of quality. We are leading the Area Studies strand of a consortium of universities on the ESRC s doctoral training programme. Both the undergraduate programmes (around 120 FTEs admitted annually) and postgraduate programmes (around 40 FTEs admitted annually) have undergone a period of successful expansion and development in recent years. At PG level, we have set up two innovative two-year double MA programmes, the first with the prestigious Institut d Etudes Politiques (IEP), Lille, France and the second with the Otto-Friedrich-Universität, Bamberg, Germany, and the third with the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. We also have a new programme in International Relations and Security with the Metropolitan University in Prague. The double MA programmes are complemented by PIR s existing (oneyear) MA Programmes in The European Union and International Relations, International Relations and Global Governance, as well as an exciting Joint MA in Multilevel Governance and International Relations, delivered jointly with the Institut d Etudes Politiques, Rennes, France. Our excellent results are also reflected in our excellent rankings. We were ranked 13 th in the country in the Sunday Times league table of Politics and International Relations courses, out of some 78 institutions, and the 2017 Guardian league table has us placed 17 th. The most recent NSS results, which appeared in August 2017, showed overall satisfaction from Politics and International Relations students approaching 94%. Many of our research-active staff work under the umbrella of the Aston Centre for Europe (ACE). Established in 2009, ACE has rapidly made a name for itself as a leading centre for the study of Europe in the UK, a position which our performance in REF 2014 underscores. It recently became a Jean-Monnet Centre of Excellence. Our staff numbers have grown strongly in recent years and we now have a young and dynamic team covering a range of research areas in place: Dr Parveen Akhtar, Lecturer in Politics and International Relations (British Politics; Politics of Islam, Party Politics and Candidate Selection); Dr Amanda Beattie, Lecturer in Politics and International Relations (International Political Thought; Political Theory; Political Theology; International Security Studies; International Relations Theory; Ethics & International Affairs) Professor Nathaniel Copsey, Professor of Politics; EU External Relations; European Neighbourhood Policy, Polish and Ukrainian Politics, European Politics) NB: Professor Copsey has been on secondment to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from May Dr Helena Farrand-Carrapico, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations (European Union politics and policies; Justice and Home Affairs; security and cyber-security; area of freedom security and justice).
