1 Key Term Sheet UNIT #4: IMPERIALISM Chapter 7, Sections 1-3 (Pages ) Name: ANSWER KEY Hour: Term Imperialism Definition Refers to when a larger more powerful country exerts influence over another smaller weaker country Fredrick Turner s Frontier Thesis Western Hemisphere A book written by Frederick Jackson Turner that discussed the significance of the American western frontier coming to a close (what do Americans do now), caused psychological trauma, America needs to keep expanding America looks beyond their own political borders and focuses on bringing the entire Western Hemisphere under their control Monroe Doctrine (1823) President Monroe formulates American Foreign Policy which states that the Western Hemisphere is going to be looked after by the U.S. alone and that the European powers should stay out of our neck of the woods Spanish-American War (1898) Conflict between the U.S. and Spain over the control of Cuba (a sugarcane rich Caribbean island) USS Maine A U.S. naval ship which exploded in Havana Harbor (off the coast of Cuba) in 1898 Theodore Roosevelt Secretary of the Navy in 1898, led a cavalry unit called the Rough Riders in the fight against Spain during the Spanish-American War Roosevelt s Corollary (1904) Theodore Roosevelt s Foreign Policy, was an extension of the Monroe Doctrine, stated that the U.S. would intervene in any country that showed itself to be uncivilized Alfred T. Mahan U.S. Naval Officer, wrote an influential book that advocated for the rapid buildup of the U.S. navy
