July 19, 2016 Taking cognizance of the numerous casualties and injuries in the clashes between the protestors and the security forces in the valley of Jammu and Kashmir, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary of the state calling for reports in the matter. The commission has given two weeks time to the concerned authorities to respond in this regard. Issuing a statement, NHRC said that it is closely watching the incidents of violence in the aftermath of the killing of Hizbul Mujahiden commander Burhan Wani in an encounter with the security forces on the July 8.

The commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports about numerous casualties and injuries in the clashes between the protesters and the security forces in the Valley in Jammu and Kashmir. It has observed that it is closely watching the incidents of violence in the aftermath of the killing of alleged militant Burhan Wani in an encounter with the security forces on July 8, 2016, the NHRC said in a statement. Expressing its utmost concern over the developments, the Commission has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary and government of Jammu and Kashmir calling for reports in the matter. The Commission has given two weeks to respond, it said.

Expressing its utmost concern over the developments, the commission has issued notices to the Union home secretary and the chief secretary of government of Jammu and Kashmir asking them to submit reports in the matter. They have been given two weeks to respond, the NHRC spokesperson said in a statement after the commission took suo motu cognizance of media reports about numerous casualties and injuries in the clashes between protesters and security forces. It (NHRC) has observed that it is closely watching the incidents of violence in the aftermath of the killing of militant Burhan Wani in an encounter with the security forces on July 8, the statement said.
4 NHRC issues notice to Centre, J&K government July 19, 2016 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notice to the Centre and the Jammu andkashmir government over the incidents of widespread violence in the aftermath of the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani. Taking cognizance of the issue through media reports, thenhrc said that it was closely monitoring the situation in the Kashmir valley. "Expressing its utmost concern over the developments, the Commission has issued notices to the Union Home Secretary and the Chief Secretary, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, calling for reports in the matter. It has given two weeks to respond," said a statement from the commission. The Kashmir valley has seen over this month a series of violent clashes between angry protesters and the security forces, resulting in scores losing their lives and hundreds sustaining injuries.
5 Etah hooch tragedy: Toll reaches 40; NHRC seeks report July 20, 2016 In the notices issued to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, the NHRC observed that some government employees, including from the state excise department and police officials, have been suspended pointing towards negligence on the part of the official machinery resulting in the tragedy. WITH SEVEN more deaths reported overnight, the toll in the spurious liquor tragedy in Etah and Farrukhabad districts of Uttar Pradesh climbed to 40 Tuesday even as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued notices to the state government asking it to file a report in four weeks. In the notices issued to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, the NHRC observed that some government employees, including from the state excise department and police officials, have been suspended pointing towards negligence on the part of the official machinery resulting in the tragedy. It asked the Chief Secretary and the DGP to file reports in the matter within four weeks. Meanwhile, senior official informed that death toll in two districts has risen to 40. District Magistrate of Etah, Ajay Yadav told The Indian Express that three more deaths were reported till Tuesday evening. The toll in Etah is now 32. Around a dozen persons are undergoing treatment at Safai medical college. Including 10 today, we have have arrested 37 persons involved in sale of illicit liquor, Yadav said.
6 UP hooch tragedy: NHRC issues notices to UP chief secretary, DGP Jul 19, 2016 New Delhi, July 19 (ANI): The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that more than 26 people have died and several others are critical after consuming spurious liquor in Etah and Farukhabad districts of Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly five government employees including three from the state excise department have been suspended following the incident. Expressing it concern over the loss of life due to consumption of spurious liquor, the commission has observed that the reported suspensions of some public servants in the matter, point towards negligence on the part of the official machinery, which resulted in the tragedy. Accordingly, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police Government of Uttar Pradesh calling reports in the matter. They have been given four weeks to respond. The teams have recovered huge quantity of illicit liquor and its raw material from various places including Bareilly, Kushinagar, Bijnore, Allahabad, Sonbhadra, Etah, Mau and Kanpur Dehat. Police also arrested several persons in the matter. Earlier, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi expressed profound grief over the loss of lives. Gandhi, who took to micro-blogging site to express his condolences to the victims' families, said all those responsible must be brought to book "My deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy," he tweeted. "V.sad to learn that many ppl have lost their lives in Etah,UP because of consuming spurious liquor.those responsible must be brought to book (sic)," he said in another tweet. (ANI)
7 Hooch Tragedy: Toll mounts to 37, NHRC seeks report July 19, 2016 The toll in the spurious liquor tragedy in Uttar Pradeshtoday climbed to 37 with four more deaths reported even as the NHRC took suo moto cognisance of the matter and issued notices to the state government seeking a reply in four weeks. Two deaths each were reported in Etah and Farrukhabad, IG, (law and order) Hariom Sharma said here, adding the toll in Etah now has reached 31, while in neighbouring Farrukhabad it is six. Taking suo motu cognisance of the deaths, the NHRC observed the suspension of public servants pointed towards negligence on the part of the official machinery resulting in the tragedy. It issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police seeking reports in the matter within four weeks. The main accused Sripal Lodh has already been arrested and 11 officials from excise department and police have been suspended. The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the families of each deceased. Over two dozen people were admitted in various hospitals in Etah and Saifai and their condition was stated to be serious. Meanwhile to check manufacture and sale of illicit liquor, DGP Javeed Ahmed has issued strict directives to the officials in the districts to conduct a drive against the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor. The authorities have launched a crackdown on bootlegging and arrested 1,621 people across Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, BSP Supremo Mayawati accused the state government of going soft on the officials responsible for the death. Meanwhile, BJP MPs Ram Shankar Katheria and Rajvir Singh said they will raise the issue tomorrow in Parliament and stage a dharna there. "The matter will be raised in Parliament tomorrow. We will also stage a dharna at the Gandhi statue in Parliament," Katheria said. "People have lost their lives consuming liquor being made illicitly under the patronage of ruling party and the government claims to fulfill its responsibility merely by arresting a salesman and suspending some officials, he said, alleging the real culprits are roaming freely. A Congress delegation also visited the district and met the victims and their families. State in-charge of disciplinary committee of the Congress RK Dubey said his party will protest demanding justice and an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the victims.
