7 Workshop on Wildlife Crime SHORT BIOGRAPHIES OF EXPERTS Mr Tony Long Director, WWF European Policy Office.Tony Long has more than 30 years of experience working in environmental non-governmental organisations in the UK and Europe. In 1989 he founded and currently heads the WWF European Policy Office in Brussels. He is a member of the WWF International Assembly, the principal decision-making forum in the organisation. He is a Board member of the Global Footprint Network, the Club of Rome (EU Chapter) and WWF Greece. He has served for ten years on the Sustainability External Advisory Committee of the Dow Chemical Company. He was a visiting professor at the College of Europe, Bruges, for six years teaching a course on environmental politics. He worked for two years in the US Congress and the State Legislature of New Mexico as a Harkness Fellow of the Commonwealth Fund of New York and a Congressional Fellow of the American Political Science Association. He is a graduate of Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, in Town and Country Planning. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts (FRSA). Ms Ioana Botezatu Ioana manages Project PREDATOR within INTERPOL Environmental Crime Programme. She is responsible for managing a team of 4 which aims to support and enhance the governance and law enforcement capacity for the conservation of wildlife in Asia, especially tigers and other Asian big cats such snow leopards. Ioana also ensures the sustainability of the project and its activities in Asia, builds integral relationships and also promotes the formation of National Environmental Security Task Forces (NEST) in the region. Amongst other activities, Ioana has coordinated international operations between Asian countries. She has previously been the International Partnerships Officer of the Programme, a position which has allowed her to develop alongside management, a sustainable Environmental Crime Programme from several colleagues to a team of twenty. Ioana has represented INTERPOL at a number of international meetings and conferences focused on inter-agency and international cooperation in environmental compliance and enforcement. Ioana holds two Master s degrees on Sustainable Development and International Relations and in Business Communication in a Multicultural Environment. She is part of a team of international advisors and trendsetters for environmental security. Ms Helge Elisabeth Zeitler Helge Elisabeth Zeitler, Legal Advisor in the Unit "Multilateral Environmental Agreements, processes and trade" at DG Environment of the European Commission, previously responsible for environmental crime issues in DG Justice. German lawyer by training with a doctoral degree on international environmental law and prior experience also at the German Foreign Ministry and the UN on international criminal justice. 5
8 Policy Department A: Economic and Scientific Policy Ms Christine Macsween Chris obtained her BA in Manchester in In 1998 she was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Management Accountants (CIMA). She served on the CIMA Council between 2002 and She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She was the Président-directeur générale (PDG) of a company in France for seven years before returning to the UK. Back in the UK, she subsequently became the Managing Director of three consumer electronic companies between the years of 1998 and 2009, in each case taking responsibility for the control, planning and development of the business and establishing strong brand awareness and new products in the fast developing consumer marketplace. Mr Pieter Kat Pieter took his BSc at the University of Rochester, his MSc in marine biology at the University of Delaware and his MA and PhD in ecology and evolution at Johns Hopkins University in the USA. Pieter's Experience He spent ten years working in Kenya on biological research programmes, including studies of genetic diversity in bovids (eg antelopes) of east Africa, the predators of the Masai Mara, and diseases likely to affect predators. He spent two years at the University of California, Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, USA working on rabies virus genetics, African horse sickness and bluetongue virus amongst carnivores. He was invited by the Government of Botswana to study lion populations and to make recommendations for their conservation. He has authored more than 70 scientific papers to date. Mr Satyen Sinha Satyen has worked for IFAW since He began his IFAW career by heading up IFAW UK s government relations. During this time he also doubled up as the wildlife trade and marine campaigner, working on such issues as the illegal ivory trade and whaling, before moving to Brussels to concentrate on IFAW s political work in the EU and Europe. Satyen is currently responsible for IFAW s security and anti-poaching campaign, as well as responsible for heading up political strategy on IFAW s wildlife trade programmes in Europe. His work has seen him lead a number of IFAW delegations, ranging from the UNEP African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) to the World Heritage Convention, in order to secure agreement from world leaders for the greater protection of species and habitats. Prior to joining IFAW, Satyen worked for the UK Conservative Party on issues including conservation and the environment as part of the Conservative Party s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs team. With a postgraduate degree in European Politics, he brings with him vast experience of working at the heart of the policy making process and in depth knowledge of pan-european and international political processes. 6
9 Workshop on Wildlife Crime Ms Barbara Helfferich Barbara Helfferich has more than 18 years of experience in European policy making. She worked in the non-governmental sector as well as in the European Commission. As Sectary general of the European Women s Lobby she successfully established one of the biggest and most influential European NGOs in Brussels. In 1992, the European Commission recruited her to become member of cabinet of the European Social Affairs Commissioner, a post which she held for five years until she was appointed European spokesperson for the environment. In October 2011, she became European Policy Director for WCS in Brussels. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University as well as a Master s degree in journalism and international communications. 7
