2 NOTES Presenters Lori Adams has worked for most of her adult life with church-related and other not-for-profit financial and service organizations in the areas of leader and organizational development. Beginning in 1997, she co-staffed her denominational antiracism initiative, partnering with Crossroads staff to organize and train people to dismantle systemic injustice in the church and communities they serve. In three national organizations, she also co-led organizational antiracism transformation teams. Lori graduated from Vanderbilt University with degrees in sociology, theology, and religion and personality. In early 2015, Lori was invited to join with Crossroads staff to engage in national training, facilitation, and organizing. She lives in Boone County, IN with her spouse, youngest daughter, and a few critters. She is especially happy when her granddaughters come to visit. 2
3 Jessica Vazquez Torres is a proven leader with 15 years experience in antiracism, anti-oppression, and cultural competency workshop development and facilitation. She is active in peace and justice concerns, including worker justice, immigration reform and antiracism. Jessica is deeply committed to addressing social structures and cultural dynamics that marginalize and minoritize communities and limit their access to resources. Jessica, a 1.5-Generation ESL Queer Latina of Puerto Rican descent, holds a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida, a Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary, and a Master of Theological Studies from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Jessica is a National Organizer with Crossroads Antiracism Organizing and Training. About Crossroads About Crossroads: Since 1986 Crossroads Antiracism Organizing & Training (formerly Crossroads Ministry) has been providing organizing, training, and consulting to institutions striving to dismantle racism. This includes analyzing internal policies and procedures that maintain white power and privilege, and helping to create an intervention strategy to dismantle oppressive systems. A key strategy for institutional organizing is creating internal antiracism teams. Through this work we also strive to create and strengthen structures of accountability to People and Communities of Color and other socially oppressed groups, both within the institution and in the wider community. Intersectionality of Oppressions Racism is a form of oppression that intersects with other forms of oppression (e.g. sexism, heterosexism, classism and ableism) in complex ways, therefore resistance to racism requires resistance to all other forms of oppression. Antiracism is an inclusive and anti-oppressive framework that addresses the intersections of oppression in order to address the full complexity of dismantling racism. When organizing around other systems of oppression takes into account how racism operates within those systems, fighting for all forms of social justice is more effective. 19 We return to this picture From Annie E Casey Foundation pdf Building a proactive framework for addressing issues of race begins with having a clear understanding and vision of racial equity and inclusion. It is not enough to be able to critique and react to race inequities. We also need to know how to create and proactively build racial equity. Establishing a shared language to present data, describe conditions and outcomes and identify root causes of inequities serves an important function. A common language creates a narrative that makes it easier to communicate the commitment to racial equity, both internally and externally, and it creates a platform for coordinated work toward equitable outcomes.
