This interdisciplinary group includes members from Creighton University Department of Political Science and Creighton Law School. Report completed October Creighton University Graduate College research grant, Summer This grant funded data collection and manuscript preparation for a project on American Indian voter turnout and vote choice. Organized Research Grant Northern Arizona University Received research funding to explore the role of district level influences on party turnover in congressional elections. This allows me to test hypothesis that include redistricting effects, minority composition at the district level, and macroeconomics. By employing an event history methodology I am also able to identify the role of political party continuity and its effects on government. Findings to be reported in conference papers 4
5 and articles submitted for publication in political science journals. Organized Research Grant Northern Arizona University This project examines how American Indian Tribal Governments have taken a more active role in the political process in the 1990 s by mobilizing voters, endorsing candidates, and working for candidates with issue positions favorable to their tribe. Mail surveys sent to tribal leaders of all federally recognized tribes in the U.S to gauge their level of political participation. Essentially, American Indians are mobilizing in response to recent changes in their government-to-government interactions with the Federal government. This era of Forced Federalism is marked by the federal government's efforts to compel tribal governments to negotiate with state governments in areas like gaming. Findings reported at the 2000 APSA Meeting and in the book Forced Federalism: American Indian Sovereignty Under Siege. Social and Behavioral Science Research Grant and Co-researcher (with Jeff Corntassel) on project to study American Indian Tribal support of Federal, state and local officeseekers. Received 2 grants (1994 and 1996) from Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute, University of Arizona to survey American Indian tribes throughout the country. Created a data set examining the political behavior of tribal leaders/tribal governments during the 1994 and 1996 election cycles. Findings reported in The Social Science Journal, Red Ink, an American Indian Journal, Forced Federalism: American Indian Sovereignty Under Siege and in conference presentations. OTHER RESEARCH ACTIVITES Peer reviewer: American Political Science Review, American Indian Quarterly, Journal of Politics, Political Research Quarterly, State Politics and Policy Quarterly. Faculty advisor for Lauren Pascal who received a College of Arts and Sciences Student Summer Research Scholarship, 2005, to study truth in sentencing policy diffusion. Organized Conference Panel at the Midwest Political Science Association Meeting April 2006 American Indian Political Participation with Frederick Boehmke. Research Tools: Survey Research Methods; Advanced Statistical Methods including linear and non linear regression, event history models, time-series techniques. Statistical Packages- STATA, SPSS. Experience: Designed and carried out surveys of Indian Tribal Governments following 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000 elections. Use linear and non-linear regression, time series, event history and event count models in my research.
