WORK IN PROGRESS Book The primary project is a book length manuscript developing a big picture view of the relationship between democracy and well-being. To date this has not been done; in lieu are scattered articles on specific aspects of democracy its level, procedural effects, democratic citizens choices, etc. This book will focus on pulling aspects together in a coherent theory regarding what increases (or decreases) human wellbeing, and address, among other things, democratic vs. authoritarian differences, and the meaning of contending views of what democracy SHOULD be. Papers (1). Pacek, Alexander, Benjamin Radcliff (University of Notre Dame), and Andre Pierre Audette (University of Notre Dame). Public Policy and Human Happiness: The Impact of Gender Equality Around the World. Using a variety of cross-national data sources, we find that gender equality policies significantly increase the extent to which individuals find their lives to be satisfying.
6 (2). Pacek, Alexander, and Pascal Doray-Demers (University of Montreal), The European Union, Democratic Deficit, and Human Happiness. This paper examines the impact of European Union policies and institutions on subjective well-being of EU citizens, separate from effects of national governments. (3). Pacek, Alexander, and Benjamin Radcliff (University of Notre Dame). The Welfare State and Human Well-Being Revisited: Applying New Conceptualizations of the Welfare State. This paper applies a new conceptualization of welfare states as poles to gauge their impact on human well-being, using cross-national data. (4). Pacek, Alexander, and Alexander Jakubow (Rutgers University). Quality or Size of Government? This paper merges the literatures on Quality of Government and Size of Government to examine the interactive effect of the two on subjective well-being. (5). Flavin, Patrick (Baylor University), Alexander Pacek, and Benjamin Radcliff (University of Notre Dame). The Political Determinants of Home Life Satisfaction. This paper looks at the impact of aspects of government size and welfare policy specifically, as well as involvement in political organizations on the quality of individual s lives outside the workplace. (6). Flavin, Patrick (Baylor University), Alexander Pacek, and Benjamin Radcliff (University of Notre Dame). The Political Determinants of Time Use This paper looks at the impact of public policies on the amount and types of nonwork time individuals spend, building on empirical findings about the importance of such time for physical and psychological well-being. (7). Pacek, Alexander, Patrick Flavin (Baylor University), and Benjamin Radcliff (University of Notre Dame). Labor Market Regulations and Life Satisfaction: A Global Analysis. This paper extends earlier research on the impact of LMRs on life satisfaction from solely advanced industrial democracies to the entire world, in order to assess the mitigating factors by which government policies either increase or decrease subjective well-being in a variety of political settings. (8). Pacek, Alexander, and Michael Koch. The Security State and Life Satisfaction. Using time-serial data, we examine the impact of state security policies on subjective well-being in advanced industrial democracies.
