In special cases, however, several layers may be applied. In this bonding, the abrasive grits project to a relatively high degree from the bonding. hese tools are highly effective and allow high cutting rates. his bonding allows economical and rapid manufacture of special tools. Recoating of the worn tool is possible. Ñ Metal bonding he abrasive coating in this type of bonding consists of a mixture of metal powder and diamond or boron nitride grit. Grinding tools with metal bonding are manufactured by sintering. he high degree of hardness of the metal bonding renders the grinding wheel very resistant to wear, but is not as effective as the other bonding systems. You have an aim, but not yet a solution. ñ We can develop the complete tool on your behalf  from the design/drafting stage, including manufacture of the blank, to coating. You already know your requirements, but are still not aware of the best possible, most economical solution. ñ You provide us with your drawing (or even just a sketch) and we will deal with the rest, right down to the readytouse tool. You already have a blank of the tool, or even a worn tool. recoend 126 as a medium grit for general grinding of metals and hard materials. s >56 should preferably not be used. Coarser diamond grits in the range of 181 to 602 can be used in plastic and rubber finishing. Fine and extremely fine grits can be used for special applications. Ñ Recoating of worn tools ools with galvanic bonding, like any other tools, are subject to natural wear and tear. Since the iobilisation time of a tool considerably affects the productivity of the working process and the price of the product to be manufactured, extending tool service life is a decisive factor. his is why our tools can be recoated several times. his is of value primarily when on the one hand, the proportion of expenditure for design and/or manufacture of the carrier has incurred a considerable percentage of the costs or when appropriately high numbers of the same tools exist. he prerequisite in this case is merely that the carrier remains free of defects in terms of true running and geometrical shape. ressing of a damaged carrier after the coating is lost is worthwhile only in exceptional cases, since in most cases, the requisite expenditure for repairs approximates that of a newly manufactured product. Coating thickness For a tolerated dimension in the coated area, account must be taken of the coating thickness when manufacturing the blank. Ñ Notes on manufacture of the carriers (blanks) Material: Blanks should preferably be made of low alloyed or unalloyed chromiumfree steels, e.g. C 60, C 45, S 7, which guarantees optimum bonding between the galvanic layer and blank. Prerequisite: fine turning, milling or grinding are adequate machining operations for surfaces to be coated. It is important that all rotating tools are manufactured with optimum radial runout, since generally, the tools can no longer be dressed after coating. 6 . iamond and boron nitride tools iamond and boron nitride special tools Ñ Embedding depth of grits he embedding depth is one of the essential elements to be observed during tool manufacture and has a direct effect on the properties and service life of the tool. epending on the application, the embedding depth must be designed differently in order to achieve both optimum finish (required surface quality) and guarantee optimum economy during tool use (long service life). Ñ ool design An optimum coating is a basic prerequisite for tool quality. In order to guarantee this, a number of different factors should be taken into account as early as the tool design stage: 1. Sharp edges and points in the coating area are unfavourable and should preferably be avoided. he corner radius of sharpedged tools will be at least 1.5 x grit. his yields for example: Required grit 126 micron 126 x 1.5 = indicates the required minimum radius in this case. Mminimum radius R 0.19 max. galvanic irradiation depth 90 not advisable 2. Narrow penetrations, such as grooves, slots and deep profiles are very difficult or almost impossible to coat, since the irradiation of the galvanic process corresponds to an approximate 90 angle. Reliable results are obtained by divided tools. Ñ Favourable chip flow Particularly tools for plastic and rubber machining should have a good chip flow because of the large volume of chippings that accumulate in order to prevent overheating and clogging of the tools. Segmented coatings, bores, slots or grooves assist the chip flow and simultaneously achieve a cooling effect. In the case of larger, cylindrical tools, a spirally applied sectional coating yields a uniform cut without chatter. An additional, beneficial effect the costs for coating and recoating are reduced.
