1 CURRICULUM VITAE STEVEN FRIEDMAN, D.Litt Research Associate, Institute for Democracy in South Africa (Idasa) Visiting Professor of Politics and International Relations Rhodes University ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS BA (Hons), Political Science, University of the Witwatersrand, D.Litt, Rhodes University, 2007 EMPLOYMENT HISTORY : Labour Reporter and later Senior Editor, Financial Mail. Responsible for reporting on labour relations, socio-economic issues and black politics : Labour Reporter and then Labour Correspondent, Rand Daily Mail. Contributor to, inter alia, The Guardian, Financial Times, New York Times. Author of study on the history of the contemporary black trade union movement (see below). 1985: Joined SA Institute of Race Relations to conduct a detailed study of the reform process, which relied on extensive interviews with politicians, civil servants and activists. Publications produced as a result of this study are listed below : Policy Research Manager, SA Institute of Race Relations. Supervised a unit engaged in research on contemporary policy issues : Senior Research Officer, Centre for Policy Studies, University of the Witwatersrand Business School. Engaged in analysis of transition to democracy and a study of prospects for a "Social Contract", a negotiated social and economic compromise between major interest groups.
