United States Foreign Policy
Contemporary US F.P. Timeline In the early 20th century, U.S. isolates and remains neutral ahead of 1 st and 2 nd World Wars, US has to intervene to help end them, after 2 nd World War we will actively work to keep it from happening again 1945 Marshall Plan, United Nations 1947 Truman Doctrine 1949 North Atlantic Treaty Organization established Korean War US provides aid to help rebuild Europe after WWII, goal is to prevent another global war (and stop communism); UN is a coalition of international govt s, goal=peace US policy to give money and weapons to free peoples resisting communism Union of western democratic countries with the goal of common mutual defense, goes against Warsaw Pact North Korean Communists (and China) versus South Korean Democrats (and US)
1961- Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis Vietnam War 1979 Iranian Hostage Crisis 1980 John Lennon (Beatles) assassinated 1989 to 1991 Breakup of the USSR 1991 Operation Desert Storm Mid to late 90 s Timeline Continued Cold War tensions between US and USSR reach all time high North Vietnam (Communist) vs. South Vietnam and US (Democratic) Islamic Revolutionaries overthrow their gov t (a US ally) and take 55 hostages for over a year Not F.P. related at all, just sad Communism fails in Soviet Russia, economy can t compete with US US goes to war with Iraq to repeal them from Kuwait, protect US access to oil in the Middle East Bosnia, Liberia, Somalia, Kosovo, Rwanda, etc. genocides/wars
Timeline Continued 9/11/ /07/2001,Operation Enduring Freedom ,War in Iraq Enduring themes throughout War on Terror May 2, 2011 Worst terrorist attack in American history; leads to most significant change in US FP since Pearl Harbor US invades Afghanistan and begins war there that still rages today US invades Iraq, topples Saddam s regime in the search for WMD s, instills democratic government there Hunt and Killing of Al Qaeda leaders; drone strikes in Pakistan and other terrorist hot spots Osama Bin Laden killed, global leader of Al Qaeda terrorist organization
Foreign Aid Economic and Military assistance given by the US to developing countries and strategic allies International Monetary Fund, World Bank $53 bil./yr(that we know about) in US federal budget; approx. $70 bil./yr in private aid Total US Aid a year Afghanistan $11.4b Pakistan, Israel - $2.8b each Iraq - $2b Mexico $718m Russia $ 505m
War on Drugs Aim of the US government to prohibit certain drugs, reduce the illegal drug trade; intended to end production, distribution, consumption Provided aid to countries like Mexico and Columbia to fight cartels and traffickers Invested billions in the US to hunt domestic production and/or distribution, incarcerate those caught
Israel Since 1947 and creation of Israel, US has provided aid to secure Israeli survival Provided military and economic assistance, our closest ally in the Middle East, unquestionable support during times of war Largest cumulative recipient of aid since WWII
NATO Military alliance in place since 1949 Members agree to common mutual defense, deter next World War Today, most US military strategy and action is done in accordance with NATO forces
United Nations Created in 1945, goal is to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, human rights, social progress, and achievement of world peace 193 member nations, every sovereign state in the world Wants to stop wars between countries and allow dialogue between them
UN cont d Contains: General Assembly- legislative body, chooses key UN leadership Secretariat- administrative body that supports other areas, UN Secretary General is the leader of the UN Court of Justice- settles disputes b/t countries (if they follow them) and rule human rights violations UN Security Council- responsible for maintaining peace and security; 5 permanent members (US, France, UK, China, Russia) + 10 elected Economic and Social Council- encourages states to cooperate to raise Standard of Living, human rights, humanitarian aid, culture/education
NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement Largest trade bloc (in GDP) in the world Eliminated barriers to trade and investment (Canada is our largest trade partner; Canada, Mexico are 1st and 2nd largest buyers of American goods)
FP in the Middle East Important allies: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Israel, Pakistan, Turkey Much conflict or violence in M.E. today is religious, either sectarian Islam or b/t Islam,Christianity, Judaism War on Terror has been focused in Afghanistan and Pakistan Invasion of Iraq has lasting impact up until today
FP with China Probably the most important relationship between 2 countries in the next 50 years 1st and 2nd largest economies, major trade partners, common goals of mutual economic/trade success and growth, academic excellence, etc. (They must remain positive politically) Sometimes fight over tariffs, currency exchange, human rights, communism-democracy, US debt, US trade deficit, US fears growing Chinese military power (They are HUGE competitors)
Oil US produces less than half of the oil it needs Canada is our main source of foreign oil, but energy is a volatile market and much of the rest comes from Middle East, some from new African resources too Carter Doctrine - policy that US would defend interest in the Persian Gulf
