To Do, To Die, To Reason Why: The Individual Ethics of Armed Conflict. This fellowship, which runs from , will allow me to consider a broad range of issues in just war theory, especially as they apply to individual combatants. As a consequence, I will be on research leave for this period.

7 AHRC Research Grant ( 529,336 + Research Studentships). Criminalization. A project to develop a normative theory of criminalization, both domestically and internationally, led with Professor Antony Duff (Stirling) and Professor Lindsay Farmer (Glasgow). It was rated as A+ by the AHRC who have provided 529,336 as well as the cost of two PhD studentships. The project will involve the project leaders each writing a monograph as well as a range of journal articles. Conferences and meetings will result in publications by a broad range of participants. We will appoint a research assistant to assist with the project. Oxford University Press have agreed to publish a series of seven volumes arising from the project (three monographs and four edited collections). AHRC Research Grant ( 35,000). The Trial on Trial. An interdisciplinary and cross institutional research project to investigate the normative foundations of the criminal trial, led with Professor Antony Duff (Stirling), Professor Lindsay Farmer (Glasgow) and Professor Sandra Marshall (Stirling). The project has produced two edited collections of essays and a co-authored book following four international seminars held at the three institutions involved. It was rated A+ by the Arts and Humanities Research Board who have provided 35,000 of funding. All three books were published by Hart Publishing. Wellcome Trust ( 3000) Psychiatry and Criminal Responsibility. Dr Ivan Crozier (Science Studies, Edinburgh) and I were awarded 3000 by the Wellcome Trust to fund a workshop on psychiatry and law in The remainder of the funding was provided by the Development Trust Research Fund. British Acadamy ( 5394) Rape Reform. Dr Sharon Cowan (Law, Edinburgh) and I were awarded 5394 by the British Academy to fund a project on rape reform in British Academy ( 1000) British Academy travel grant to attend the Defining Crimes conference at Louisiana State University. Visiting Positions In 2013, I was a Senior Research Fellow at the Nathanson Centre, Osgoode Hall. In 2014 I was visiting faculty at Central European University, Budapest. Law Reform Projects 1. A Critique of the Draft Criminal Code on Sexual Offences. One of four invited speakers at the Scottish Law Commission Symposium on reform of sexual offences. The paper formed the basis of Rape Without Consent above. 2. An analysis of the Scottish law of murder was commissioned by the Law Commission, and published as an appendix to their consultation document on the law of homicide. Papers Delivered
