Aim # 86: To what extent did the Reagan's policies reflect a shift in American politics? 1
Conservatism: Less regulation of the economy Laissez Faire and free enterprise Low taxes will stimulate the economy No governement programs to transfer wealth to the "less wealthy" Social problems are caused lack of morals, religion and character Law and Order and increase in defense spending 2
3
Ronald Reagan (Republican) How did "Reaganomics" impact the role of government and society? Increased tax cuts for business 50% bracket down to 28% bracket called "trickle down theory" 4
Cut spending on domestic programs saying that the states should begin to decide which programs they want to continue or cut! Decreased business regulationsclaiming that business best regulates itself! 5
"Reaganomics" or supply side economics claims that if you cut business taxes it will give business more money to expand. In turn, this will create more opportunities for new business and expansion along with increased employment! 6
When I talk of tax cuts, I am reminded that every major tax cut in this century has strengthened the economy, generated renewed productivity and ended up yielding new revenues for the government by creating new investment, new jobs and more commerce among our people. Ronald Reagan, Acceptance Speech at the 1980 Republican Convention 7
Some results of Supplyside economics Major Recession nded problem of stag flation but resulted in major layoffs and increased unemployment. 8
Reagan broke air traffic controllers strike and it resulted in decreased union activity throughout the country. The end of the anti war movement, the ebbing of the civil rights movement and the anti union activity of the Reagan administration reduced opposition to his programs. 9
After the recession, business began to boom. Since this time, the number of millionaires and billionaires has increased. Most of the new jobs created were lower paying than the industrial jobs of the past. Many people began to call this period the "McDonald's" economy. 10
Supporters of supply side economics say that the growth of the economy then and since has shown that their ideas work. It rewards those that go out and are creative and have ideas that will help drive the economy. 11
Domestic Policies: Economics: Supply side eco. a. cut taxes b. unregulated businesses c. trickle down Social issues: 1. called for constitutional amendments to a. ban abortion (Roe v. Wade 1973) b. allow prayer in the schools (Engel v. Vitale 1962) 2. Supported the values of newly emerging Religious Right (Fundamentalist Christian organizations) and encouraged them to participate in politics. ***Appoints 2 new Supreme Court justices: Chief Justice William Rehnquist Justice Sandra Day O'Connor New Jersey v. T.L.O 1985 Constitutional Issues: civil liberties Decision: juveniles have the right to protection against illegal search and seizures 12
"We will mine more, drill more, cut more timber". 13

Foreign Policy "Peace through Strength" 1. largest peacetime military buildup (nation's budget deficit from $80b. to more than $200b. 2. Star Wars (SDI) did not support nuclear deterrence Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of USSR leading to reforms within the Soviet Union and a slow down of the arms race 4. Iran Contra Scandal
