3 conflict. Three common reasons why people fight with each other are: conflict about beliefs, conflict about land and water, and conflict about power. People can fight about political beliefs or religious beliefs. For example, in the U.S. Civil War in , the American people fought a bloody civil war about state s rights including the right of an individual state to permit slavery. This terrible war destroyed thousands of families. In modern Pakistan, the fighting between Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims has killed more than 10,000 believers in the past fifty years. Fighting about beliefs can lead to civil war, and many young lives can be destroyed. Secondly, people often fight about land and water. For example, since 1948, Israel and Palestine have suffered a long, angry conflict about which nation owns the West Bank region and its water. In the United States during the 1800 s, European settlers pushed westward into Native American lands. The Native Americans and the European Settlers fought many bloody battles over the period of 100 years. These wars created terrible death and injury on both sides. Fighting about land and water can create long, bitter wars between neighbors. Another common cause of fighting is the hunger for power. During World War Two in Europe, the famous German fascist dictator Adolf Hitler wanted to control Europe. By his commands, more than 50 million people were killed. Another example comes from Central Asia. During the 1200 s, the most powerful men in the world were the Mongolian warlord, Genghis Khan, and his son Ogedei Khan. They gained control of all the countries from Poland in the west, to China in the east, including Iran, Iraq, and Russia. To enforce the power of the Mongol Empire, they killed more than 60 million people. Fighting about power can create huge international wars which lead to massive loss of human life. As a result of this oil war, thousands of Kuwaiti soldiers died and more than 25,000 Iraqi lives were destroyed. Fighting about natural resources can lead to war between neighbors.
