4 President's Secretariat His Excellency Mr Ashraf Ghani, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, called on the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. Welcoming the Afghan President to India, the President expressed admiration for the astute leadership that he has provided to Afghanistan through difficult times. He also commended Mr Ghani for strengthening bilateral relations between India and Afghanistan. The President said that for India, Afghanistan is not just a strategic partner, but a nation that evokes endearing affection.

6 He recalled President Ghani s speech at the Heart of Asia Summit in Amritsar in December 2016, and his visit to the Golden Temple. He added that civilisational links and people-to-people contacts provide a strong foundation to our ever-growing friendship. The President said that in recent times, the two countries have deepened their strategic partnership. The India-Afghanistan Trade and Investment Show in New Delhi brought our businessmen together and generated business worth over US $ 200 million. The President expressed happiness at the opening of the air freight corridor between Kandahar and Kabul and Delhi. He also noted that the Afghan cities of Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat have been connected directly by air to Delhi.

8 The President said that securing sustained peace and security remain the key fundamentals in leading Afghanistan on the pathway of economic recovery and growth. Unfortunately, mindless and senseless violence is being imposed on the people of Afghanistan. President Kovind strongly condemned recent terror attacks in Afghanistan, including in the provinces of Kabul, Kandahar, Ghazni and Paktia,that have resulted in over 200 innocent people being killed. The President said that India itself has been victim of state-sponsored, crossborder terrorism for decades. We can fully empathze with the ongoing quest of the Afghan people to secure peace. India believes that whatever initiatives are taken for bringing peace in Afghanistan should be Afghan-led and Afghan-controlled. External Affairs Ministry said, India assisted projects will further contribute to Afghanistan's reconstruction, economic development and effective governance. In a release, it said the Indian side agreed to extend further need based assistance to Afghan defence and police forces.

9 Ministry of Defence India says terrorism and radicalisation pose a serious security challenge to all countries and a strong collective action is required to fight the menace. Speaking at the 4th ASEAN Defence Ministers' meeting in the Philippines, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, the global strategic and security situation is constantly evolving and has thrown up fresh and serious challenges. She said, India has taken resolute measures to fight the scourge of terrorism from across its borders. Ms Sitharaman said, maritime security continues to be another key concern and India supports freedom of navigation, overflight and commerce throughout the region. She said, nations should resolve maritime disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law.

11 Home Ministry The government is looking into a proposal for 50 temperature-controlled posts along the India-China border for ITBP jawans who guard the Himalayan heights in sub-zero temperatures. Addressing personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, ITBP at Greater Noida, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, the government is considering using technology to maintain a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius in the proposed new posts. These will be located in high-altitude areas where ITBP jawans have to bear the brunt of snow blizzards and sub-zero temperatures. Mr Singh said, a model Border out Post is being set up in Ladakh with the purpose to maintain a uniform 20 degree Celsius temperature.

13 Ministry of Agriculture Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat inaugurated two days olive workshop on Olive Research and Development in India organized by Oilseeds Division, Department of Agriculture and Corporation & Farmers Welfare and ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture Srinagar from October 24-25, 2017, in Srinagar today. Shri Shekhawat pointed out the role of research and development for combating the challenges faced the farmers in past like Bengal famine etc. Shri Shekhawat praised the performance of agriculture, fisheries, horticulture and other sectors for record production during current year but still there is a scope for further improvement to meet the ultimate demand of the nation. He pointed out that India is importing about 68% of cooking oil and thus there is the challenge for farmers and scientists to decrease the import of cooking oil and make the availability of the cooking oil sufficient to feed the nation.

14 In his address Shri Shekhawat said that olive oil consumption has increased five times from last ten years and there is large probability for enhancing its acceptability due to high value index. Thus it becomes challenge for scientists to produce the quality planting material and work on different research aspects of olive for making it a success story for lost of the states in the nation. India has a vast potential for olive cultivation which need to be tapered by the joint efforts of scientists and farmers. At the end he praised the efforts made by the scientists of ICAR-CITH, Srinagar for the olive cultivation under Kashmir conditions a success story.
