1 Portola Middle School and Highly Gifted Magnet Discipline Talks Fall 2015 We ll teach you what to do and what not to do to be safe and enjoy Portola Middle School & Highly Gifted Magnet. 1

3 The School Safety Officer Ø Handles student discipline of a more serious nature including: l Fights, thefts, threats l Weapons, drugs, tobacco l Other criminal matters Handling Discipline Issues Ø Tell us what happened: write a statement. l Who, what, when, where, why, how l Use persons name(s) l Be reflective Ø We investigate, decide, then issue appropriate consequences. 3

4 Standards for Student Behavior Ø Follow the Golden Rule l Treat other people how you would like to be treated (even when they don t deserve it) If you always do what you ve always done, you ll always get what you ve always gotten Discipline Policy Ø Grounds for disciplinary action include: l Disrespect l Defiance l Disruption Ø Grounds for suspension/expulsion include: l Violence Fighting on or off campus l Harassment l Drugs l Weapons 4

5 BASIC RULES: Ø Keep major walkways clear. Ø Sit at tables or benches, or find somewhere else to go. Ø Pick up and throw away your trash. Ø No running, throwing anything, no horseplay play on the PE field. Ø Do not sit on table tops, sit on benches. BASIC RULES: Ø Cannot sell anything on campus for personal gain: candy, trading cards, toys, drinks, etc. Ø All sales done by student body are for fund-raising only: candy bar sales, magazines, etc. Ø Items/money confiscated and returned only to parent. 5

6 HANDS OFF POLICY: Ø We keep our hands to ourselves. l No pushing, shoving, playful hitting, tripping, headlocks l No hitting games or wrestling l No PDA s: public displays of affection l Nothing that looks like violence or might be considered violence. l Not even with your best friend CELL PHONES Ø Cell phones are used off campus only. Ø Turned off as soon as you enter or by 7:50 a.m. at the latest. Ø Not turned on again until the dismissal bell rings. Ø No texting, calls, or pictures are permitted on campus. Ø Confiscated phones must be picked up by a parent. 6

7 Title IX: Anti-discrimination Ø Language, actions, gestures Ø Discrimination towards race, religion, heritage, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual preference. Ø Fair and equal treatment for all. Ø Equal access to educational curriculum. Title IX: Anti-discrimination Ø Hate crimes: violence, vandalism Ø Hate slurs: fag, queer, racist language, jokes, gestures 7

8 Harassment Ø Words, gestures, physical conduct Ø Unwelcome Ø So pervasive (frequent, non-stop) or severe (nasty, bad) Ø Creates a hostile environment Harassment Ø Is in the mind of the victim. Ø Examples: bullying, cyber-bullying, ridicule, ostracizing, threats, etc. Ø Sexual battery: touching anyone s private areas. If reported, police must be called. Must recommend expulsion from the district. 8

9 Bullying Ø Bullying is any deliberate and unwanted severe or pervasive physical, verbal or electronic act. Ø Report Bullying to an Adult l Bullies will not stop until they are reported and an adult intervenes. l We can make them stop! Attendance & Tardies Ø Students arriving after 8:00 AM MUST stop at the Attendance Office and obtain an Admit Slip before going to class. Ø A student is considered tardy if he/she is not in his/her seat when the bell rings. Ø One hour of after school detention will be assigned after the 3 rd tardy. 9

10 School Boundaries Access Roads are off limits. DRESS CODE Dos & Don ts 10

11 Headgear Ø No hats of any kind may be worn. Ø Beanies (with no logo) may be worn during non-instructional time when the temperature is below 55 degrees. Ø No bandanas, scarves or rags may be worn at any time. Leggings may ONLY be worn under dresses, skirts or shorts. 11

12 No low rise pants with skin that s bare. Shorts, dresses or skirts must be fingertip length. 12

13 Pajamas are not for school. No tank tops or spaghetti straps 13

15 Gang attire must not be worn. NO LONG BELTS! 15

16 LIGHTERS MATCHES Do not bring large amounts of Money to School 16

17 NO PERMANENT MARKERS DO NOT BRING CAMERAS TO SCHOOL. 17

18 8/30/15 And no skateboards on Campus INCLUDING TECKDECKS! Skateboards & Bikes Ø Must wear a helmet (it s the Law) Ø Must lock in bike area Ø Please walk your bike or skateboard on sidewalks in front of school before and after school. 18

19 Only Cross at Crosswalks GRAFFITI-TAGGING: Ø It s vandalism, it s a crime. Ø You can be suspended, arrested, transferred! Ø Does not have to be gang related to be serious. Ø Permanent markers are never permitted! 19

20 Thefts are a serious problem: Backpacks, cell phones, tablets, supplies, money. Stealing IS a suspendable offense. Don t walk away from your backpack. Don t expect friends to watch it they don t. Don t share lockers. Ø Paper pickup Ø Detention CONSEQUENCES Ø Suspension: Stay out of class or stay home for a day or two Ø Opportunity Transfer: Transferred to another school for one year. Ø Expulsion: kicked out of LAUSD. 20
