1 GALLUP DAILY TRACKING TOPICS AND METHODOLOGY The subsequent pages list the topics covered in Gallup Daily tracking an unprecedented survey of 1,000 U.S. adults each day, 350 days per year. Gallup Daily tracking includes two parallel surveys: the U.S. Daily and the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index. Each survey collects daily responses from 500 U.S. adults. Gallup s U.S. Daily takes the pulse of the nation, gauging Americans opinions on and perceptions of the most pressing political and economic issues, as well as current events that affect their lives, the U.S., and the world. The U.S. Daily data provide a reliable source of intelligence in a changing world and assist leaders in answering the questions that they care about most. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index provides an in-depth, real-time view of Americans well-being, offering unmatched insight into the quality of life of a population at the community, state, and national levels. The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index measures Americans perceptions of their lives and daily experiences, capturing the interrelated elements that make up well-being: a sense of purpose, social relationships, financial security, relationship to the community, and physical health. Individuals can analyze results for each survey question separately or cross tabulate them with other items. Gallup reports the Gallup Daily tracking findings on Gallup.com. In many cases, Gallup reports findings in Gallup Daily three-day rolling averages; weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly aggregates; and by region and state, as appropriate. Gallup also routinely incorporates additional questions into Gallup Daily tracking on a short-term basis. These extra questions cover topical issues, including Americans election voting intentions and views of events in the news. Copyright Gallup, Inc. All rights reserved. 2 The U.S. Daily asks questions about Americans perceptions of politicians and the political landscape as well as the economy and their personal economic circumstances. 3 INDEX The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index covers topics within the five elements of well-being purpose, social, financial, community, and physical as well as additional questions relevant to exploring a population s well-being. PURPOSE LIKING WHAT YOU DO EACH DAY AND BEING MOTIVATED TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS Inspiring Leader Daily Activities Goals Strengths SOCIAL HAVING SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS AND LOVE IN YOUR LIFE Relationships Personal Time Encouragement and Support FINANCIAL MANAGING YOUR ECONOMIC LIFE TO REDUCE STRESS AND INCREASE SECURITY COMMUNITY LIKING WHERE YOU LIVE, FEELING SAFE, AND HAVING PRIDE IN YOUR COMMUNITY Community Pride Involvement Safety and Security PHYSICAL HAVING GOOD HEALTH AND ENOUGH ENERGY TO GET THINGS DONE DAILY Alcohol, Drug, and Tobacco Use Physical Health Disease Burden/Past Diagnoses Exercise and Activity Eating Habits Standard of Living Ability to Afford Necessities Financial Worry Copyright Gallup, Inc. 4 In addition to asking questions based on the five elements of well-being, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index also includes additional topics relevant to how Americans experience their lives. 5 GALLUP Gallup asks demographic questions on the U.S. Daily and Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index surveys. Age Gender Highest Completed Level of Education Marital Status Category of Work Physician or Nurse Teacher of Students in Kindergarten Through 12 th Grade Monthly Household Income Currently Work for Federal, State, or Local Government Member of Labor Union Religion Important Attend Church, Synagogue, or Mosque Party ID Party Lean Political Ideology Children in Household Adults in Household Approximate Weight Height Race Zip Code Religious Preference Gallup Daily Tracking Methodology Gallup Daily tracking, which includes the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, methodology uses a dual-frame telephone sampling approach. Each sample of national adults includes a minimum quota of 60% cellphone respondents and 40% landline respondents, with additional minimum quotas by time zone in a region. Gallup selects landline and cellphone respondents using random-digit-dial methods. Gallup chooses landline respondents at random within each household on the basis of which member had the most recent birthday. Gallup uses a multi-call design to reach respondents not contacted on the initial attempt. Gallup Daily tracking includes Spanish-language interviews for Spanish-speaking respondents and interviews in Alaska and Hawaii. Samples are weighted daily to account for unequal selection probability, nonresponse, and double coverage of landline and cellphone users in the two sampling frames. They are also weighted to match the national demographics of gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cellphone only/ landline only/both, and cellphone mostly). Demographic weighting targets are based on the most recent Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets are based on the most recent National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets are based on the most recent U.S. census. All reported margins of sampling error include design effects for weighting. Copyright Gallup, Inc. All rights reserved.
