Executive Summary: Major outcomes, results and impact of the Chair, including on national policies, in relation to its objectives as stated in Article 2 of the Chair Agreement (between the Institution and UNESCO) (Not exceeding 300 words) The main outcomes of the UNESCO Chair in Gender Research are reported in relation to its three main objectives, which aim to support the development of policy-oriented research on gender equality around the world: (i) Support and conduct policy-relevant research on gender equality: The UNESCO Chair has contributed to the development of expert knowledge on gender equality policies, relevant to both researchers and policy makers. There have been published outputs from research on gender equality this year: including 4 refereed journal articles, 2 published reports and four other short works. The topics have included the conceptualisation and measurement of justice, capabilities and inequality; gender equity in economic decision-making; and budgets for services to prevent genderbased violence against women. (ii) Build capacity in policy-relevant gender equality research; curriculum development; student training at graduate level: Capacity for policy-oriented gender equality research has been built through the training of two research associates. Curriculum development included the establishment of a new taught undergraduate module on violence and society. Five graduate research students are supervised on gender and on violence. (iii) Support and develop international networking to facilitate the exchange of ideas, research and policy developments, especially between the North and South, and between researchers and policy
2 2 makers, in the context of UN instruments for promoting women s rights and the Millennium Development Goals; including collaboration with UNESCO. Collaboration with other UNESCO Chairs on gender, contributing to the development of this network. Assisted the development of international networking and conferences as Board Member of the International Sociological Association s (ISA) Research Committee 02 on Economy and Society. Supported international networking with various international bodies including UN Women, Women Against Violence Europe, European Sociological Association, European Consortium of Political Science, EU Social Platform. 2) Activities: Overview of activities undertaken by the Chair during the reporting period a) Education/Training/Research (key education programmes and training delivered and research undertaken by the Chair during the reporting period, target group and geographical coverage) i) Education (leading to certificate) MA module: Gender and Violence (8 students from UK, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, and US; majority female). Supervision to successful completion of PhD on Collective violence, democracy and protest policing. Supervision of four further research students, registered for PhD: Measuring domestic violence for policy purposes Addressing domestic violence in a health care setting Gender segregation in the construction industry Patriarchy, capitalism and changes in women s oppression in Turkey. New undergraduate BA module on violence and society started October (15 students from UK, Ecuador, Poland; majority female) ii) Training (short term) Offered expert advice to policy bodies on gender equality and on violence against women, including, (in addition to work with UNESCO): European Institute for Gender Equality: Working Party on Indicators for the Beijing Platform for Action. Canadian Ministry for Justice: Advice on methodology for costing domestic violence. European Union Fundamental Rights Agency: Advised on developing a survey on violence against women. Equality and Diversity Forum Steering Group of Research and Policy Network on Equality and Human Rights. End Violence Against Women coalition: Expert Advisory Group.

6 6 3. Future Plans and Development Prospects: Outline of action plan for the next biennium and short/medium and long-term development prospects. Please do not hesitate to refer to difficulties that the Chair has experienced (Not exceeding 300 words) In the short and medium term the Chair will: Continue to develop policy-oriented research on gender and violence; seek funds and engage with researchers and policy makers on this issue. With UNESCO, help to establish a global research capacity relevant to gender equality. Continue to develop research networks on gender equality and women s human rights. A proposed project to develop, jointly with UNESCO HQ, to develop research capacity via a global network of researchers on violence against women was thwarted by lack of funds. In the long-term the Chair will: Develop new policy-oriented research projects on gender equality that involve collaboration between North and South, including on gender and violence; Develop teaching and training on gender equality, including gender and violence; Continue applications for funding for such projects from diverse sources; Develop global networks of and build capacity for policy-oriented research on gender equality.
