10 Title: Two Essays on Money and Monetary Control. Thesis Advisor: Raymond E. Lombra, Professor of Economics at the Pennsylvania State University. Summary: The thesis consists of two essays on the importance of information for monetary policy. The first essay uses aggregation theory and information theory to examine the information contained in monetary aggregates. The main findings of this essay are (1) that contrary to the literature, aggregation may improve our understanding of the relationship between monetary policy actions and the final targets of monetary policy, and (2) that Divisia monetary aggregates are neither theoretically nor empirically superior to simple-sum aggregates. The second essay then deals with the Fed's ability to extract the information necessary to conduct monetary policy. An examination of the Fed's "Greenbook" and the FOMC's monetary targets suggests that the Fed's policy actions are based on implicit velocity forecasts that are outperformed by a random walk. CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS History of Economic Thought; Microfoundations; Macroeconomics & Monetary Theory; Choice Theory; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Social Economics.
