International Seminar on THE REPUBLIC IN SHAKESPEARE at the University of Jammu, India being organised by the Dept. of English, University of Jammu, in collaboration with The Shakespeare Association, India, on October 16-18, 2013 When Shakespeare came on the scene as a scare-crow to the classically-oriented University Wits of London theatres in late 1580 s, the Medieval World had already undergone a sea change. Struck by the signing of the Magna Carta the charter of people s rights in 1215, and crippled by the creation of the British Parliament in 1295, the old England was experiencing an evolution in fact, a revolution from the stage of implanted faith in the divine right of kings to the stage of insurgency and upheaval marked by historical events like the Peasants Revolt of 1381 and Cade s Rebellion of It was an outcome of this very evolution that the germination of the Renaissance spirit, aspiring for individual freedom, human dignity, and social equality, took place only to grow stronger by the year. By the time Shakespeare stormed the London world of theatres, the idea of the Republic had already found a bold expression in books like the one by Thomas More called Utopia. In his history plays, both Roman and English, Shakespeare, through his subtle subversive devices, interrogates the medieval monarchy and all its fostered power-structures that demeaned the common people and undermined the human dignity, and proposes, through equally subtle imaginative devices, the alternative ideas of People s Republic based on the principles of equality and justice. Shakespeare s comedies, tragedies, and romances, too, reinforce the idea of the Republic, though in dramatic frameworks different from the one that informs the histories. At a time when the Postmodern Theory has not spared even Shakespeare from the accusing labels like the imperial or patriarchal bard, it seems pertinent that the people s Shakespeare is brought to the fore to counter the perverse and pernicious interpretations of his plays. The present Seminar, therefore, is an invitation, and a challenge, to the scholars of Shakespeare to explore afresh the Bard s ideas related to the relationship between the rulers and the ruled, the privileged and the petitioning, the elected and the electing. Suggested Sub-themes 1. Shakespeare and Plato: The Greek Plays 2. Shakespeare and Cicero: The Roman Plays 3. Shakespeare s Medieval plots and the Idea of Individual liberty 4. More s Utopia and Shakespeare: The English Histories 5. Cade s Rebellion in Henry VI, Pt. II: Republican or Anarchic? 6. Gonzalo s Dream of Republic in The Tempest 7.
