1 Race and Ethnicity in American Politics Government 381L Unique Number The University of Texas at Austin Spring 2011 Professor Jason P. Casellas, Ph.D. Office Location: Batts M 12:30-3:15 p.m. Phone Number: (512) Room: Batts casellas@mail.utexas.edu Office Hours: W 10:00-11:30, 2:00-3:30 Description Course Expectations and Requirements As with every graduate seminar, this course should help you to prepare for your preliminary exams, to consider research and dissertation topics, and to teach in the subfield of American politics. More specifically, this seminar will be somewhat of a minilaboratory in which we will not only discuss and debate old and new ideas/paradigms, but consider how assigned studies inform your own research agendas. I will determine the course grade based upon: (1) Weekly Questions/Class Participation (2) Two Critical Papers; and (3) a Research Paper with oral defense. Final Grades will be on an A-F scale, with pluses and minuses. Grades will be on a 100 point scale. Each week, students will post at least one question (preferably several) for each set of readings on blackboard the evening before class. This assignment does not apply if you are leading discussion for that day. By Class Participation, I of course expect you to attend class, to have read and thought about all of the week s assigned readings, and to actively participate in class discussions. Participation/weekly questions are worth 25% of your final grade. Each Critical Paper must be about 5 pages long (double-spaced). Write it as though you are a critic presenting a rejoinder to an author or authors for the week. I recommend you explicitly pose a question or set of questions to help frame your essay. Unless stipulated otherwise, these papers are always due by 5 PM the day before the class meets. The papers are to be posted on the discussion board in Blackboard. Be ready to briefly summarize your paper at the beginning of class. The critical papers are worth 30% of your final grade. You will be expected to choose two weeks during the semester which most interest you
2 and write a paper for each week. On those two days, you will be expected to lead classroom discussion and critically engage your arguments with the rest of the class. Lastly, the Research Paper must be submitted to me before the end of the semester. The paper should be pages double-spaced. The papers can be one of three types: a) a critical, exhaustive literature review, b) a research proposal, or c) an original research paper. Students should meet with me early in the semester to discuss their topics and what I want to see in these papers. The research paper, worth 35%, will be due at the end of the semester. A minute presentation based on your research, much in the same format as a conference presentation, will be required on the last day of class. This presentation is worth 10% of the final grade. Generally, each class session will proceed with me making a few introductory remarks to frame the discussion (about ten to fifteen minutes), consideration of weekly questions, then discussion largely led by the student responsible for that day.
