1 Unit Code: Unit Name: Department: Faculty: 474Z008 INTRODUCTION TO WORLD POLITICS (INBOUND STUDENT MOBILITY - SEPT ENTRY) Politics & Philosophy Faculty Of Arts & Humanities Level: 4 Credits: 5 ECTS: 7.5 The unit offers an introduction to the study of world politics, institutions and processes This unit considers the evolution of the state system and issues of global governance. Explain the historical background of contemporary world politics. Use available primary and secondary sources, specifically online and electronic resources. Communicate effectively using a range of media The summative assessment will be an essay of 2500 words. Preparation for this essay will be the central element of formative assessment. For example, students will need to submit a list of their sources, a plan and in the preceding weeks there will be formative exercises during `workshop` sessions. This will give tutors an opportunity to give feedback on how students are engaging with the process of discovering sources and utilising resources. Breakdown of 50 hours of student learning activity

2 Unit Code: 475Z05 Unit Name: WAR, VIOLENCE AND THE DEMOCRATIC STATE (INBOUND STUDENT MOBILITY - SEPT ENTRY) Department: Politics & Philosophy Faculty: Faculty Of Arts & Humanities Level: 5 Credits: 5 ECTS: 7.5 The unit aims to provide an understanding of the ethical dimensions of politics through an examination of persistent moral problems and dilemmas concerning war, violence and political obligation. War, Violence and the Democratic State is split in to three key sections which evaluate the ethics of war and peace; resistance and collaboration and political violence and the state. Indicative content over these sections includes evaluation of issues such as pacifism and the absolute renunciation of war; theories such as 'just war'; the rules of war including questions such as noncombatant immunity; political obligation (conscription and conscientious objection), the ethical and moral problems associated with the aftermath of war (punishment and war crimes tribunals). Evaluate ethical questions relating to war, violence, political obligation and individual responsibility. Compare competing critical perspectives on war and the conduct of war. Communicate effectively using a range of media Demonstrate professionalism and ethical awareness Students shall complete an essay of 3000 words in length. Alongside secondary material students will be required to utilise a range of primary sources. Students will be required to demonstrate learning outcomes and 2., preparation for which will be undertaken in the seminars, in which students will be encouraged to promote their ideas for their coursework and will receive appropriate feedback from the tutor. Analyse Critical and Postmodern Theories of International Relations Explore the major challenges to global security Apply different theoretical perspectives to the analysis of the current events Analyse real world situations critically Plan & Rev Biblio 2000 words. An essay plan on a problem of student's choice: students need to present their argument and research question, theoretical perspective to be used to analyse these question, the main ideas to be covered in the essay and the indicative bibliography list. The unit covers the following thinkers and their leading ideas; Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean- Jacques Rousseau. evaluate the history of political thought in terms of context and argument. demonstrate critical and reasoning skills, such that they can more fully ascertain the flaws and assumptions contained in contemporary political debate express both orally and in written form coherent expositions, arguments and criticisms, This assessment will take the form of an essay of 3000 words on one of the thinkers studied, preparation for which will be undertaken in the seminars, in which students will be encouraged to promote their ideas for their coursework and will receive appropriate feedback from the tutor. 6 Unit Code: 475Z024 Unit Name: POLITICS OF THE ARTS (STUDENT MOBILITY - SEPT ENTRY) Department: Politics & Philosophy Faculty: Faculty Of Arts & Humanities Level: 5 Credits: 5 ECTS: 7.5 This unit will explore links between art and politics in a thematic way focusing on the artist as witness to, activist in or victim of political events. It will make reference to a wide range of international art, design and cinematic movements. The emphasis is on the visual arts and will explore the following themes through the work of many artists: the avant-garde, futurism, dadaism and surrealism, socialist realism,fascist aesthetics, war art,contemporary political issues. The interaction between art and politics will be also be examined through an examination of cinema as a specific artistic medium. The following themes will be explored: the ideological underpinnings of Hollywood; the experience of McCarthyism in Hollywood; representations of gender, ethnicity and sexuality in the Hollywood cinema; radical cinema in Europe; contemporary European cinema; third cinema in the Global South Intepret the many relationships between politics and the arts in the twentieth century. Discuss the avant-garde in the visual arts and its relationship with politics particularly since 900. apply the main approaches to analysing culture and aesthetics. Apply teamwork and leadership skills Communicate effectively using a range of media Demonstrate professionalism and ethical awareness Engage with stakeholder/interdisciplinary perspectives The student will undertake an essay of 3000 words worth 50% that will assess aspects of the relationship between politics and the arts since 900, preparation for which will be undertaken in the seminars, in which students will be encouraged to promote their ideas for their coursework and will receive appropriate feedback from the tutor.
