Explain the historical background of contemporary world politics. Use available primary and secondary sources, specifically online and electronic resources. Communicate effectively using a range of media The summative assessment will be an essay of 2500 words. Preparation for this essay will be the central element of formative assessment. For example, students will need to submit a list of their sources, a plan and in the preceding weeks there will be formative exercises during `workshop` sessions. War, Violence and the Democratic State is split in to three key sections which evaluate the ethics of war and peace; resistance and collaboration and political violence and the state. Indicative content over these sections includes evaluation of issues such as pacifism and the absolute renunciation of war; theories such as 'just war'; the rules of war including questions such as noncombatant immunity; political obligation (conscription and conscientious objection), the ethical and moral problems associated with the aftermath of war (punishment and war crimes tribunals). Evaluate ethical questions relating to war, violence, political obligation and individual responsibility. Compare competing critical perspectives on war and the conduct of war. Communicate effectively using a range of media Demonstrate professionalism and ethical awareness Students shall complete an essay of 3000 words in length. It will make reference to a wide range of international art, design and cinematic movements. The emphasis is on the visual arts and will explore the following themes through the work of many artists: the avant-garde, futurism, dadaism and surrealism, socialist realism,fascist aesthetics, war art,contemporary political issues. The interaction between art and politics will be also be examined through an examination of cinema as a specific artistic medium. The following themes will be explored: the ideological underpinnings of Hollywood; the experience of McCarthyism in Hollywood; representations of gender, ethnicity and sexuality in the Hollywood cinema; radical cinema in Europe; contemporary European cinema; third cinema in the Global South Intepret the many relationships between politics and the arts in the twentieth century.
