Barriers to Participation Sept. 19/20

Find your name on your scantron and complete any last minute studying for the quiz - If you haven t turned in the Demographics of Voting Behavior questions (and chart) please turn it in to me! (We worked on this last week after guidance came) - If you weren t here on Friday, find me and get a scantron

After the quiz... Turn in your quiz (with your name on it!) and scantron to the labeled desk in front Begin working on Current Event #3: will be on Website (and Remind 101) I have a few copies up front, but please don t take them home with you! Title: An Angry Obama puts Himself on the Ballot Turn in completed Current Event #3 to the folder at the front table

PSA Project Some guidelines Some examples Other forms of media to present the advertisement that doesn t just include PowerPoint

Why don t people vote? There are some barriers to participation...

How have states restricted voting in the past? Talk with your group and include a short list of restrictions based on what we have learned in US History Race Sex/Gender Wealth/money you have Owning land

Historical barrier - Louisiana Literacy Test

Current Barrier: Alabama DMV s and Poverty

Voter Turnout Factors that influence voter turnout: Demographics! PLUS Election Interest (candidates, issues, etc) Election type (president, state, local) Efficacy (the belief that your vote actually matters) Attitudes towards government

Why don t people vote? We can categorize them: Cannot Voters Nonvoters Aliens Mentally/physically handicapped Some people in prison People who do NOT vote Political Efficacy The belief that your individual vote counts/matters/makes a difference So if people don t vote do they have high or low political efficacy?

Some more factors affecting turnout... Off Year Elections - Congressional elections that don t take place during a Presidential Election year Ballot Fatigue - as a vote ballot increases in length, voters tend to run out of patience and may not be sure what they are voting on Inconvenient registration Time Zone Fallout - East coast time zone can ruin the vote for the west coast

If time allows: Evolution of Voting Complete the listed questions with the timeline to discover and identify how the ability to vote has changed over time.. You can work with your pod. Please turn in the completed questions at the front of the table (if not completed please do at home and turn in next class!)

PSA - Redeem Thyselves Increasing low voter turnout...

Problem

Problem: why is it important for young people to vote?

Task: You will create a digitally produced Public Service Announcement (PSA) that informs year olds the importance of participating in the political process. This product will be posted on Twitter, Facebook, the morning announcements or in the greater Ashburn community.

Examples of PSAs

Examples of PSA

Today and Next Class: Research Gather the following information as a starting point for your PSA 1. Why don t young people vote? 2. What issues matter to young people? 3. Are there other ways of participating other than voting? 4. What medium would most effectively reach younger voters?

You MUST Use legitimate and cited sources Work in your group BUT EVERYONE MUST COMPLETE THEIR OWN RESEARCH SHEET HINTS: GALLUP has great polling data :)

Other Points No PowerPoint Could be a 30 second video or a digital poster (something that can be easily shared online) Need to incorporate some of your research information! Your name cannot appear on anything shared online

Remember This needs to be school appropriate. More importantly, it should be community appropriate What you share will reflect on yourself, SBHS, and your future descendants Do NOT bring eternal shame upon your house/friends/yourself!!!

Gallery Walk - Friday, Sept 30 You will create a short presentation of your research and ideas to share with your peers for feedback and Review Pretty much needs to be a final draft!
