2 Material under Preparation Recovering Reputation: Plato and Demotic Power (book manuscript invited for submission, Fall 2018) Opinion is at the core of my research agenda and my principal research topic is reputation in ancient Greek thought. My book manuscript shows how reputation might empower publics and demonstrates the value of thinking about reputation through Plato ( BC), an author who is not readily associated with this concept. Recovering Reputation argues for an understanding of reputation as a demotic power, that is, as a power sourced in and executed by the many. Reputation is a power that circulates among the many, linked to and sustained by myths and rumors, and it is a power that the many exercise through the social mechanisms of praise and blame. Constituting Reputation: A Study of Aristophanes Lysistrata and Assembly-women (research article) My work on ancient democratic Athens extends beyond Plato, with a view to expanding our own ways of thinking about reputation. I use the comedian Aristophanes ( BC) to show how reputation is a liminal notion between public and private. The constitution of these domains in Athens creates the impression that reputation is made and destroyed in politics. Yet, it also enables the cultivation of good judgment in women who were excluded from political life. Aristophanes women make a claim on the public realm, implicit to which is the normative question of what ought to be relevant to political judgment. This adds up to a challenge of Hannah Arendt s view that reputation exists only in the public affairs of men. Reputation as a Problem and Reputation s Problems in Isocrates (research article) Reputation and the concern that goes with it, is a structuring tension in the relationship between citizens and officeholders, for us and for the ancient Athenians. I use the orator Isocrates ( BC) to outline the epistemological problem of a democratic regime, that reputations are often untrue (Antidosis, Panathenaicus), and the political problem of a monarchic regime, that the distribution of good and bad reputation does not reflect the distribution of power (Cyprian Orations). In the trade-off between these problems, I argue, the Athenian Isocrates chooses the former. Populism in Byzantium and Postcolonial Cyprus: John Chrysostom and Makarios (book-length project) Populism is bound to emerge as a topic in any contemporary discussion of political opinion. Contemporary populism is insensitive to the left-right spectrum which we use to make sense of the political landscape; therefore, political scientists might find other ways to understand the phenomenon. I seek to contribute to such an endeavor through a comparative study of late antique and modern populism. The subjects of the study are John Chrysostom ( ), a Church father and Bishop of Constantinople, and Archbishop Makarios III of Cyprus ( ), the first president of the postcolonial nation-state of Cyprus. What does John s attack on wealthy elites tell us about populist leadership? How does John s hyperbolic and appropriate rhetoric about God impact the way his listeners view and judge a world in which false praise is the norm? Makarios is a modern populist who self-consciously draws on John. In the context of a secular nation-state, does John s rhetoric about God appeal to the worse angels of the public s nature? Since Makarios did not attack the rich with the frequency and regularity of his predecessor, how did he energize his audience? Like contemporary populists, John and Makarios seek to harness the energies of the people and mold the world in their own image. Did both John and Makarios unwittingly contribute to their own downfall by identifying with the people? As bona fide political actors enmeshed in great power politics, John and Makarios can help us understand the problem of making and maintaining publics. 2
