DESCRIPTION This subject aims to introduce students to: - Theories and concepts in the sociology of social participation, and social movements. - Organizational models, civic and political practice - Theory and practice of social movements - Methodology and creative practices for social intervention 2. PREREQUISITES To have knowledge on sociological theory and social structure. 1
2 3. OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES Capacity to understand the different forms of governance and power in society. To realize the historic development and the scope of the citizens rights regarding the Welfare State building Capacity to identify the different vías/áreas of social participation for the diverse Social groups and social categories, according to the existing opportunities and limitations Capacity to know and employ different methodologies and practices of social intervention, grounded in social participation. Capacity to analyze social movements, their determinants, effects, ways of organization and communication, and their protest mechanisms. 4. TEACHING METHODOLOGY Sessions will be conducted by the teacher, who will introduce and expose the main aspects of every theme. A selection of readings will be made available to students that are expected to read the texts in advanced. It is necessary in order to follow the classes that students bring the texts, with paper and pen (or lap top) with them to the classroom. In addition to the theoretical sessions, some sessions for discussion of study cases and empirical data will be organized. 5. CONTENTS 1. Conceptual Basis 1.1. ASSESSMENT * An examination (0-6 points, a minimum of 3 points are required in order to pass the exam) The exam will consist on answering to a number of short (15 lines) or/and multiplechoice questions. The exam date 15 th December 2016 * Essay: (0-3, a minimum of 1.5 points are required to pass the essay). Essay guidelines will be discussed in a workshop class. * Attendance to lectures is recommended. Student participation will be considered as desirable and can influence in the final mark up to 1 point if the student: - Attends to all the lessons (Students will be asked for signing an attendance sheet) - Usually participates in the debates and responds to questions in the classroom 5
