Oppression and Our Responsibility to Undermine It (Oxford UP, 2017). Connected by Commitment examines our obligations to transform structural oppression and argues that they should be understood as commitments. This understanding of our obligations is an antidote against the double challenge of powerlessness and denial: the problem that, when faced with structural forms of injustice, such as racial and gender oppression, individuals feel powerless to effect social change and, consequently, deny their obligations to do so. Commitments are relationships of obligation developed over time through the accumulated effect of open-ended actions and responses. The book examines three spheres (legal relations, intimate relations of care, and work relations) and argues that in each of them oppressive relations are maintained through processes that make a mutual vulnerability invisible and in so doing are able to place it disproportionately on disadvantaged social groups. Understanding social relations as commitments is crucial to making this vulnerability visible and thus undermining oppression. Reviewed in Contemporary Political Theory (link.springer.com/article/ %2fs ) Subject to a Critical Dialogue with Avery Kolers s A Moral Theory of Solidarity in Perspectives on Politics (forthcoming) Author Meets Critics Events on Connected by Commitment: Centre for Ethics, (February 2018) (c4ejournal.net/category/mara-marin-connected-by-commitment/) APSA, San Francisco (September 2017)
