Collapse of the Federalist Party and the Era of Good Feelings: Jacksonian Democracy: Whig Party: The United States began to develop a modern democracy and a new national culture, while Americans sought to refine the nation s democratic and republican ideals and change their society and institutions to match them. Henry Clay s American System: Abolition Movement: Women s Rights Movement: Innovations in technology, agriculture, and commerce accelerated the American economy, precipitating profound changes to U.S. society, labor dynamics, and to national and regional identities. Steam Engine: Cotton Gin: Industrialization in the North vs. in the South: 2
3 The U.S. interest in increasing foreign trade and expanding its national borders shaped the nation s foreign policy and spurred government and private institutions. Monroe Doctrine: 2 nd National Bank: Battle of New Orleans: Debates about individual rights, states rights, federal power, and slavery continued to shape the development of the political institutions and practices of the US. Missouri Compromise: Nullification Crisis: Force Bill: Relations between various racial and ethnic groups in the US have taken the form of assimilation (conformity, melting pot, cultural pluralism), conflict (subjugation, population transfer, genocide) or coexistence.
