3 Public Law and Policy Te Piringa Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato has an established tradition of outstanding scholarship in Public Law and Policy as demonstrated by the contributions of the Faculty s founding Dean, Professor Margaret Wilson, and Professor Sir Grant Hammond. Today a significant number of Faculty members continue to have research interests in these fields focused on the Faculty s founding principles of professionalism, biculturalism, and the study of law in context. Current work in the Faculty covers a wide range of common law jurisdictions, in addition to New Zealand and Pacific Island states, and extends from constitutional and administrative law and theory to giving effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori & indigenous governance. The Public Law & Policy Research Unit promotes the widest conception of Public Law and Policy, encompassing administrative law, charity and the regulation of civil society, constitutional law, criminal law and justice, and international law. It was established to fill a clear gap in the interrogation of these policy research areas in an integrated and holistic way. Aims & Objectives The main aims and objectives of the Public Law & Policy Research Unit are to promote research in the areas of public law and policy, and to develop a research unit of national and international reputation by providing: A focal point for the exchange of ideas between academics, practitioners and civil society through colloquia, symposiums, seminars and public lectures; Research support for Faculty members and visiting scholars engaged in relevant research projects; Encouragement and development of research output by the Faculty s research students through a programme of work-in-progress seminars and research forums; Interaction with overseas scholars and practitioners through the Faculty s visiting professor and scholar programmes; Engagement and outreach with governments and NGOs in Pacific Island states, and with public authorities in the Waikato region and central North Island; and Dissemination of research findings through publication. These aims and objectives will be reflected in the events held by the Unit. Waikato Public Law & Policy Research Unit 3
4 Research activities Members of the Unit are committed to producing ambitious cutting-edge work in a wide range of subject areas They seek to influence the national and international debates on significant issues and to shape both academic discourse and the development of a coherent body of law and public policy through the scholarly vitality, analytical rigour and creativity of their research. Their legal research is carried out either individually as self-directed work or in collaboration with academics from across the Faculty, the wider University, or other institutions both nationally and worldwide. To foster discussion, the Unit will hold colloquia, symposiums, seminars and public lectures, as well as informal meetings. Since it is primarily a research institution, the Unit does not seek to provide a structured programme of continuing education courses for the legal profession. However, a number of its events will be accredited with Continuing Professional Development points, and it is hoped that its research activities, and the publication of the results of that research, will be of particular interest to the legal profession and those involved in public law and policy. Our research in the field of international law focuses on armed conflict, conflict of laws, foreign investment law, humanitarian law, human rights, international criminal law, international environmental law, international trade, law of the sea, and public international law. The breadth of this research activity is reflected in the subject areas offered for postgraduate study. This includes: Access to information Administrative law Bill of Rights Charity and the regulation of civil society Conflict of laws Constitutional law Criminal law and justice Human rights International law Judicial review Law officers of the Crown Law reform commissions Local authorities law Officers of Parliament Official information Ombudsmen Privacy Public law Superior courts Treaty of Waitangi Tribunals and commissions of inquiry 4 The University of Waikato
