1 CELEBRATIONS ON NATIONAL VOTERS DAY IN ORISSA ~ A REPORT ~ CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER, ORISSA

2 The State Level function was held at IDCOL Auditorium, Bhubaneswar. His Excellency the Hon ble Governor of Orissa graced the function as Chief Guest. The other invitees were Sri A.K.Tripathy, IAS (Retd), State Election Commissioner, Orissa (Guest of Honour), Sri T.K.Mishra, IAS (Retd), State Chief Information Commissioner, Orissa (Chief Speaker) and Hon ble Justice A.S.Naidu (Retd) (Special Invitee). At the function, EPICs were distributed to 102 newly registered electors by the distinguished guests. His Excellency the Governor administered the Voters Pledge to all those were present in Oriya and in English. Special Caps bearing the logo on NVD and badges were distributed to the citizens present in the function. The film Indian Elections- A mammoth exercise (Oriya version) was also screened, alongwith short advertisement spots specially made for NVD. The office building of the Chief Electoral Officer was illuminated on 24 th and 25 th January 2011 to mark the occasion.

3 Banners on National Voters Day were affixed at conspicuous and public places for wide publicity of the functions. Banner Outside a Polling Station Display Board at State Level Function - Bhubaneswar Sample of Banner and Cinema Slide NVD functions were held in 27,793 polling station locations and at the district level. Young and new voters were felicitated on the occasion. EPICs and badges were distributed to 5,31,808 electors. Badges with the logo Proud to be a voter- Ready to Vote were handed over to the newly registered voters present. BLO distributing EPICs at Polling Station - Koraput Newly registered voters proudly displaying their EPICs - Kandhamal Booth level NVD at Kandhamal Essay, painting & debate competitions (with theme of Greater Participation for a Stronger Democracy ) were organized at district level to create voter awareness. 4 The Voters Pledge was administed to all the newly registered electors present during the function. The high school students were administered the Voters Pledge by the Head of Academic Institutions on the National Voters Day. The School and Mass Education Department had suspended classes after 2 PM in those schools which were polling stations for celebration of the Day. BLO administering the Voters Pledge - Jajpur Taking the Pledge - Kalahandi District Level Function - Jajpur In the Multi media campaign with focus on youth, following activities were taken up: Display advertisements in 10 Oriya dailies and one English daily were published Radio jingles through State network of All India Radio was broadcast during the period 20 th -25 th January Four short advertisement films prepared by I & P.R. Department was telecast through Doordarshan during the period 19 th -25 th January Celebrities from film, sports and other fields lent their services in the short films to create a better impact on the youth. Slides on the NVD were prepared and provided to DEOs which was screened in cinema halls throughout the State for voters awareness. SMS on NVD were sent to about 20,000 mobile phone users on 24 th January The message read National Voters Day- 25 th January Be proud to be a voter- participate for a stronger democracy in English and Oriya. English and Oriya version of film Indian Elections- A mammoth exercise was screened at the district level functions, block level, municipality and at other locations as part of the celebrations. 5 From the districts... The NVD function was attended by PRI representatives, social activists, Principals/ Heads of academic Institutions, NGO and media representatives. Bi-cycle rally among school/ college students, NCC and NSS students was held in Boudh, Dhenkanal, Koraput, Kalahandi, Balasore and Mayurbhanj Districts. Awareness Rally by School Students - Koraput NVD Rally - Koraput Flagging off Bi-cycle Rally - Boudh Voter awareness Rally - Boudh BLO Leading the Voters in a Padayatra - Koraput Leaflets highlighting the significance of NVD were distributed in Kandhamal district. Debate, essay and painting competitions among high school and college students were held in all the district headquarters. Merit certificates were distributed to the winners. NVD functions have been documented through photography. Symposium and discussion was held in three prominent colleges in Bhubaneswar to educate the youth on democracy and participate in elections. Five prominent poets recited their poems revolving around democratic themes in Rayagada. A Mini-Marathon race was conducted at Malkangiri in which about 200 students and public participated.
