New Zealand s Rating on the World Corruption Index Leveraging Trust How the New Zealand Story* Benefits the Seafood Industry Seafood Industry NZ Conference Wednesday, 19 August 2015, Shed 6, Wellington * Suzanne Snively (ONZM), Chair Transparency International New Zealand Inc (TINZ) suzanne.snively@paradise.net.nz
Assessing New Zealand Corruption Transparency International publishes the: TI Corruption Perceptions Index(TI-CPI) The TI CPI ranks countries by international perceptions of public sector corruption. The NZ chapter found this perception was valid through the 2013 NZ National Integrity System Assessment (NIS). According to the 2013 NZ National Integrity Systems Assessment published December 2013, (see New Zealand s institutions generally scored well for integrity, but the systems are fragile. 2

Corruption and Bribery Harm Reputation Bribery and corruption have a corrosive effect on countries, communities and individuals. The damage that a single incident can cause to an organisation s reputation is poorly understood. It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you ll do things differently Warren Buffett 4
TINZ Role Prevention can be better managed in New Zealand we need to increase our awareness to do so TINZ Role Achieve transparent and corruption-free practices in NZ. Work with people and organisations to address and prevent corruption by building strong integrity systems. Work with people and organisations to harvest the benefits of a reputation for integrity. 5
Trusted Stewardship of the Sea YOU are already playing a vital role in addressing transparency and anti-corruption through your current approach protecting the value of New Zealand s seafood resource! Are YOU also building pride in good practice and promoting this to your stakeholders? 6
New Zealand Ranking New Zealand is a Unique Yellow Zone Country It demonstrates ethical, transparent, and corruption-free practices It observes international anti-corruption conventions It goes to market with the New Zealand Story conveying the values of integrity and kaitiaki In this way strong integrity systems operate as antidotes to corruption 7
Opportunity to be Proud Every New Zealander benefits from a trusted public sector, good governance & strong integrity: Opportunity to be proud. Leading to a growing and sustainable customer base. Creating a positive spiral, increasing the stability of NZ financial markets, underpinning a stronger economy. GENERATING INFINITE POSSIBILITY (Instead of constraint and finite resource limitation) 8
Deloitte s Survey There is domestic corruption in NZ Deloitte s 2015 survey into perceived incidence of Bribery and Corruption in New Zealand and Australia highlighted that: bribery and corruption risk is on-going that domestic corruption is real and is rapidly rising. Corrupt behaviour is more prevalent than believed 23% of organisations experienced at least 1 case in the last 5 years. Many organisations are ill-equipped to counteract corruption. 9
Managing Corruption Risk Here s what to do to prevent Corruption: 1. Having a policy covering Codes of Conduct and guidelines 2. Communication and training re anti-corruption plans 3. Oversight by governance committed to integrity 4. Awareness of relevant legislation 5. Regular risk assessments that uncover corrupt practice 6. Due diligence of distributors, agents, joint ventures 7. Avenues for reporting breaches in your ethical standards Then YOU can harvest 7 benefits of being trusted. 10
Strong Integrity Systems Benefit Organisations There are many unrealised benefits because of the international perception of NZ s integrity Reputation and Brand international perceptions about a country are powerful galvanisers drawing global interest in New Zealand products and services. Do your customers, suppliers, distributors and other stakeholders know how trusted NZ is internationally? Are YOU developing your strategies and budgeting around the New Zealand Story?

New Zealand Story 13
Strong Integrity Systems Benefit Organisations The outcomes from integrity that contribute directly to your productivity and profitability are: 1) Reputation 2) Lower cost of doing business 3) Lower cost of capital 4) Easier market access 5) Higher rate of return on investment 6) Staff prefer to work for ethical organisations 7) Ethical organisations have more customer support 14
The Economy Benefits Too Trust is an economic as well as an ethical, constitutional and social value providing opportunities for YOU beyond business as usual. The economic zones in the Pacific could be the sources of sustainable, renewable resources IF there is good governance ensuring transparent monitoring & reporting that the resources are renewable & protected There are future opportunities in the wider Pacific for you through strengthening integrity systems there 15
Benefits Include Plentiful Pacific Resources 16
Transparency and the Seafood Industry Partnership The Seafood Industry has values that are aligned with being part of Trusted Team New Zealand.. to increase the opportunities for the industry. 18 Positive Spiral for NZ Financial Market & Economy THE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY IS A LEADER Being proud of New Zealand s reputation, our values and supporting our public sector integrity systems Integrating these values into your routine business practice and strategy for sustainability Being a global leader in environmental governance In this way: New Zealand s asset of trust becomes an infinite asset for growing your balance sheets and stakeholder base GENERATING INFINITE POSSIBILITY (Instead of constraint and finite resource limitation) 18
We can do it every New Zealand organisation can move into a permanent positive spiral! New Zealand's future DISCLAIMER is enveloped in water and sea. You hold the key to ensure there is plentiful renewable resources. This benefits you, the Seafood Industry and the New Zealand Story
