5 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 5 Commentary: Ron Knecht My favorite athlete: Sandy Koufax To remind us how good things can be despite baseball s current turmoil, a tribute to my favorite athlete, Sandy Koufax. One of the best pitchers ever, his story is almost a fairy tale, beginning with Humble Origins, The Talent, And The Trials. Born middle-class in Brooklyn, tall, handsome, athletic and studious, he was a college walk-on in basketball and baseball. He could throw harder than anyone else, but was wild. Still, he became a 19-year-old bonus baby with his home-town Dodgers in Struggling for six years, with flashes of brilliance, injuries and periods riding the bench, he quit at the end of 1960, throwing away his glove and spikes. Then came The Turning Point. He decided to try once more and trained hard off-season for the first time. Starting a spring-training game, he walked the bases full on 12 pitches. Catcher Norm Sherry asked him to ease up on his pitches for better control, and being modest and coachable, he gave it a try. He struck out the next three batters, pitched a no-hitter, and knew that day that everything had changed. The Courageous Hero: In , Koufax had perhaps the best six-year performance of any pitcher ever, with records, awards and distinctions far too numerous to list Tips Of Our Cap and Bronx Cheers The Penny Press Tips Its Cap To: D. Taylor, the head of the national hotel workers union, which says it is bitterly disappointed with the Affordable Care Act, who met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. A Nevada State Bar disciplinary panel which recommended that former Nevada political powerbroker Harvey Whittemore be allowed to keep his law license until the appeal of his three felony convictions for violating campaign finance laws is decided. Now, if only they re take Harry Reid s license away. Reid asked for the money and took it and said nothing. The Penny Press Sends A Bronx Cheer And A Bouquet of Weeds To: here. He also suffered extremely painful injuries, including traumatic arthritis in his pitching arm beginning in 1964 that worsened until he retired. He fought it with numerous pain-killers, prescription drugs, and regular ice baths for his arm and barely avoided losing complete use of the arm from continuing to pitch while injured. But more than performance, courage and statistics, there was His Character. He was as good a person as a pitcher the main reason he is so revered. Before, during and after his playing days, he was likeable, but quiet and reserved; home-oriented, yet nomadic; a mentor. He was humble, decent, kind, generous and considerate to all (especially everyday folks), and authentic. A dedicated perfectionist in the things he did (even gourmet cooking). Fellow Dodger Hall-of- Famer Don Sutton said, He was a star who didn t feel he was a star. And The Moment of Truth: Dominating the game in 1965, he declined to pitch the opening contest of the World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur. When you re 16 and your hero does something like that, it leaves an indelible impression on you. It was his religion, not mine, but his firm resolve on principle and quiet dignity commanded total respect. Then, he pitched the second, fifth and seventh games the last on two days rest for a final championship and the series Most Valuable Player award. The Afterglow: After the 1966 series, he retired at 30, no longer able to take the constant pain and damage endangering his arm. In his last 26 days, he pitched seven times for five complete-game wins, a 1.07 earned-run average, and a pennant clincher on two days rest. Leaving at the top of his career after holding nothing back and giving the game his all, he assured that we ll always remember him in his golden prime, as baseball s best knight. In 1972, upon first eligibility, he became the youngest player ever elected to its Hall of Fame. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named him its favorite athlete of the century. SI s story showed he was not driven by money or fame he could have had much more of each for the taking but by love of the game and role-model instincts. RON KNECHT Ron Knecht of Carson City is an economist, law school graduate and Nevada higher education regent. District Judge Valerie Adair who refused to grant a new trial for California businessman John Conforte for battery on a Clark County bailiff despite the fact it has officially come to the court s attention that the bailiff in question has a record of using excessive force which Adair called deeply troubling. 6 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 6 OPINION From The Publisher... Public Money In Sports Is Obamacare For Billionaires The metropolis of Las Vegas is facing a question often faced by localities large and small. Should the public be paying for in any way shape or form a new stadium or a new stadium/arena? Let me tell you a historical tale and let you decide for yourself. Back in the early 1990s, I bought a radio station in Las Vegas. One of my best customers was the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino which was built, owned and operated and I mean literally operated by the late Ralph Engelstad. One day, I got a summons from Connie Ross who was the doyenne of advertising and publicity directors on the Las Vegas Strip. Ralph would like to see you about the Speedway. What he wanted was an official radio station for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway which he and Richie Clyne designed on the back of an envelope in the Mai Tai Lounge one night at the hotel and wasn t that much further along except that the land had been acquired and construction was starting. Ralph and Richie built the largest facility in the state with NO public money except for the roads that had to be built to accommodate all the traffic which the Speedway brought when it was holding an event. The Speedway was built with private money. Ralph would not have dreamed of going to the Clark County Commission and asking for a subsidy. Since the Speedway hosted its first Winston Cup event in 1998, it has attracted BILLIONS of dollars of economic ripple to the area. Ralph sold the Speedway to Bruton Smith s Speedway Motorsports, Inc. in 1999 and Bruton has spent millions improving the facility (which was a little like polishing the Hope Diamond), again with private sector money. In fact, for a little less than $20, you can own a share of that and seven other race tracks and you d be hard pressed to find any government money in the company except for the infrastructure the various governments built to get the taxpayers in and out of the facilities. For the record, what came about from the back of that envelope now hosts the top three sporting events in the state every year both in terms of attendance and economic impact. Contrast that with the various groups who want to build stadiums, arenas and dual use facilities either on the strip or downtown or in Henderson. Every developer who pops up in Las Vegas and it s like watching a game of Whack-A-Mole starts by saying they ll build it with private sector funds and, very soon, starts to talk about a public-private partnership which is crony capitalism speak you pay and we get rich. And if you think that this is limited to big towns like Las Vegas, look at the morons on the Reno City Council who have agreed to spend $1,000,000 a year for the next 29 years of the taxpayers money to pay off Aces stadium. Aces stadium was build with tax increment financing. In other words, because there would be substantially more real estate tax paid in the area because the stadium would encourage redevelopment, the city would kick in part of that increase to pay off the construction loan. Only there wasn t. And the very rich owners of the Aces (the AAA affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks) told the city that if they didn t help than they would take their team and go somewhere else. Instead of telling those owners not to let the doorknob hit them in the ass, the City Council folded like a cheap suit. Football, baseball and basketball are great sports. So is NASCAR. But, in a sluggish economy, the NASCAR people take care of themselves and the other sports are on your payroll. Hell, in a booming economy the NASCAR people take care of themselves and the other sports are on your payroll. Think about that when you hear a politician bloviate about economic development because what that really means is paying a hooker to create a red light district that you spend your time trying to stay away from. Harsh? Think about it. It s Obamacare for billionaires. FRED WEINBERG

7 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 7 Commentary: Doug French Don t Fight the Fed Don t tug on Superman s cape. Don t spit into the wind. And most definitely, don t fight the Fed. That s what they say on Wall Street. When the central bank is printing, get your money in stocks. When the PhDs at the Eccles Building take away the punchbowl, turn out the lights and sell your stocks the party s over. Don t believe it? Google Don t fight the Fed, and you ll get 468 million results. Before the late Martin Zweig was a legendary investor who never fought the tape, he was teaching finance at Baruch College and Iona College, and his byword was, Don t fight the Fed. Philippe Gijsels, the head of research at BNP Paribas Fortis Global Market in Brussels, told CNBC in 2011, The famous saying do not fight the Fed has worked for the last 20-odd years. We are now entering year six of the post-lehman Brothers era, and the Fed s occupation of the market looks to be permanent. The new normal doesn t seem so normal as Ben Bernanke has desperately tried to pry everyone s money out from under their mattresses and into stocks. However, this is a market that Jim Grant describes as a hall of mirrors. The Fed s looking glass makes some things tall, some things small. Objective value is nowhere to be found; instead, certain rates are scripted by a central bank that can only set a price for short-term interest rates with really little clue as to what the outcomes of that monetary command and control will be. Now Janet Yellen takes over as Atlas, with world markets resting uncomfortably on her shoulders. Further shrugging may send nervous investors for the exits, not only in the US, but around the world. The least bit of monetary slowing, rather than a wide-open throttle, is now viewed by the world s monetary elite as the stuff of black swans. This [tapering] is a new risk on the horizon and really needs to be watched, Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the IMF, said at Davos over the weekend. Aren t you glad you re living through, investing in, and your retirement depending upon navigating this terribly interesting, manipulated market? Actually, you should be. As crazy as it sounds, this kind of market turmoil makes millionaires and your time may well have come. More and more contrarian investors who know how to prosper from chaos and have done so before are convinced that we are now looking at one of the greatest opportunities in recent years to make a fortune. 9 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 9 Why Chris Christie s Problem is a Problem for American Conservatives By LUKE HAMILTON Special to the Penny Press The scandal involving Governor Chris Christie and a retributive construction project near the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey is bad news for conservatives. It s not bad news for conservatives the same way it s bad news for Reince Priebus, John Boehner, and Karl Rove, because those guys were hoping that Chris would get elected to the Presidency and bolster the flaccid progressive party they re running. He was their blue-chip prospect - a sassy East Coast politician who loves Big Government as much as they do. They don t mind one bit that Christie has a history of playing footsie with some unsavory characters like Mohammed Qatanani, an imam who s also a proud member of Hamas. His admirers also don t seem to mind that he believes global warming is real and that illegal immigrants should be rewarded for flouting the law with citizenship. Instead of deal-breakers, all of these facets of Christie serve to make him even more attractive to his fellow progressives in the GOP leadership. The reason his indiscretion and inevitable decline is bad for conservatives is because it will make it very difficult for him to mount a serious Presidential campaign. A Christie campaign for President in 2016 would be an enormous boon for conservatives for a number of reasons: 1) It would mean that the primary would be contentious and the dead wood would get trimmed quickly, 2) The primary would serve as an ideal battleground to test the heft and mettle of our eventual candidate, making him/her ready for the fight in the general election, 3) Christie would do quite a bit of damage to the Democratic candidates throughout the course of the primary, 4) Conservative candidates would have a perfect target to make their case to the American people for liberty over progressivism. One of the reasons John McCain emerged to secure the Republican nomination in 2008 was because support was so fractured for so long and the nomination process became a high stakes version of spin-the-bottle. A contentious primary will turn off a certain segment of American voters, but it will reinvigorate a more important segment of American voters who have been waiting for someone to pick a fight on their behalf. There is a reason why Sarah Palin continues to resonate so deeply with so many people and it s because she opened with a straight jab and a left hook as soon as she got on stage. Chris Christie is not in the same league as Palin when it comes to principled conservatism and moral fiber, but he s good at picking a fight and won t suffer fools gladly. He would serve as a goad for the candidates with promise and a hammer for the ones without. The past two Presidential contests have produced such milksop Republican candidates because the primaries have been hopscotch practice instead of 10 rounds of sparring before the big fight. Sure, they got occasionally contentious, but the fact that the man who created Romneycare emerged to challenge the man who created Obamacare demonstrates that Mitt s primary adversaries were unwilling or unable to pack a punch. Republican voters were (and are still) livid about the intrusion of mandatory socialized medicine in their lives and somehow ended up with someone who couldn t challenge President Obama on this crucial issue because he had to plead the 5th. Since Christie doesn t seem to like anyone in politics, aside from his BFF Barack, it s safe to say that his cantankerous nature would virtually guarantee a more strenuous primary for both our candidates and theirs; that can only lead to a Republican nominee whose fit and ready to face whoever the Democrats select from the Borg. Finally, a Christie Presidential campaign would make it easy for an eloquent conservative candidate to present the case for liberty to the American people. In Christie, we have a great example of Republican progressivism, in all its big-spending, strong-arming, façade-wearing glory. Like Boehner and Ryan et al, Christie doesn t have a problem with the expansion of government at the cost of liberty, he just wants to steer the car. He doesn t want to fight Obamacare, he wants to use it to benefit his cronies at the corporatist trough. The right candidate could demonstrate that no matter which way the coin lands, Obama or Boehner, we re still stuck with a plugged nickel. The choice is not between Democrat and Republican, the options are much slimmer than that; the choice is between slavery and freedom, between servitude and liberty. Every action a politician takes moves us closer to slavery or closer to freedom. The 2016 Presidential campaign will be a referendum on liberty. Or it won t. In which case, we can expect more brazen deprivations of rights and a more rapid slide into imperial totalitarianism. In a way, it s too bad that he got caught with his hand stuck in the cookie jar. He could have been very beneficial to constitutional conservatives who are ready to fight for their country. He could have served as the equivalent of a hard lump of sandstone, useful for thumping the losers and for sharpening the winner.

10 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 10 Commentary: Jon Huntsman What If? What if, in the weeks leading up to the State of the Union address, the president invited the leader of the opposition party to the White House to talk about their goals for the country? What if the two leaders focused on their areas of agreement and drew up a list of the objectives that they both want to achieve? What if the president then delivered an address that spoke to and for all Americans, not just one party, and that brought the entire audience, not just one side of the House chamber, to its feet? What if there were no need for an opposition response? Pure fantasy? I don t think so. This consensus-driven approach to governing is not only possible but necessary if we are to break the cycle of fighting and gridlock that has paralyzed our political process. As a former governor, I know it can work. I ve seen Republican and Democratic colleagues bring about progress and innovation by building relationships with political opponents and working with them to pass budgets and other vital bills. They would look for the best ideas and practices and forge a vision that reflects the aspirations of both political parties and the collective interests of constituents. We did this in Utah. We can do this as a country. As a co-chair of No Labels, a movement of Democrats, Republicans and independents who value problem-solving over partisan point-scoring, I m helping to launch a three-year campaign for a governing process that we believe can bring about the kind of wholesale change in Washington that Americans seek and that the country desperately needs. The process begins with both sides coming together to discuss and develop goals for the country that they both support. The mutually agreedupon goals would form the basis for a national strategic agenda, a shared vision of where our country is headed and what it can achieve. Today, the default mode in Washington is to fight. On health care, immigration, the national debt and other issues, too many leaders retreat to their partisan corners before there s a clear sense of where we re headed. If members of both parties came together first to determine overall goals and destinations, the hard work of developing policy would go more smoothly. History is full of success stories from this sort of goals first process. The mid-1990s were replete with government shutdowns and dueling agendas. But once Democratic President Bill Clinton and Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich agreed on the goal of balancing the federal budget, they got it done. Similarly, President Ronald Reagan and House Speaker Tip O Neill crossed swords on foreign policy, the size of government and more. But their effectiveness was based on more than their famous collegiality. They found common ground in goals such as their mutual desire to make the tax code simpler and fairer. Once they agreed to that objective, they created a bipartisan coalition that enacted one of the most comprehensive tax reforms in U.S. history. In the past century, our nation has rallied around such bold agendas as universal public education, the interstate highway system and sending a man to the moon. These goals mobilized political will across the partisan spectrum and led to landmark achievements. But little progress has been made in the past decade, especially in the economic matters crucial to U.S. competitiveness. The United States is unusual in not having a national strategy and we re losing ground as a result. Political leaders like to talk about forging consensus and being uniters, not dividers, but they seldom explain how they would achieve this political holy grail. No Labels call for a new governing process developing goals together that provide the shared vision for a national agenda is a blueprint. The American people, if not their elected officials, are fairly united on major goals for the nation. No Labels asked more than 1,000 registered voters late last year what our government should be focused on. Majorities from both parties pointed to priorities such as creating 25 million jobs in the next 10 years, securing Social Security and Medicare for the next 75 years, a balanced budget and energy self-sufficiency. We know the public is on board: In our poll, 80 percent said the country should have a unified agenda that reflects the goals of both parties by the time the next president takes office. What if the 45th president consulted with the opposition before taking the oath of office? What if he or she delivered an inaugural address that spoke to the hopes and dreams of both sides? It may sound like a fantasy. But if the alternative is the status quo, it s a fantasy worth making a reality. JON HUNTSMAN Jon Huntsman, a former Republican governor of Utah and former U.S. ambassador to China in the Obama administration, is co-chairman of No Labels.

11 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 11 Commentary: Matt Barber MLK: Homosexuality a Problem With a Solution Several weeks ago, America honored both the life and noble work of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., a Bible-believing Christian minister who did more to advance the cause of race-based civil rights than perhaps any other person in recent history. Regrettably and as they do each year the same flock of opportunist LGBT -activist vultures quickly swooped in, picking the live flesh from MLK s character-based dream, to advance their own behavior-based nightmare. In what amounts to a sort of soft racism, this mostly white left-wing faction has, over the years, disingenuously and ignobly hitched its little pink wagon to a civil rights movement that, by contrast, is built upon the genuine and noble precepts of racial equality and humanitarian justice. What was MLK s position on the homosexual lifestyle and so-called gay rights? While he said little in public on the issue, what he did say made his viewpoint abundantly clear. Unlike the LGBT lobby, I ll let Dr. King speak for himself. In 1958, while writing an advice column for Ebony Magazine, Dr. King responded to a young gay man looking for guidance. To avoid being accused of cherry-picking, here is the exchange in its entirety: Question: My problem is different from the ones most people have. I am a boy, but I feel about boys the way I ought to feel about girls. I don t want my parents to know about me. What can I do? Is there any place where I can go for help? Answer: Your problem is not at all an uncommon one. However, it does require careful attention. The type of feeling that you have toward boys is probably not an innate tendency, but something that has been culturally acquired. Your reasons for adopting this habit have now been consciously suppressed or unconsciously repressed. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with this problem by getting back to some of the experiences and circumstances that led to the habit. In order to do this I would suggest that you see a good psychiatrist who can assist you in bringing to the forefront of conscience all of those experiences and circumstances that led to the habit. You are already on the right road toward a solution, since you honestly recognize the problem and have a desire to solve it. No amount of leftist spin can muddy Dr. King s lucid position on the homosexual lifestyle. He recognized it as a culturally acquired problem in need of a solution a habit stemming from a series of negative experiences and circumstances. Although homosexual activists desperately cling to the fact that, after his death, Dr. King s wife, Coretta Scott King, did voice some level of support for the homosexualist political agenda, the undeniable reality remains that, based upon his own words, Dr. King supported neither homosexual conduct nor LGBT political activism. Indeed, it strains credulity to suggest that MLK would have thrown his weight behind a political movement hell-bent on justifying sexual appetites and behaviors that he properly identified as a problem demanding a a solution a type of feeling that requires careful attention up to and including see[ing] a good psychiatrist. No, MLK was a Christian minister who both embraced and articulated the biblical love the sinner, hate the sin model on homosexuality. Every Christian should follow his lead. After all, it is the lead set by Christ Himself. Gary Glenn is a candidate for the Michigan State House. He is also president of the pro-family group AFA Michigan. Of Dr. King s public position on homosexuality, Glenn recently noted a glaring if not utterly twisted irony: If homosexual activists had been holding awards ceremonies back in 1958, wrote Glenn, they would have labeled Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. a bigot for his published views on homosexual attraction. And under today s Orwellian hate crimes laws in Britain and other countries of Europe, he concluded, Dr. King would have faced criminal investigation, or worse, for publicly expressing those views. Indeed, were he still alive today, and when judged against today s empty, politically correct standards, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quite literally the King of civil rights would be perpetually smeared as a bigot, hater and homophobe by the ever- tolerant left. The polls are unequivocal. The vast majority of African-Americans resent the left s comparison of sexual sin to the color of their skin. They understandably find such dishonest parallels both repugnant and highly offensive. And well they should. The left has hijacked MLK s dream. For decades now, this pleasurebased, sex-centric political movement delineated by deviant sexual appetites and behaviors has ridden his coattails. They ve dared to equate demands for celebration of bad behavior to Christian notions of racial equality. They ve perverted the genuine civil rights movement to fit their own disingenuous designs. It s disgusting and it needs to stop. Dr. Alveda King is the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She agrees. Alveda has picked up her like-minded uncle s civil rights mantle, dedicating her life, primarily, to achieving equality for pre-born children. Still, in the years since his death, Alveda has poignantly articulated how, arguably, based upon his published position on homosexuality, Dr. King might feel about LGBT activists misappropriation of his Christian legacy for their counter-christian purposes. To equate homosexuality with race is to give a death sentence to civil rights, said Alveda in No one is enslaving homosexuals or making them sit in the back of the bus. In 1998 at the University of North Carolina, she said, Homosexuality cannot be elevated to the civil rights issue. The civil rights movement was born from the Bible. God hates homosexuality. And in 2012, Alveda publicly chastised the NAACP for abandoning its founders and constituents, saying, Neither my great-grandfather, an NAACP founder, my grandfather Dr. Martin Luther King Sr., an NAACP leader, my father, Rev. A. D. Williams King, nor my uncle Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. embraced the homosexual agenda that the current NAACP is attempting to label as a civil rights agenda. Indeed, it is high time that all supporters, from all races, of the historical civil rights movement stand together and demand that progressive propagandists stop misusing and abusing the language of genuine civil rights to propagate self-interested moral wrongs. It s time for the left to begin honoring the true beliefs, work, life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. MATT BARBER Matt Barber (@jmattbarber on Twitter) is an author, columnist, cultural analyst and an attorney concentrating in constitutional law. 14 THE PENNY PRESS,FEBRUARY 6, 2014 PAGE 14 Commentary: Chuck Muth Every week in Nevada, Some Random Observations from the 2014 Campaign Trail The myth that conservatives who want increased immigration enforcement are just anti-hispanic has now been proved a lie. Indeed, the #1 target for deportation in the United States today isn t Mexican, but Canadian: Justin Bieber! That said, anyone wanting to contact their congressman to voice their opinion on the new Ryan Amnesty Act of 2014 can call the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) Actually, you can use this number to call Congress on any issue, not just immigration. This year s Republican response to the State of the Union Address was, once again, HORRIBLE. And don t give me this crud about how tough it is for anyone to follow POTUS after his SOTU. The GOP needs to stop delivering boring, uninspiring, cookie-cutter, inside-the-beltway speeches prepared by professional speechwriters and instead try talking like, you know, real people. Democrats in Nevada have had a field day with the announcement that former liberal lieutenant governor Sue Wagner left the Republican Party because, she says, it s shifted too far to the right. Two things: First, Sue Wagner hasn t been an active Nevada Republican for over 20 years. Secondly, Wagner is so liberal she makes Gov. Brian Sandoval (R&R-Partners) look like a Bircher. Her departure from the GOP is neither meaningful nor a big loss. While bending over backwards to raise a bundle of cash for R&R Partners hand-picked lieutenant governor candidate, Moderate Mark Hutchison, word on the street is that Gov. Brian Sandoval (R&R Partners) has barely lifted a finger for GOP attorney general candidate Adam Laxalt, who is running against R&R Partners anointed candidate in that race, Democrat Secretary of State Ross Miller. Democrat congressional candidate Erin Bilbray s gang-that-couldn tshoot-straight campaign recently lost her highly-regarded campaign manager, Bradley Mayer, and replaced him with a liberal abortion rights activist with no experience as a campaign manager and whose main claim to fame is working on a past Nancy Pelosi campaign. I still think the Democrats problem isn t the wrong campaign manager in this race, but the wrong candidate. Conservative Assemblyman Ira Hansen (R-Washoe) says government bureaucrats from the Nevada Department of Wildlife have a vendetta against him which is behind its filing of four misdemeanor counts of unlawfully setting traps. And when you look at the actual law, it s hard to argue his point. It s also another reminder: The more money you give government, the more harassment of this sort the government is able to rain upon us citizens. Since the Legislature has refused to act, conservative activist Sharron Angle has filed a ballot initiative that, if approved, would require everyone to show a photo ID before voting, just like the photo ID you have to show before boarding a plane or cashing a check. Makes sense. Just do it. CHUCK MUTH (Mr. Muth is president of Citizen Outreach, a conservative grassroots advocacy organization. He can be reached at someone is trying to screw us.
