2 First President recalls the day Malta became a republic Malta's first President, Sir Anthony Mamo, yesterday recalled that wintry, rainy day 32 years ago when the country became a republic. "It was a very big day for me. I had been wanting to see Malta as a republic for a very long time. My wife got drenched waiting for me outside the Palace while I inspected a guard of honour. But it was undoubtedly the biggest day of my life." Sir Anthony was born in Birkirkara in He graduated as a lawyer in In 1971, he was appointed Malta's first Governor-General. Malta was ruled by a Prime Minister but the Head of State was the British Queen. The Head of State was no longer the Queen but became the President of Malta. Chosen by Parliament every five years. Trade Unions were set up, its effects were felt worldwide, the rise of political parties, it became richer. The Employer and the employee.
