PRE-GENERALS PAPERS Beyond Bad Apples and Teacher s Pets: The Effects of Teachers Disciplinary Practices on Student s School-Related Behavior. Advisors: Frank Dobbin Marta Tienda Abstract: This paper examines the effects of different disciplinary practices on students school-related behavior. It compares a behavior modification approach to student discipline with an approach that emphasizes the importance of establishing reciprocal teacher-student communication. In particular, it explores the effects of teacher praise and criticism and the effects of reciprocal teacher-student communication on three school-related behaviors: 1) an index of classroom behavior (e.g., paying attention and being disruptive in class); 2) the propensity to cut class; and 3) hours spent doing homework. Based on attribution theory and much psychological research, the hypotheses is made that teacher praise is likely to be an ineffective means of promoting student discipline, while criticism is likely to have a foster misbehavior. Drawing on theories and disciplinary models that emphasize the importance of reciprocal communication for establishing teacher-student relationships that will promote discipline, the hypothesis is made that students who feel that their teachers listen to them are more likely to behave in a manner conducive to school success. This research used data from the NELS survey from in order to test these hypotheses. The analyses largely confirm the hypothesized relationships Page 1 of 17
2 Caveat Voter! Political Awareness and Susceptibility to Framing Effects. Advisors: Paul DiMaggio Adam Berinsky (politics) Abstract: Research has shown that how a question is framed affects public opinion. Almost all of the research on this issue assumes that susceptibility to framing effects is uniformly distributed across the population. I adopt theoretical insights and empirical findings first suggested by Converse (1964) and more recently elaborated by Zaller (1992), which suggests that people with greater political awareness are better able to understand the implications of what they hear and relate this to their political predispositions. I hypothesize that greater political awareness also reduces susceptibility to framing effects. Using logistic regression, I show that, regardless of their political affiliation and demographic characteristics, people with higher levels of political awareness are less susceptible to framing effects.
