International Law Institute (ILI), (1991, Washington, D.C.) RESEARCH GRANTS PERSONAL Project on Rule of Law in the Middle East and Islamic World. Obtained $18,035 in Spring 2004 from IRIS at University of Maryland, which was paid to hire WCL students and for other overhead expenses. Our project at AU/WCL was specifically funded to look at certain areas where restraints on state was deemed to be important in terms of governance criteria developed by European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBTD). The countries studied were Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. In the first part of the research we looked at six areas identified by IRIS: 1. Publication of Laws (frequency, transparency, availability, etc.), 2. Public Input into Policy (official and non-official mechanisms for public input, comment, standards), 3. Retroactivity of laws (extent, policy, etc.). 4. Expropriation of Property (permissible, compensation, criteria, resources, etc.), 5. Individual Rights to Protect Commercial Rights, 6. Administrative Interpretation, and 7. Judicial Independence. The second part of the research looked at the law of the six countries in the following areas: 1. Insolvency Law, 2. Company or Corporations Law, 3. Secured Lending, and 4. Enforcement of Commercial Agreements. Languages: English and Persian.
