Morton YMCA of Greater Boston Jeanette Robichaud CEO, Athol Area YMCA Gary Schuyler YMCA Southcoast OUR PROCESS The Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs Board of Directors commissioned the Strategic Planning Task Force to review and revise the Alliance s strategic plan. This plan was approved by the board on November 19, The task force met over several months prior to presentation of the plan to the Board for final approval. This plan reflects the Alliance s continuing and future role in service to Ys in the Commonwealth. Local and national trends continue to be factors in defining how we will strengthen our capacity to serve Ys and explore the opportunities to make the Alliance responsive to Ys solving critical social issues. This is a living plan; we are committed to long-term impact, recognizing it requires adapting our strategies as our environment, the needs of Massachusetts citizens and the needs of our member Ys change. OUR MISSION The Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs, Inc. exists to support and serve member Ys, which are all leading nonprofit charitable community service organizations, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. OUR PURPOSE About Our Alliance The Alliance of Massachusetts YMCA's, by influencing public policy and connection to evidenced based solutions, supports and advocates on behalf of its member Ys to share their collective impact with one voice to solve critical social issues in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. The Ys in Massachusetts are unique nonprofits in their service to their communities. With 31 Y Associations and over 370 locations in the state serving one in five (one million) residents of the Commonwealth each year, Ys are uniquely positioned to provide and partner for lasting social change. Working as one, we are committed to solving critical social issues. 5 Our Strategies Our Purpose: The Alliance of Massachusetts YMCA's, by influencing public policy and connection to evidenced based solutions, supports and advocates on behalf of its member Ys to share their collective impact with one voice to solve critical social issues in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. I. Organizational Impact: We will leverage our brand and capacity to speak with one voice, emphasizing our collective impact, through strategic relationships that strengthen Ys throughout Massachusetts to advance the cause of our Ys. Strategy #1: Communicate Y priorities and program impacts regularly, both internally and externally, with a unified message representing the collective strength and impact of YMCAs in Massachusetts. 6 Strategy #2: Build committed relationships, with appointed and elected public officials (local, state and federal), community and other key leaders and partners, sharing agreed upon messages regarding the Y s mission and charitable cause. II. Programmatic Impact: We will positively impact and shape public policy I (budgetary, legislative, regulatory) at all levels of government (local, state, federal) to position Ys to collaboratively solve critical social issues. Strategy #1: Monitor and influence policy that impact Ys sustainability, viability, and focus areas. Strategy #2: Create a new approach regarding evidence based statewide initiatives that address critical social issues, allowing for flexibility regarding local adoption, implementation and measurement. Strategy #3: Identify and take advantage of statewide funding opportunities to address critical social issues. III. Operational Impact: Leverage the collective strengths of Ys and their volunteer leadership to address statewide priorities. Strategy #1: The Alliance that utilizes the full range of Y resources to be responsive to the needs of Ys in serving their communities to solve critical social issues. 8 OUR BIG QUESTIONS Big Questions are designed to move us toward consensus on our understanding of major opportunities or challenges facing the Alliance prior to developing a strategy to address it. The Alliance of Massachusetts YMCAs Board of Directors identified the following Big Questions where Alliance will collectively give their time, energy and resources to proactively address. Overall: 1. How do we maximize our one voice and collective impact? Statewide Initiatives: Policy: 2. Based on capacity and finite resources, how do we prioritize initiatives? 3. How do we facilitate meaningful communication between Ys regarding alignment and sustainability? 4. How do we influence policy that supports the sustainability, mission, and work of Ys? 5.
