Do Now: Place the Presidents in the correct chronological order Election of 1960 President Roosevelt President Eisenhower President Truman President Hoover Who is next? The Election of 1960 First Television Debate Many believe Kennedy s appearance on TV helped him get elected Kennedy wins by fewer than 119,000 votes 1
John F. Kennedy Kennedy s Inaugural Address "Let every nation know... that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, to assure the survival and the success of liberty." ask not what your country can do for youask what you can do for your country. Kennedy s Domestic Program Limited Success of the New Frontier The New Frontier Goals Aid for education Medical care for the elderly Increase minimum wage End to poverty Civil rights Increased military spending and the space race Congress did not support the New Frontier and did not vote for it!!! 2
His Greatest Success was funding and supporting NASA and Space Race Kennedy Promises to put a man on the moon by the end of the 60 s 1969: Neil Armstrong lands on the moon Foreign Policy Flexible response measures other then nuclear weapons could be used to contain communism 3
Kennedy reauthorizes the Green Beret -volunteers sent to give aid to developing or poor countries -2 year commitment Volunteers work with local governments, communities, schools, and small businesses to address education, health and HIV/AIDS, business and information communication technology (ICT), environment, agriculture, and youth development. Army Special Forces Secret covert operations Stop communist revolutions Sent to Vietnam Alliance for Progress Billions of Aid sent to South and Central America Establish democracy and improve standard of living Bay of Pigs Invasion In Cuba, Fidel Castro declared himself a communist and welcomed aid from the Soviet Union. Considered a failure 4
Bay of Pigs Invasion April 1961 CIA trained Cuban exiles invade Cuba to overthrow Castro Major failure and embarrassment for Kennedy 68 killed, 1209 captured Berlin Crisis Soviets demand that the US leave Berlin JFK would not be bullied and refused Gives a Speech at Berlin Wall to renew America s commitment to the city Ich bin ein Berliner (I am a Berliner) Cuban Missile Crisis October 1962, photographs reveal Soviet missile bases in Cuba Nuclear Missiles had the capability of reaching almost every major city 5
If you were Kennedy, What would you do? The US creates a blockade around Cuba so Soviet Ships cannot deliver missiles Soviet ships are approaching Cuba For a 13 days, nuclear war and massive destruction was a distinct possibility for every American. If they continue the Navy will sink them and possibly start a war 6
The Soviets Back Down Soviets agree to dismantle the missile bases Kennedy promises not to invade Cuba. US and Soviets sign Treaty to limit Nuclear Bomb Tests com/history_lect ures/chapter28/ tar675.htm Tragedy in Dallas On November 22, 1963, President and Mrs. Kennedy went to Texas to mend political fences with members of the state s Democratic Party. 7
As the car approached a state building known as the Texas State Book Depository, rifle shots rang out. In 1963, the Warren Commission investigated and concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald had shot the president while acting on his own. 8
On Sunday, Nov. 24, millions watched Oswald being transferred between jails, a nightclub owner named Jack Ruby broke through the crowd and shot and killed Oswald. Johnson in the White House Upon Kennedy s death, Vice- President Lyndon Johnson became President of the United States. Lyndon Bain Johnson 36 th President ( ) Johnson was a powerful, ambitious man. 26 years Political Experience- He aimed to get things done The Johnson Treatment I felt from the first day in office that I had to carry on for President Kennedy. I considered myself the caretaker of both his people and his policies. - President Johnson 9
The Great Society The Great Society rests on abundance and liberty for all. It demands an end to poverty and racial injustice, to which we are totally committed in our time... The Great Society is a place where every child can find knowledge to enrich his mind and to enlarge his talents It is a place where man can renew contact with nature But most of all, the Great Society is not a safe harbor, a resting place, a final objective, a finished work. It is a challenge constantly renewed, beckoning us toward a destiny where the meaning of our lives matches the marvelous products of our labor So I want to talk to you today about three places where we begin to build the Great Society: in our cities, in our countryside, and in our classrooms The Great Society LBJ s domestic policy to improve America Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned discrimination based on race, gender, and religion in all public places & employment Voting Rights Act of 1965 Guaranteed equal voting rights to African Americans Goals End poverty and discrimination Improve healthcare and education Protect environment and consumers Strengthen economy 10
Great Society Programs VISTA- Volunteers in Service to America- Community service in areas of poverty Medicare- Government Health insurance to the elderly Medicaid- Government Health Insurance to the poor Head Start- Government funded Pre school programs for poor Praise Criticism Welfare State Government responsible for the well being of its citizens May provide economic aid, healthcare, unemployment to its citizens 11
Was the Great Society a Success? The Great Society Different from Kennedy because LBJ gets Congress to pass 206 of his bills Similar to Kennedy in the goals it set forth Similar to the New Deal - both attempt to end poverty - provide welfare to people - both increases size and responsibility of gov. Should Johnson be remembered as a great president? 12
