This recognition is given annually to a volunteer community leader who exemplifies the qualities of Hannah G. Solomon, founder of the National Council of Jewish Women. In 1993 she returned to UNO to take coursework towards a master s degree in business administration. 2 Presidential MESSAGE We must add our voices to those who cry out that there is a standard below which we will not allow human beings to live and that that standard is not at the freezing nor starving point. In a democracy, all are responsible. - Hannah Greenebaum Solomon Social Reformer and Founder of NCJW Women are running and winning! NCJW proudly takes stands on progressive views related to health care, immigration, reproductive rights, health and justice, education, child care. We are also laser-focused on criminal justice reform, economic security for women and violence prevention against women, voting rights, a fair judiciary and gun control. And with a record-breaking number of women running and winning political office, this could change the public debate on these and other issues important to improving the quality of life for women, children and families. Here are the facts: Currently, women account for just one fifth of 535 U.S. representatives and senators and one in four state lawmakers. Six of the nation s 50 governors are females. Meanwhile, women comprise slightly more than half the U.S. population. More women than ever before have won major party primaries for Governor, U.S. Senate and House this year setting a U.S. record. Most of these female hopefuls are Democrats. Two hundred women have won their primaries for U.S. House, with 94 of them surviving crowded fields with three or more candidates. Previously, the most women who succeeded in their primary bid were 167 in In the Senate, a record 19 women have won their primaries. For the first time, 13 women have been nominated for gubernatorial races in a single election year. No more than nine women have ever served as Governor at the same time. There are nearly 50 black women running for Congress this year. Black women are competing and winning not only in districts with a majority black electorate, but also in diverse districts across the country. According to Tian Wei of CCTV News, Any society that fails to harness the energy and creativity of its women is at a huge disadvantage in the modern world. While NCJW cannot and will not endorse specific candidates because of our non-profit status, we can recognize the fact that women candidates and voters are very enthusiastic about changing our political landscape and nature of discourse in this country. We are catching up and it will benefit us all in our free, democratic society. Welcome Presidential Board Appointees Thanks to the outstanding work of the 2018 NCJW Nominating Committee, chaired by June Leopold, NCJW, GNO has a solid cadre of professionals who will lead our organization in the near future. These elected Board Officers are listed on the back page of the Bulletin. NCJW President has been able to invite several more women to head up special NCJW efforts. We welcome the 2018 Presidential Board Appointments and look forward to their success this year. She really made her mark on our community sharing her knowledge and commitment to the values of our great organization, Kaplinsky said. This is a visit by national we will not soon forget! Kahn is a lifelong resident of New York City, a lawyer by training and a prolific volunteer activist. Kahn moved to the board s leading role after serving as vice president for three years. She has been deeply engaged in improving the organization s financial systems and increasing membership engagement, as well as advocating for the issues the organization pioneers. Page 2 NCJW

3 House Bill 265 Legislation which restores voting rights to incarcerated citizens in Louisiana was signed into law and will become effective March Under the leadership of NCJW Advocacy Chair Judge Miriam Waltzer, with the support of NCJW State Policy Advocate Maddie Fireman and working in concert with members of NCJW and other individuals and organizations, potentially many thousands of Louisiana people will join the voter rolls. This victory is a demonstration of what can happen when we educate, engage and mobilize constituents to contact our senators and representatives. Moving the Ball Forward NCJW is reviving the Moving the Ball Forward event series through a new and innovative partnership with the Independent Women s Organization. The Advocacy Committees of both organizations will work together to find topics of interest and priority to both organizations and will offer informative programming around those topics. As always, Moving the Ball Forward will be a fun way to commune with your NCJW sisters and meet new members of the New Orleans community. So come enjoy a glass of wine and learn a thing or two! Stay tuned for the official dates to come! HANNAH G. SOLOMON AWARD CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Again demonstrating her ability to build successful projects from the beginning stages, Susan was president of the Louisiana Nature and Science Center when it opened, and was active on the board for 10 years. She founded the Louisiana Association of Film and Video Professionals and was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Louisiana Film Commission. Susan was one of the original board members of the National D-Day Museum and the creator and first chair of its Victory Ball. As co-chair of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans Annual Campaign, she, together with two of her mentors, Joan Berenson and Jane Buchsbaum, spearheaded Operation Moses, enabling the emigration of thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. BRAVA to Susan Hess! A visionary and driving force, Susan Hess sees a need and develops a plan to make positive and impactful changes in our community. Her ability to inspire others to share her commitment and passion is incomparable and always leads to magnificent results. BRAVA to Susan Hess for her insatiable desire and ability to enrich so many lives with each public project she touches. Ina Davis Susan was instrumental in helping rebuild several aspects of our city following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Always an innovator, she joined other women of the community following the storm to form Women of the Storm, to help restore and reimagine New Orleans. Having joined the City Park Commission two years prior, and therefore keenly aware of the tremendous devastation wreaked by the storm, Susan helped oversee the park s magnificent restoration and still speaks proudly of the 300-year-old oak trees thriving there. Her devotion to the park continued and in 2014 Susan became president of the City Park Board. Susan has also served as chair of the SPCA Board and president of the SPCA Foundation. She was instrumental in the development of its business model, and in aiding in the relocation of animals after Hurricane Katrina. Susan s kind heart is perhaps best evidenced by her role as a devoted foster parent to elderly dogs from the SPCA, knowing that these animals are the most difficult to place in loving homes. Susan has been a role model for me always. A measure of a person s character is not when she does well in good times, but when she rises above the occasion in really tough times as well. I have seen Susan do both with grace, strength, intelligence and humor. And in addition to all that, she s also a whole lot of fun! Vivian Cahn Most recently, Susan has served as an officer or board member for NCJW GNO, Jewish Endowment Foundation, Tulane Hillel, Temple Sinai, the Trust for Public Land, the National Urban League, Girl Scouts of America and the Longue Vue Foundation. As dedicated as Susan and her husband, Bill, are to their vast array of volunteer projects, family always remains a priority. Weekly Shabbat dinners, a tradition with their own children, have now grown to include grandchildren. Susan has been a member of NCJW since she moved to New Orleans in 1965, and credits the organization with underpinning her viewpoint and helping her discover the kind of work she wanted to do. She says, NCJW has enriched my life. Everything I chose to do was consistent with the values of NCJW. She is also appreciative of the friends, the chavera, she has found through NCJW. These women are also most appreciative of her! To watch a woman who has been a friend and then, blessedly, seeing her become a member of the family, bringing support and enthusiasm to two more generations, while using her Masters in Business and her energy and intellect to emerge as a community leader, is an outcome to celebrate. She keeps a clear head while maintaining a sense of what matters: she can walk five large dogs, control six rambunctious grandchildren, and have 20 people to an elegant and prayerful Shabbat dinner, all in one day. This is the caliber of energy and the purposefulness of values that makes her a splendid choice for this year s Hannah Solomon Award. Susan Kierr The Hannah G. Solomon Award Luncheon will be held Oct. 15 at the New Orleans Marriott, 555 Canal Street. The cash bar opens at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon. 4 NCJW, GNO Leads Voter Registration Coalition Volunteers Organize to Rock the Vote Ina Davis Co-Chair of Voter Mobilization, Sylvia Finger, and LWV President Rosalind Cook Coalition Partner Prospects listen to NCJW Advocacy Chair Judge Miriam Waltzer The National Council of Jewish Women, Greater New Orleans Section (NCJW, GNO) and the League of Women Voters (LWV) have organized a voter registration, education and turnout coalition - - Engaging New Voices and Voters. The effort will initially be focused around National Voter Registration Week Sept More than 20 nonpartisan organizations gathered together on July 25 at the Marseilles Condominiums to coordinate efforts with the goal of bringing out the vote for the midterm elections. These organizations include American Association of University Women (AAUWNO), Avodah, C est La Vote, Hadassah, Indivisibles, JNOLA, League of Women Voters, New Orleans Coalition, National Organization of Women (NOW), New Orleans Women, Living Our Values Everyday, Touro Synagogue, the Alliance for Good Government and the Urban League. More organizations are joining every day. The Honorable Miriam Waltzer and Sylvia Finger, NCJW Voter Mobilization Voter Mobilization Co-Chair Sylvia Finger, Tana Velen of JNOLA, NCJW SPA Maddie Fireman, and NCJW President co-chairs, have been actively recruiting, training and placing volunteer voter registrants at numerous sites throughout the greater New Orleans area. NCJW is very close to its goal of registering 1,000 new voters by the October 9th deadline. Contact Sylvia Finger isfinger@cox.net or call if you are interested in participating during National Voter Registration Week. Our vote is our voice Efforts to exclude individuals from the electoral process lie at the heart of the effort to increase civic engagement in the United States. Buoyed by the US Supreme Court s 2013 Shelby v. Holder decision, which gutted the landmark 1965 Voting Rights Act, lawmakers in states around the country have passed dozens of laws to make it more difficult for people including people of color, women, individuals with disabilities and LGBTQ individuals to vote. The result? It has been increasingly difficult for communities to elect diverse officials who represent their values and have their best interests at heart. In response, NCJW is working to pass legislation to modernize our election systems and make it easier to register and cast a ballot. But civic engagement is more encompassing than just voting. It means understanding the issues at stake and encouraging every person to contribute to the political process. Throughout its history, NCJW has worked to expand voting rights, drive voter turnout, educate on the issues and engage advocates. Our work continues today, with a renewed focus on developing grassroots networks and leaders to build power in their communities. Our ultimate goal? That every eligible voter be able to register to vote, cast a ballot and engage in all levels of government in a deep and meaningful way. - civic-engagement/ NCJW Voter Mobilization Volunteers join with others to register voters at Job Corps. 60.2% of eligible voters cast a ballot in November Page 4 NCJW

We ll enjoy some snacks, network with other members and learn about NCJW s voter education efforts. NCJW Supports Unanimous Jury Amendment On the November ballot is an amendment that requires a unanimous verdict. This ballot question is non-partisan, and is supported by politicians on both sides of the aisle, as well as organizations such as Family Forum, Forum for the American Way, our partners at Voice of the Experienced and many others. We should support it as well. This is an opportunity for Louisiana to right an injustice in its legal system. The La. Constitutional Convention 1898 delegates passed a series of measures specifically designed to perpetuate the supremacy of the Anglo Saxon race. It was specifically directed to black enfranchised jurors, who, when jury deliberations began, did not get voice. So long as 10 whites voted guilty it did not matter what these two black jurors said. Prosecutors need persuade only 10 out of 12 jurors to send a defendant away for life. This means a state justice system without participation of African Americans. The provision allowed a split verdict 10/2 in felony cases. When the constitutional amendment was debated, the entire historical reason was brought before the Legislature. Louisiana is one of two states the other is Oregon where this is allowed. An amendment on the November ballot would require a unanimous verdict. This ballot question is not partisan and is supported by politicians on all sides, as well as organizations such as Family Forum and Forum for the American Way. We should support it also. NCJW Way-Learning to Lead: Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust Sponsorship Renewed Philanthropist Oscar J. Tolmas NCJW Greater New Orleans Section is pleased to announce that the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust has renewed its sponsorship of the NCJW Way - Learning to Lead program for This significant grant will be used to train new leaders for NCJW and our community through a multi-prong educational program that will culminate in the leadership participants developing a new program. In addition, the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust will provide funding for one scholarship recipient each year for three years through our ongoing scholarship program. This recipient will be named the Oscar J. Tolmas Scholar. Thank you to trustees Vince Giardina and Lisa Romano for their continued generous support of NCJW as they honor the memory of Oscar J. Eleven New Orleans board members gained skills, resources and connections to the NCJW network to be better able to deliver on its mission both locally and nationally. (Left) NCJW Advocacy Chair Judge Miriam Waltzer and NCJW State Policy Advocate Maddie Fireman shared the story of how New Orleans advanced Act 265 which restored voting rights to incarcerated citizens in Louisiana. Announcing the Cohort of NCJW Way By Co-Chairs Dana Keren and Gail Naron Chalew Sponsored by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust, the NCJW Way Program is designed to inspire and inform future leaders of NCJW using a three-pronged approach of education, service and leadership training. This year, the cohort is expanding to include seven outstanding young women. In the first year, they will learn about community needs from local and national leaders over dinner at the homes of NCJW members. They will also gain advocacy and non-profit management skills in these seminars and through participating in the NCJW 2019 Washington Conference. In the second year, they will put this knowledge and skills into action through a service project that they design and implement. The seven members of the 2018 Way cohort are: Marlena Fireman, recent Avodah graduate and program coordinator for HousingNOLA Jessica Frankel, student pursuing a master s of social work degree, who has previously worked in nonprofits and political campaigns Nicole Harvey, public relations professional who runs both her own full-service marketing company and a startup online retail company Kelsey Jannerson, student pursuing a master s in disaster resilience leadership who has worked in education and studied in Israel Marni Karlin, expert in organic and sustainable agriculture Kayla Kaufman, senior marketing associate who manages content across social media platforms Allyson Al Page, lawyer who co-founded a local nonprofit immigration law center We look forward to an exciting year of learning and doing and the enrichment these young women will bring to the process. Ochsner Israeli Patient Caregiver Assistance Fund One of NCJW s newer community services is the Ochsner Israeli Patient Caregiver Assistance Fund. This important program supports Israeli organ transfer patients and their family members/ caregivers while they are temporarily living in New Orleans. The program provides financial and supportive assistance. Two caring volunteers, Lis Kahn and Sandy Raisen, who serve as co-chairs of this community service, have been very busy with this project. They have delivered numerous Welcome Baskets to transplant patients and their families. What s really special is that Lis visited these same patients once they returned to Israel. Bless you, Lis and Sandy, for your compassionate work through NCJW! Call if you d like to help. Page 6 NCJW
