Module Title: Field Trip to Ireland and Study Methods Dr Clare Downham This module introduces students to research methodologies for the study of archaeology, history, literature, society and politics focusing on Dublin as a case study. These methods have widespread application within Irish Studies and beyond. The fieldtrip offers an enjoyable and rewarding opportunity for students to experience Ireland in a stimulating group environment. The skills developed in the module will be of benefit in many areas of employment and in continuing undergraduate study. Assessment consists of an essay on an area of the student s interest relating to Dublin and a ten minute presentation based on the fieldtrip experience. IRIS102 Critical thinking; global citizenship; group work Two 85% Coursework; % Presentation The field trip is a really good way to learn more about Ireland

English Literature in Ireland: Jonathan Swift to WB Yeats Dr Lauren Arrington Ireland has one of the strongest traditions of great English literature in the world, and this module is designed to give you a taste of several of those great writers, such as Jonathan Swift, Maria Edgeworth, J.M. Synge and W.B. Yeats. We look at the strained historical relationship between Britain and Ireland from the eighteenth century into the early decades of the twentieth and ask why it is that Ireland has taken such a prominent place in the development of literature in the English language. IRIS103 Textual analysis; academic writing; construction of arguments One 100% Exam ' I found the content really interesting ; Engaging content ; Thorough and accessible

English Literature in Ireland from James Joyce to Seamus Heaney Professor Frank Shovlin Ireland has one of the strongest traditions of great English literature in the world, and this module is designed to give you a taste of several of those great writers, such as James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, Elizabeth Bowen and Seamus Heaney. We look at the emergence of an independent Ireland after 1921 and consider why it is that a small island nation managed to produce four Novel laureates in literature over the course of the twentieth century. IRIS104 Textual analysis; academic writing; construction of arguments Two 100% Exam ' "Fantastic to get a sense of a powerful literary tradition both closely tied to the British scene but also different in many ways."

From Civil Rights to Armalites: background to the troubles in Northern Ireland Dr Kevin Bean This module enables students to understand the historical background to the development of the Troubles in Northern Ireland with reference to the underlying political, social, economic, cultural and religious context. The main events and underlying causes of the outbreak of violent conflict in the late 1960s is examined as are the motives of the main participating elements including the Northern Ireland and British governments, extra-parliamentary and political movements. Students are encouraged to engage in a systematic study of the main primary and secondary texts to introduce the main elements in the debate around modernisation and the 'causes' of the Troubles. IRIS107 Commercial awareness; critical thinking; group work One 65% Exam; 25% Essay; 10% Presentation "Provided a fascinating insight into the lead up to the modern Troubles in Northern Ireland. A brilliant overview of a complex history."

Warriors, Witches and Legends: the origins of Ireland Dr Clare Downham The course provides an overview of Irish culture and society from prehistory to the end of the Middle Ages. This long time span witnessed radical change, including the arrival of Christianity, invasions of Vikings, Normans, and the Reformation. These events shaped Irish identities and contributed to longer term developments in Irish history. The module is interdisciplinary and uses the methods of history, literature, archaeology and art history to uncover the past. Through close analysis of primary sources we explore past mental worlds of the past to interpret motivations, actions and ideals. This course outlines the origins of Ireland and Irishness with reflection on the impact of the past on the landscape and people of Ireland today. IRIS109 Critical thinking; oral and written communication skills One 90% Coursework; 10% Presentation "I found the module really interesting and engaging really enjoyed the lectures"

Ireland s Battle for Ideas Dr Maria Power (M.C.Power@liverpool.ac.uk) This module aims to explore the various ideas that have contributed to the development of modern Ireland. It will explain how these ideas have interacted with one another and how they have shaped political debates and brought about social change. Issues such as Nationalism, Unionism, Socialism and Feminism are examined from week to week to build up to a strong sense of how Ireland has emerged as a successful and cosmopolitan national that enthusiastically embraces its position in Europe. IRIS114 Critical thinking; time management; global citizenship Two 100% Coursework "Really enjoyed this insight into a country I ve long been interested in but really knew little about."
