1 1 ST QUARTER Civil War and Reconstruction Explain the strategy of the north and south at WEEK 1 3 OBJECTIVE the beginning of the war. Describe the major battles and strategies used during the Civil War Explain why the south was able to have success at the beginning of the war. Explain the effects that the Emancipation Proclamation had on the war. Explain how Gettysburg became a turning point for the north. Explain how Ulysses S. Grant became the most successful general in the north. Explain the effects of General William Techumseh Sherman s march to the sea. Explain the effects of General William Techumseh Sherman s march to the sea. Students will be give clicker quizzes at the end of lessons. Students will complete a chart comparing and contrasting the North and South s reasons for fighting the Civil War. Students will complete a CEI paragraph describing their opinion on the South s Secession. of the unit to check for understanding. or Civil War WEEK 4-6 OBJECTIVE Explain how Reconstruction ended, and compare/contrast the New and the Old South. Explain Lincoln s plan for reconstruction. Explain the role Lincoln s assassination played in reconstruction. Understand the three different groups of republicans that developed in the reconstruction period. Explain President Andrew Johnson s plan for reconstruction. Explain how the Radical Republicans were able to take control of Reconstruction. Understand the role Johnson s impeachment played in Reconstruction. Understand the hardships that African Americans faced after the war. Students will pair up and come up with their own plan of how the Union should be reconstructed. Students will be given clicker quizzes at the end of lessons. Students will fill out an alphabet chart with events from the chapter. of the unit to check for understanding Civil War Explain why the presidency of Grant is considered unsuccessful. Understand how the election of President Hayes caused Reconstruction in the south to collapse.

3 2nd QUARTER Immigration and Urbanization WEEK 1 2 OBJECTIVES Analyze how the great wave of immigration after the Civil war and how nativism affected immigration policies Understand why floods of immigrants moved into the U.S. in the late 1800 s Explain what caused racism to become a major factor in the late 1800 s Understand how different classes lived during the late 1800 s Explain the different cultural ideas that arose in the late 1800 s. Students will be given clicker quizzes over different sections. Students will be asked to label and color a map of which countries large numbers of immigrants came to the United States. or WEEK 3-6 OBJECTIVES Discuss and describe the clash of values in the 1920's and the changing status of women and African Americans. Discuss and evaluate the rise and legacy of the Progressive Movement Explain how a clash of traditional and modern values shook the U.S. In the 1920s. Explain how WWI allowed women to start to explore other options than just a stay at home mom. Explain the changes that took place in the African American culture during the Harlem Renaissance. Discuss the rise of the progressive movement. Describe various efforts to regulate concentrated corporate power. Explain how Theodore Roosevelt helped William Taft get elected. Describe Wilson's economic and social reforms. Students will compare and contrast women s roles of the 1920 to the present. Students will fill out a top 10 list of the events that occurred in the chapter. Students will play review Jeopardy over the chapter.

4 WEEK 7 OBJECTIVE Explain how big business came to dominate American economy WEEK 8-9 OBJECTIVES Analyze the events leading up to WWI Analyze the events of WWI Explain how abundant natural resources, and minimal government restraint, lead to the growth of the American economy. Understand how the growth of the railroad helped spur the American economy. Explain how Big Business, became an important part of American society. Explain how poor working conditions and low wages lead to the development of strikes and unions in the American job industry. Explain the causes of WWI and why the U.S. Entered the war. Analyze how the United States raised an army and gained support for WWI. Discuss fighting techniques used in WWI. Discuss the effects of the postwar recession in the U.S. Discuss how WWI affected the United States role on the world stage. Students will be given clicker quizzes over chapter sections. Students will write a CEI paragraph on how and why you might organize a union. Students will be placed in groups and asked to role play Unions Vs Owners. Students will make a timeline of events that lead to WWI. Students will make a political cartoon showing their understanding of the events that lead to WWI. or : PowerPoint over the events that lead up to WWI

5 3rd QUARTER Post World War 1 WEEK 1-2 OBJECTIVE Discuss and describe the American policy of Isolationism. OBJECTIVE Analyze how the growing importance of the automobile and other industries improved the U.S. standard of living. Explain how Americans views on Isolation came about after WWI Compare and Contrast America s world role after WWI and the present Explain the task of bringing America out of isolationism that FDR faced Why was it significant to Hitler's rise that the U.S was in isolation? Analyze major industries that developed in the 1920 s that spurred many American industries Analyze how the rise of the automobile lead to the rise of suburbs Students will be given clicker quizzes over sections in the chapter. Students will do a CR question showing their views on isolation. Students will do a t- chart comparing and contrasting the pros and cons of isolationism. of the chapter to check for understanding. or WEEK 3-5 OBJECTIVES Explain the events that helped lead to the Great Depression. Analyze how the Great Depression affected American families Analyze the importance of the Assembly line in modernizing America Analyze Henry Ford's technique for maximizing sales of the Model T Analyze how the economic theories of the 1920's helped lead to the Great Depression. Explain how the Bull Market, and buying on credit, helped strengthen the depression. Analyze why farmers didn't share in the prosperity of the 1920s. Analyze the evolution of Hooverville's and Hobo's. Students will be paired up and come up with a well thought out plan to deal with all the major aspects of the depression. Students will be given clicker quizzes over the chapter sections.

Discuss Russia's attempts to Democratize after the fall of Communism. Analyze how the race between Russia and America lead to much aid for upstart countries.
