5 -The GLF was Mao s attempt to modernize China. They needed to catch up with the rest of the world. While it seemed like it was working at first, it resulted in millions of people dying.

7 - It moved China s government away from the dynasty (monarchy) system that was thousands of years old. Eventually, this fell into civil war between the communists and the capitalists. The communists came to power and they still control China today.

13 -Both nations used nationalism as the main cause for their fight for independence. India was controlled by the British Empire (UK) and Vietnam was controlled by the French Empire. Nationalism led to the rise of freedom fighters like Gandhi and Ho Chi Minh.
14 7. DESCRIBE THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION AND ITS EFFECTS
15 -Mao was losing power over the communist party and China overall. He started the Cultural Revolution to help grow support for himself and eliminate his enemies. It resulted in thousands of young people starting the People s Liberation Army which killed hundreds of thousands of doctors, lawyers, teachers, etc.

17 -The fear of the Domino Theory was the United States main reason for entering the Vietnam Conflict. We were afraid that if one country fell to communism then all the country s around them would begin to fall to communism (like dominos).
18 9. DESCRIBE THE EVENTS AT TIANANMEN SQUARE AND EXPLAIN HOW IT IMPACTED THE PEOPLE OF CHINA.
19 -The Tiananmen Square Protest started as a huge group of college students mourning for a pro-democracy professor that had passed away. They turned the funeral into a protest, asking the government for democracy. However the government attacked the students, firing weapons and bringing in tanks. These attacks killed thousands, but eventually helped bring democracy. (Think of it like the Boston Tea Party for China)

21 -Gandhi was the pro-nationalist leader of India s Independence movement. He was important because he showed that you could have results through peace and non-violent protest. He greatly influenced many people around the world, including Martin Luther King, Jr.
22 11. WHY DID THE UNITED STATES SEND ARMED FORCES TO SUPPORT SOUTH VIETNAM DURING THE 1960S AND EARLY 1970S?
23 -Because we were trying to contain communism and stop the Domino Theory. We were supporting the democratic, capitalist South Vietnam and opposing the communism North Vietnam

31 -Vietnam was engaged in war over almost 40 years (French, Americans, and Civil War), but India achieved independence through with non-violence.

33 -It is the world s largest democracy in population. They have a representative body (like US Congress), a Prime Minister (like the US President), and a Supreme Court (like us).
34 17. DEFINE SPECIALIZATION AND PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE IN SE ASIA
35 Specialization is the process a country learns about what they can make the best. America is most specialized to make things like airplanes and medicine because our citizens are very well educated and can learn the specialized skills for that. Currently, in China and Vietnam they are most specialized for producing goods like shoes, plastics, and home goods. Japan specializes in making electronics and high tech equipment.
