2 PAGE 2 NO HOLDS BARRED ON 43 After making the move to the other side of the Tracks where 20 of our First Friday nomads enjoyed a great night and raised just over $ 200 for the local food pantries, it was decided to cross the Queens Boulevard line once again back to what is becoming a steady rest stop on this ongoing journey. At bar 43 the Crew will rest their bottoms and raise a glass once more for a good cause, the battle against food insecurity (and of course socialize a little as well). You can join in the fun as well on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at the aforementioned Bar 43 located at rd Street here in Sunnyside, Queens. Make a new friend, have a change of scenery, and/or bring your best buddy with you. Either way you ll be glad you did! The Sunnyside Kiwanis First Friday Social Mixers are a monthly meet and greet event held to foster community togetherness, create stronger social bonds between our neighbors and civic groups and most importantly to raise funds to assist our local food pantries in the mission to curb food insecurity. Help us to help others while enjoying a great time yourself. Cadiz A never ending flow of visitors flock to New York City every day because they know that there is a wealth of treasure available in the vast number of cultural institutions that can be found here. Residents of this great city can also unlock this valuable treasure thanks to a wonderful collaborative initiative called the Culture Pass program. Although it was announced months ago, I am reminding those who have not yet cashed in on this great deal offered through the Queens; Brooklyn and New York libraries. I have written about the public libraries for many years and referred to them as the best buy in town. Now that bargain has gotten even better allowing library card holders to access and explore such places as the Rubin; Whitney; Guggenheim; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Brooklyn Botanic Gar- den; International Center of Photography and the Jewish Museum to name a few of the 40 destinations accepting the Culture Pass for free tickets or passes. Anyone over 13 can get involved to gain access by visiting the CulturePass.nyc site and using a library card to look up places of interest. Local points of interest in Queens include the Queens Museum; Louis Armstrong House; the Queens Historical Society; MOMA P.S. 1; and the Queens Central Library which features, among other things, concerts through a series called Culture Connection. The Fall and Winter afford the perfect opportunity to go exploring. Don t pass up on this sterling opportunity to do what I talk about in my book Traveling Directions, where I invite the reader to Be A Tourst, seeing your city; borough or community anew, with fresh eyes. Thank you to New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) for our continued partnership in providing free legal services to those who need it. We are on Steinway and 35th Avenue by PC Richards in Astoria. 4 PAGE 4 OPEN SPACE VICTORY On Wednesday, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer secured a significant win for the Court Square community with the approval of a deal to convert land under the Queensboro Bridge, ramps into open public space as part of a new development project at Jackson Avenue and Dutch Kills Street. Along with the deal, the City has committed to allocate funding for a brand new UPK-5th grade elementary school in Court Square. The developer for the project has signed an agreement with SEIU Local 32BJ to ensure all building service workers hired are unionized and guaranteed good wages and benefits. This deal is a victory for the community that has advocated for years to convert the land under the Queensboro Bridge ramps into public open space. The deal includes fully funding the design and build out of the public space. $5.5 million to complete the redesign has been secured. The City has committed to work with the Long Island City Business Improvement District as a community partner to administer the design, development, and maintenance of the site. An advisory board will also be created with the Court Square Civic Association and other local stakeholders guaranteed a seat on the board guiding the project. SMALL JOBS On Wednesday, October 17th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined his NYC Council colleagues on the steps of City Hall to support the Small Business Jobs Survival Act. The unique character and diversity of New York City s small businesses is what makes this city what it is, said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. We must protect our city s small businesses from being driven away by exorbitant rent increases and taken over by large corporate chains. Our city has long been a beacon of economic opportunity for immigrants and local mom-and-pop shops and the Council must do all that we can do to keep it that way. SPEEDBUMPS On Friday, October 19th, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer joined longtime resident Terry Murphy to celebrate the reinstallation of speed bumps and the restoration of sidewalks and curbs that were damaged during last year s sewer construction on 50th Street between 39th and Skillman Avenues. CULTURE On Tuesday, October 23rd, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, local officials and artists celebrated the largest-ever City allocation for culture with a total DCLA expense budget of $198.4 million and nearly $200 million in capital funding to support more than 1,000 organizations citywide. As the Chair of the Committee on Cultural Affairs and Libraries, I fight every day for the thousands of artists and cultural groups that form the heart and soul of our city, said Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. In this year s budget, I m proud to have led the effort to allocate a record $198.4 million to the DCLA, nearly $200 million in capital funding and $43.9 million in grants to empower hundreds of outstanding cultural organizations to expand their programming. This dramatically increased funding will benefit millions of New Yorkers and directly work to increase the diversity and accessibility of arts and culture across all five boroughs.

5 PAGE 5 Signs brought by the kids were a mix of signs and slogans they d made themselves and those brought from other marches, and often articulated values rather than political positions. For example, the largest sign brought to the march was made on brown craft paper and simply spelled out Compassion in big bubble letters. Other signs included Kids helping kids, Help the animals, and the adorable, More Choo Choos. Later, Asha MacKay a teen from Hallie s Angels reinforced these values by reading a journal entry written by Hallie Geier about kid superheroes who change the world by helping others. While chants such as We are unstoppable, A better world is possible! imbued a feeling of empowerment and energized the crowd, teens did the work of fusing values with recent history at the rally preceding the march. Ellis Rubin, a teen star best known for his role as Young Barnum in The Greatest Showman and MC for the day began the event by imploring people to vote, a sentiment followed up by New York City Youth Poet Laureate William Lohier. Lohier then read a poem that described how complacency and racism allowed the murder of innocent African Americans at the hands of police officers Sean Bell is shot in Queens Eric Garner is choked to death in Queens. And yet on election day 2017 only 1 in 5 people voted, the young poet stressed. Mirroring many town halls in Queens, teens also voiced their concerns about immigration. Saima Anjum, a muslim immigrant from Bangladesh, delivered a passionate speech about how she wants to proudly share her heritage and invited other immigrant children to do the same. Your perspective and ideas as an immigrant can change the world! she said. Meanwhile, Immigrant Families Together brought a teen Guatemalan immigrant named Yordy who, with the help of a translator told the story of how he d been separated from his parents at the border. His courage to speak earned him the praise of city councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who applauded the bravery of all the kids who came out to the march to speak. Van Bramer s words marked a triumphant end to the rally, which broke into a dance party and then a march in which kids and their families walked up up Skillman avenue, looped around to 43rd Ave. at 48th St. and then headed back to Lou Lodati. The chant When I say young, you say mighty! Young! Mighty! Young! Mighty! rang through the streets like the call of the triumphant.

7 PAGE 7 5 TH ANNIVERSARY OF CULTURE CONNECTION During October the Queens Central Library celebrated the 5 th Anniversary of Culture Connection. This celebration of music and diversity brought together two musical talents to perform for a packed house in the library s auditorium. Cuban composer, pianist and bandleader Dayramir Gonzalez and the accomplished stage and film performer Alton Fitzgerald White were the featured musical artists featured for the occasion. The Grand Concourse is the lastest album by Dayramir Gonzalez; and My Pride: Mastering Life s Daily Performance by Alton Fitzgerald White is a stunning memoir of an artist who performed the lead role of Mufasa in Lion King 4,308 times. Both gave brilliant performances of their artistry. The Culture Connection is presented to the public free of change and represents yet another wonderful example of the rich and diverse cultural scene in Queens. Go online at queenslibrary.org to find out more about the array of free concerts and presentations. COMMUNITY DONATES TO HURRICANE FLORENCE VICTIMS On Wednesday, October 17, UPS picked up 11 boxes of supplies collected by State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. s three district offices, which were shipped out to North Carolina to help State Senator Bill Rabon and his constituents recover from Hurricane Florence. Our local communities really came through to help out those in need after Hurricane Florence ravaged parts of North Carolina, Addabbo said. It was inspiring to see so many of my constituents drop off supplies. It was great that we were able to pay forward the help that we received from all over after we were hit by Superstorm Sandy. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Department of Financial Services at or visit the Department s website at FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to save your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services.
