Bill deblasio, Mayor City Hall New York, NY RE: th Drive latest tallest building I read with great concern and interest the recent report that there will be a new 67 story tower constructed at the above address. This is another illustration of the inadequacy of the current zoning in Long Island City. I have written numerous letters opposing such large towers and asked for changes in zoning. I understand that the LIC Core Neighborhood Planning Study is again on hold, while we see new tower after tower being proposed and built in LIC as of right. Worse, the City has recently embarked on various efforts to increase the size and volume of buildings further by trading City owned land or air rights to further boost size and height. The proposal which was voted down by Community Board Two at and Jackson Avenue is the latest example. LIC is facing an emergency situation. Therefore I ask for a moratorium on any new Buildings Department permits for new construction in Long Island City until the city can present a plan for properly increasing the infrastructure. 3 PAGE 3 WE DON T WANNA BE YOUR HIGHWAY Op Ed by Patricia Dorfman Mayor Bill de Blasio ignored the vote of Community Board 2, 27-to-8 opposed, our Congressman, Assemblywoman and Councilman, and the united voice of 12,000 people in the plan corridor made up of every church, every business, every school, and most residents announcing on July 12 a plan go-ahead this summer, in the form of a social media tweet, for the DOT plan for Woodside and Sunnyside s Skillman and 43rd Avenues in Woodside and Sunnyside to remove 116 parking spaces, narrow and remove lanes, and install protected bike lanes as part of the DOT desired 7+ mile bike highway from Forest Hills to Midtown. There has yet to be a formal notice to all residents, such as furnished in advance by mail by East Side Access managers. Some residents still do not know the city intends to reconfigure the avenues. Informing the populace on Twitter was a blow. Word spread like a death in the family. Farther east in Queens, an area with less mass transit, and firsthand reports of business closings, community boards and/or councilmembers also ignored, moved many in Sunnyside and Woodside to despair. Due to the strong feelings in the community, with formal requests to meet directly with the mayor unanswered, trust has broken down. This guy doesn t care about Queens, said an elected official. Two lives lost and the figure of 300 injuries the mayor cited as the reason for the change, but no time frame, or comparison with other areas or the city, was as befuddling as some of the statistical charts in the proposal itself. / skillman-ave-43rd-ave-june2018.pdf Transportation Alternatives pro-bike, anti-car, protected bicycle lane lobbyists and volunteers, largely from outside the corridor, have waged a determined and sophisticated battle in support of the protected bike lanes: attending every public meeting, gathering signatures, posting on social media and news sites both anonymously and by name. Approaches range from understandable pleading for safety, to hyperbole, accusing those opposed of choosing your parking over our lives. Their remarks after the Mayor s July 12 tweet were ranged from quietly appreciative, to gloating and triumphant. There is an element of zealotry in some, a sense of moral superiority, with one casting their cause as a social justice, with a chart of earnings by car owners vs. earnings of bike owners. A few evinced a disdain towards those who explain why they need a car to operate in daily life. Some of those opposed were also disdainful and unabashedly appear to hate bike riders. The general tone up until the moment of the mayor s tweet was fearful, resigned, and angry that an already essential and scarce resource was being removed for what many perceived as extremist purposes. Many now sense that the ultimate goal was not safety, but to make private car ownership so difficult that it would drastically reduce over time. And there is a suspicion that, as other cities have announced, there being intention long term to making public street parking a thing of the past. The organized local opponents, the group QueensStreetsforAll.org (of which I am a volunteer Exec. Director) continue the battle.* The DOT did make a series of changes to their proposal, in response to the community, bringing the parking loss figure down from 158 spaces to 116. But after the mayor s announcement, the sentiment of many was stunned rage, and a sense of being unheard, of a loss of democracy, and betrayal due to there being no one to turn to in a local crisis coming from the same people one would turn to for help. And the administration has not set an example to as a first step. The city has more cars than ever in history, 10% more than when the mayor took office. When Bloomberg maneuvered a smoking ban on the city, he did not have a two-pack-a-day habit. Mayor de Blasio has made no offer for himself or his commissioners to start taking a bicycle or mass transit, say, once a week. Our councilmember is furnished a car, parked on the street. The presumed long-term progressive agenda of cleaner air and climate change mitigation are apparently a sacrifice for us alone, the people of the city they say they serve. There is a need for protected bike lanes, and despite the confusing data that might mean accidents have moved, rather than decreased, most who ride would feel safer cycling in a protected bike lane. The safety gains of traffic slowing could be done with staggered lights, signals, speed signs, speed cameras protected lanes can be installed without a loss of parking. So there is a perception of unsaid objectives. If the long-term goal is to reduce car ownership, better to say that and start asking for sacrifices across the board. If the goal is to increase bike use by building the bike highway best to say that, too, and why, instead of masking in a safety crisis that isn t compelling. Most perceive that figures of bike use are exaggerated because the plan is to increase bike use by building the bike highway, not manage current riders; transparency there would be most helpful of all. Bicycle use has increased in the city, and every cyclist on the road is doing all a favor by not being on inadequate mass transit. Bikes as vehicles are cleaner, cheaper, probably healthier, and more and safer street space is needed for riders. But not all streets need the lanes. It is unreasonable in protecting our cyclists to suddenly deprive the majority of people in the corridor with a needed resource. What would go a long way to restore a sense of fairness and democracy is for the mayor to meet directly with the members of the community, including local first responders, who say lives may be endangered, and go through the proposal slowly and carefully. Explain why the much more dangerous Northern Blvd. was not considered. The proposal s demarcations are confusing and if the first days are not to be dangerous, education is needed. The most common complaint one hears from both sides is the lawlessness. Enforcement of the rules of the road is essential. There is an uncertain feeling in the air for many in Queens that the city s fall to overdevelopment has extended the land grab of Queens to the streets top down or outside-wrought changes which benefit others but not good for Queens. Are we, as Robert Moses treated some residents, so many game pieces to flick off the board? 5 PAGE 5 PACKED HOUSE! by Patricia Dorfman BLVD III, the third year of the Boulevard Film Festival originated by Founders/ Programmers Matt Carlson and Amanda Barker-Carlson and helped to fruition by Sunnyside Artists and Thalia Spanish Theatre and took off like Speedy Gonzales this year last Friday night at Thalia Spanish Theatre and did not stop till the end of the Closing Party at the elegant new wing at Sanger Hall on Sunday Night. The festival does not charge filmmakers to enter, and makes no profit. All help is volunteer.the first year of the festival, about 90 films were submitted, the next year about 800, and this year the pair viewed 1300 short films to curate the four different sessions, Comedy, Drama, Documentary, all at Thalia, and Midnight Mischief, at Sanger Hall. Winners get cash prizes and are selected in blind ballot by the audience. The Baby by A. M. Fine, was well-acted and won in the Comedy Division, about a young father, whose son appears to him as a goofy, balding adult he is supposed to cherish. Carlos Freire of Jackson Heights, touched audience last year with his Terraza 7, submitted My Dream at the Other Side, about a Mexican immigrant who builds by hand his dream home brick by brick in Mexico with earnings from the US, but his young son does not want to leave because he has greater opportunities as a citizen born here, than his sister, who is not. But Freire was edged out by rapper James Gantt s Silver Arm Nina. The auteur as himself explains why he wears the bangles of his charismatic grandmother. Gantt s mother, who also attended, shares in the film her pride in her son and the film brought some in the audience to tears. A Cycle won in the Dramatic segment, a sophisticated film by Lea Plander about two women whose relationship is marred by the cyclical out-of-control rage of one of them from which she manages to break free. Also popular in that category were Seeing Glory by Rick Hamilton about a long-term relationship where the dementia and abuse of a partner tests the deep love her partner has for Fabricio Saquicela at the Thalia controls Photographer Jules Fuentes (just hand in the photo) shoots passing children, who knew how to work the blue carpet. Midnight Mischief s winner was the deft Red Delicious by Ian Hurdle, Luke Williams and Justin Gilman, about the impossible struggles of giving in to temptation. A few films were on the shocking side, the graphic Night Live by Dazhi Huang which very interesting for its fresh style and setting in the world of international streaming. Rape from the point of view of the victim was the subject of Innocence y Miranda Jean Larson and Michael Cichetti.Interesting was the no-cast Huerve El Agua by Liena Vayzman, which she shot with an IPhone from the back of a truck, was a visual poem about death featuring bubbling mineral springs in Mexico. AS NOMINEE FOR ALLY BANK CORP. FKA GMAC BANK, its successors and/ or assigns, to secure the sum of $449, and recorded in Official Records City Register File Number , in the Office of the CLERK of the County of QUEENS on May 21, 2010, which mortgage was thereafter modified. Said mortgage was later assigned to OCWEN LOAN SERVICING by assignment of mortgage executed on September 26, 2013, covering premises known as Woodhaven Boulevard, Glendale, NY (Block 3879, Lot 25). The relief sought in the within action is a final judgment directing the sale of the premises described above to satisfy the debt described above. To the above named Defendants: The foregoing summons is served upon you by publication pursuant to an order of the Hon. Pam Jackman Brown, Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, and filed along with the supporting papers in the office of the Clerk of the County of Queens on 04/25/2018. This is an action to foreclose on a mortgage.
