2 CCSD POLICY NOTIFICATION OF SEX OFFENDERS The Board of Education acknowledges the efforts of local law enforcement to notify the district when a person with a history of sex offenses against a child is being paroled or released into the community, in accordance with the provisions of the Sex Offender Registration Act, commonly known as Megan s Law. The purpose of this notification is to protect members of the community, particularly children, by notifying them of the presence of individuals in their midst who may present a danger. Consistent with its duty to protect students under its care, the district shall cooperate with local law enforcement agencies in this endeavor. Any information provided by local law enforcement officials pursuant to Megan s Law shall be posted in an appropriate location in the Central Administration Building. In addition, any information received will be circulated to all staff who might come into contact with the offender in the course of doing their jobs, including Building Principals, instructional and non-instructional staff, security staff; bus drivers, custodians, and coaches. In addition, the Superintendent of Schools will provide notification to area directors of the public library, private schools, and nursery schools located within the district s boundaries. 3 NOTIFICATION OF SEX OFFENDERS REGULATION CCSD POLICY R The following guidelines are adopted to ensure prompt, proper and uniform dissemination of information received from local law enforcement agencies regarding certain sex offenders placed on probation, paroled, discharged to released: 1. When any Administrator receives information from the local law enforcement agency regarding sex offenders placed on probation, paroled, discharged, or released, he or she will immediately send a copy of all correspondences to the Superintendent of Schools. 2. Once the Superintendent receives the information, the Superintendent or his or her designee will immediately distribute copies of the fact sheet and the photograph to all Building Principals, Central Administration stag bus drivers, security stag and coaches. Additionally, the directors of the public library, private schools, and nursery schools will be notified. The Superintendent is responsible for posting the fact sheet and photograph on the bulletin board in the lobby of the Central Administration Building. 3. Each Building Principal shall be responsible for providing written notification to his or her staff, both instructional and non-instructional, as well as children s groups, which regularly use the school facility. 4. Each Building shall be responsible for providing a letter apprising all parents of the sex offender s presence in the community (see E.2). The letter will reference the public posting in the Central Administration Building. 5. Any district staff member, instructional or non-instructional, who believes he or she has observed a sex offender on the district s premises, shall immediately notify his or her supervisor, Principal, and/or the Superintendent of Schools. The supervisor or Principal so notified shall immediately contact the Superintendent or his/her designee who will notify the appropriate authorities. 6. The Superintendent or his or her designee shall make the notification information available upon request and shall inform parents/guardians/residents of the availability of the Parents for Megan s Law Sex Offender Alert Program at new student registration and via postings in the district calendar, newsletter and website. 7. Any district staff member, instructional or non-instructional, shall notify his or her supervisor or Principal whenever he or she sees any suspicious individual on district premises. Adoption Date: January 26, 1999 Revision Dates: November 22, 2005; March 29, 2011
4 ALL ENTITY LETTER Recent revisions to the New York State Corrections Law have expanded the availability of sex offender information. This legislation has increased the amount of information available to the public regarding registered sex offenders. Law enforcement agencies can now provide community notifications regarding Level 1 offenders, which is similar to what is allowed for Level 2 offenders. Information that now can be provided by law enforcement on both Level 1 and Level 2 offenders includes name, photograph, residence zip code, offense description and special probation or parole conditions. Level 2 sex offenders are now included in the Sex Offender Subdirectory on the Division of Criminal Justice Services public website, in addition to Level 3 offenders who have been listed in the website's Subdirectory since The exact residence addresses of Level 2 offenders and employment addresses (if available) will be listed. These revisions allow law enforcement to make community notifications on Level 1 and Level 2 offenders by zip code. Notifications on Level 3 offenders will continue to include the exact residential street address. You may access the street address of a Level 2 offender on the New York State Sex Offender Registry Website at To inquire about specific individuals, including Level 1 offenders, you may contact The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Sex Offender Registry at You must supply the offender's name, as well as another piece of identifying information such as a date of birth, address or social security number. You may also obtain information about registered offenders and Megan's Law by contacting the Megan's Law Helpline at or at
