The Mayor has threatened to close at least 20 fire companies and as many as 60 fire companies on July 1, 2010, the beginning of the new fiscal year. Fires don t care about budgets, said Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, Chair of the Fire and Criminal Justice Committee and whose district is served by Fire Engine 271. To close fire companies at a time when our fire services are responding to more fire than ever before is simply irresponsible. On March 18, 2009 while Engine 271 was closed a 3-alarm fire destroyed three homes and several neighborhood stores. A week later, March 25, 2009, firefighters from Engine 271 and Ladder 124 which was open that evening rescued residents from a burning building at 376 Palmetto Street. They had to first rip down child proof window guards blocking the windows before beginning rescue efforts. Crowley continued, We remember last year s 3-alarm fire that occurred during the night time closures of Engine 271 which destroyed three homes and several local stores. If 271 had been in operation that night, the response time would have been cut in half and many of those family s might still have their homes and businesses. While Engine 271 was on the chopping block last year, we must fight to protect it again this year. Too many lives depend on Engine 271 and to close this company or any company in this City would violate our responsibilities to our tax-paying New Yorkers. During 2009 Engine Company 271 was one of a number of neighborhood firehouses closed at night under a policy enacted by former Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta. UFA president Steve Cassidy said, New York City Firefighters have responded to more emergencies in the last five years than at any other time in the history of the FDNY. Closing firehouses, especially at the levels proposed by the mayor would make it virtually impossible to provide protections at the level New Yorkers expect. He added, New Yorkers on both sides of the Brooklyn Queens border are entitled to the best fire and emergency medical protection for their families and their property. We are here today to tell residents that in order to keep the emergency protection they have, they must join in the fight to keep their local firehouse open. Firehouse closures will mean a dramatic increase in the time it takes to get a fire truck or an ambulance to an emergency and as result, civilians and firefighters will die. City Council Member Erik Dilan said, Engine 271 carries out over 1,000 emergency operations a year, with a large bulk of these operations medical related. The Engine greatly reduces the emergency response time to ailing victims in my district. Engine closures would create a great deficit in providing safety to Bushwick s residents. It is not a viable option for my district. Council Member Diana Reyna said, Fire Engine 271 is a first responder and means the difference between a house and a block burning down. This is an example of an inadequate measure to these tough economic times; we mustn t rationalize putting the lives of our constituents in jeopardy by cutting this vital emergency service. We must act strategically to prioritize and protect the funding that allows these brave men and women of the Fire Department of New York City to continue to serve our residents with the quality and excellence they have come to expect. Assembly Member Mike Miller (D-Queens) said, I d like to thank Council Members Crowley, Dilan, and Reyna for their leadership on this. We all know that firehouses are essential. When we go to bed at night, we take for granted the assumption that our houses and apartments will still be standing in the morning. The FDNY has the training, experience, and courage to prevent tragedy. Times are tough all around, but cutting firehouses is never an option. Closing a firehouse in one community creates a dangerous domino effect city-wide. Spreading rapid response teams out among more neighborhoods leaves people unprotected. This is a critical mistake and my colleagues and I will fight these cuts every step of the way. Sunnyside Street Fair Vendors Wanted JUNE 12 th Call

3 PAGE 3 Maloney Hails Extension of Health & Unemployment Insurance Coverage Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D- Manhattan, Queens) hailed the final passage yesterday of H.R. 4851, the Continuing Extension Act of 2010, legislation that, among other measures, extends unemployment and health insurance coverage for Americans who are out of work. The bill extends for two months provisions in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that provide for increases in the duration and amount of unemployment insurance benefits, and continues a 65% federal subsidy for COBRA health insurance premiums for people who are between jobs. President Obama signed the bill into law last night. Our economy is headed in the right direction, but millions of Americans are out of work due to the recession and need a little more help to make it through these tough times, said Rep. Maloney. Extending unemployment benefits helps families and gets money back into the economy quickly. While the passage of this bill is a victory for struggling families, putting Americans back to work remains the top priority of this Congress. T. R. STROKE IDENTIFICATION: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call the paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane s husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ... Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don t die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Remember the 3 steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)(For example, it is sunny out today. ) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher... A New Sign of a Stroke Stick out Your Tongue Another sign of a stroke is this: Ask the person to stick out his tongue... If the tongue is crooked, if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. DATED: March 31, 2010 Steven J.
