FREE HOLIDAY LIGHTS, A MONEY-SAVING COUPON PASSPORT, AND FREE TROLLIES ARE ALL IN STORE Sunnysiders are in for great fun along with great savings on holiday shopping this year, and it s all kicking off on November 21st with the Sunnyside Shines Holiday Lighting. Starting at 6 pm at the Sunnyside Arch on Queens Boulevard and 46th Street, the Fabulous Fezziwig Carolers, the Sunnyside Youth Drum Corps, the McManus Irish Dancers, and a host of elected officials will be ushering in a new season of holiday lights while the community enjoys free hot chocolate, candy canes, and visits with Santa Claus. But local businesses are particularly excited about another special debut taking place that evening: the Sunnyside Shines Shop Local Holiday Passport! This money-saving holiday coupon book gives numerous discounts to over 40 participating Sunnyside businesses and will be distributed to attendees at the Holiday Lighting. Participat- ing merchants include restaurants, beauty and nail salons, shoe stores, flower shops, jewelers, liquor stores, pharmacies, dental offices, opticians, and more. We are very happy with the fantastic variety and number of businesses taking part in this holiday discount initiative, says Jaime-Faye Bean, Executive Director at Sunnyside Shines. We see this as a wonderful gift to Sunnyside residents, who can save money and support our local small businesses while crossing holiday shopping off their lists. Most of the coupons in the Holiday Passport are valid from November 21st, the date of the booklet s launch at the Sunnyside Shines Holiday Lighting, through December 31st, giving shoppers ample time to take advantage of the many promotions offered. Every coupon includes a chance to win: shoppers surrender their coupons to the merchants upon redemption, and are entered to win over $500 in prizes from local retailers. Shoppers will also have the chance to board a free shopping trolley to do their Sunnyside shopping on Saturday, November 25th (Small Business Saturday) and Saturday, December 2nd. Sunnyside Shines is sponsoring a nostalgic Holiday Shopping Trolley Tour that will bring shoppers to designated spots along Greenpoint Avenue and Queens Boulevard to shop and dine in the district from 12-8 pm. Throughout both days, select businesses will be hosting free giftwrapping stations and kids craft stations, as well as giving out free samples to shoppers; a condensed performance of The Nutcracker Ballet by the Sunnyside Ballet Studio in Sunnyside s Bliss Plaza will add to the festive atmosphere. A lot of people want to do the right thing and support their neighbors by shopping locally for the holidays, but with our busy schedules it can sometimes be difficult to just get out and do it, says Bean. Our Holiday Passport, together with the festivities surrounding our Holiday Shopping Trolley Tour, turns shopping small and shopping locally into its own destina- tion and a great activity to bring the community together. Individuals wanting to join in on the fun are encouraged to visit Sunnyside Shines website at for more information; copies of the Holiday Passport can be requested by calling the Sunnyside Shines office at SAVINGS PROGRAM FOR SENIOR CITIZENS Building on the success of the Shop Sunnyside Program, the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement announces the launch of a pilot program to provide senior citizens with savings at business throughout its district. Silver Savings is a new coupon initiative that will provide seniors with a valuable money-savings coupon every two weeks via the Woodside Herald newspaper. Sunnyside Shines Executive Director Jaime-Faye Bean states, We hear from seniors in the neighborhood that they are concerned about affordability; our small business owners are responsive to the needs of seniors who are on fixed incomes, and are eager to secure their shopping loyalty. The Silver Savings program is our way of matching the needs of our seniors with the aspirations of our commercial district. Recognizing that print is the preferred medium of choice for many seniors, and recognizing the popularity of the weekly Woodside Herald, Sunnyside Shines chose to partner with the newspaper on the Silver Savings bi-weekly print coupon. The program s first merchant participant, Pearle Vision at Queens Boulevard in Woodside, is offering senior shoppers 30% off their entire purchase from November Bean says the lineup of future merchant participants for Silver Savings includes a diverse range of restaurants, service providers, and retailers. Sunnyside Shines will be holding a Silver Savings program kickoff at Sunnyside Community Services Center for Active Older Adults on Friday, November 3rd, from 10 am-2 pm. Sunnyside Shines staff will distribute Shop Sunnyside kits alongside copies of the Woodside Herald. Execrable werewolf, another side of James McKnight by Patricia Dorfman Thousands of Halloween celebrants crowded Sunnyside on Tuesday in search of candy, in what many discussed as an even higher numbers than last year s record crowds, despite Manhattan s terror attack and dropping temperatures. The lines were longer for free fish at Steve s Pets near the Sunnyside Arch. Streets were closed off in Sunnyside Gardens to allow spilling onto the streets. One of the NYPD 108th Precinct s Finest on duty predicted, I think Sunnyside will be famous for Halloween nationally by next year. Even those who stocked up seemingly sufficient amounts had out of candy signs on their doors the starting before 7PM. One costumed homeowner reported, the crowds were evenly spaced, starting at 3PM. The trick or treating began in the stores along Queens Blvd and Greenpoint even earlier. Many adults who gave out candy or accompanied children were dressed in costumes, and some householders put thought and expense into their outdoor decora- tions. Home Depot on Northern was selling giant dinosaur skeleton for $200. There were more police costumes than in earlier years, and colder weather may have reduced the number of some of the more wildly original costumes of the last two years. The area attracted, as in the last two years, Halloween tourists, or those who come from elsewhere in Queens to enjoy the atmosphere. Local parents with children and visitors seem to appreciate others giving their offspring attention and treats, in a holiday with uncomplicated rituals, centered on children. Halloween, appropriately for Woodside/ Sunnyside s large Irish population, began as Celtic pagan festival 2000 years ago. Unless it gets so popular in the future that as Yogi Beri put it, It s too crowded, nobody goes there anymore, Halloween here shows best our small town aspects and local embrace of time taken with few cell phones, or cares, being silly, indulging in sugar, and meeting and making new friends and neighbors. Kids from the neighborhood were invited along with the not-for-profit kids of Hour Children Program. Over a hundred children came and enjoyed face painting, a photo booth, candy and a costume contest together. Special thanks to the Knights of Columbus for hosting at their facility and to Rigo Cardoso of Pronto Car Service who sent cars to pick up and drop off the children from Hour Children so they could join in the festivities.
