1 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 1 SERVING SUNNYSIDE-WOODSIDE LONG ISL CITY VOL. 75, NO. 42 WOODSIDE, L.I.C., N.Y. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, CENTS Sunnyside Restaurants Deserve Their Pedestal The Long Island Business Development Trade Show, to be held November 18th at Terrace on the Park in Flushing Meadows, will bring 3500 potential diners by the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce booth. The Chamber theme this year puts our 25 restaurants on a pedestal, with the theme, Small town. Big City. Great Food. The day has come for the fifteen minutes, often quoted as the time it takes to get into Manhattan, to also apply to the journey coming from the other direction! But we need the old razzle dazzle, as Luke Adams, Chamber Marketing Director, expresses it, to get people over to the table to tell them about how good our restaurants are. He continues, The Chamber has commissioned a beautiful custom map giveaway including all eateries, so that customers can find each one. Rebecca Barker, local finance planner and Sunnyside Board member, joins Board Treasurer and Pronto Car Service owner, Rigoberto Cardoso in donating their time and effort at planning and hosting the Chamber table. Barker has been urging a specific restaurant theme for the trade show this year. I saw last year that restaurants from other areas of Queens who were savvy enough to present themselves well, were getting catering and corporate contacts as well as individual new customers. Every establishment is donating a gift certificate for dinner-for-two to be raffled off from one container to those attending, promoting all establishments equally, to lucky visitors who leave a business card. Every day brings more attention to our local eateries, where a restaurant can bring excellence to patrons for less than one would expect to pay for the same food in the the border town, Manhattan. Tim Chen, Chamber Board member and owner of the popular Zagat-rated and winner of Time Out s 2007 Best New Restaurant in Queens award, Quaint Restaurant, heads the trade show table committee and urges all restaurateurs or their representatives to come down and help present their eateries. The business-to-business trade show is free for pre-registrants and open from 9am until 2pm. October brought exciting news to Bliss Bistro owner, Maruf, shown in the photo Join us on the Lou Lodati FUNdraiser Bus Sponsored by Lowery Liquors to Sunday November 8th 9 AM Sharp with Tim Chen, and Lily Gavin, of Dazies. Bliss Bistro was selected as recommended by MICHELIN GUIDE 2010, showing that now even global recognition is coming to our area spots. Maruf said, I was stunned, I didn t even believe it. I was a busboy in Then my next thought was of deep gratitude to the people who support me every day. The trio s photo was from 2008, when they all created a gourmet lunch, serving it together, for $4 for art patrons at last yearπs Art at Queen of Angels Show by Sunnyside Artists (on for the Spring) donating the proceeds to the local food pantries. When I first came here, Maruf mentions, Lily Gavin, Tim Chen and Andrew Breslin of Sidetracks all sat down with me, encouraged me and gave me advice I am still following. Obviously the real achievement is to learn to survive and grow over a long period, but I feel as though I have real partners to try and make that happen. There is no competition. Lily Gavin of the famous local institution, Dazies Restaurant, adds, No one can eat at the same restaurant every night. We all need each other. It is clear we have already begun having a restaurant row, where people come here to dine. If they can t get into one spot, they can easily go Cost $38.00 Departing from Dazie s Restaurant (39-41 Queens Blvd) Purchase tickets at Lowery Liquors (40-14 Queens Blvd) All funds raised Benefit The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce & STAY IN THE COMMUNITY By Patricia Dorfman to another. The diverse cuisine all over Sunnyside makes all of us stronger. Chamber president and local attorney Ira Greenberg urges, We are getting great feedback on this campaign. Let s give our restaurants support. Next year, we will focus on another business sector. The bad news/ good news, he jokes, is that Sunnyside is no longer a secret. The good news is that Sunnyside is no longer a secret! The LICBDC table will not just focus on upscale restaurants. Chamber Member White Castle, for instance, in lieu of the dinner-for-two raffle certificate, is donating 300 free burger coupons. Neighbors and friends braved the overcast sky and December-like chill to enjoy and benefit from this colorful weekly event. Thanks, farmers! not know it, but White Castle fare is a huge draw, says Luke Adams. Business people from Manhattan mob us for those coupons! 3 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 3 Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan says Green Jobs, Green New York Law Will Stimulate Economy Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan (D- Queens) announced legislation the Assembly approved with unanimous, bipartisan support earlier this year authorizing the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to create and administer the green jobs, green New York program has been signed into law (A.8901). The program provides financing to communities, homes, small businesses and not-for-profits to help revitalize the economy in an energy-independent and environmentally responsible way. This program will simultaneously help revive New York s struggling economy and protect our environment, Assemblywoman Nolan said. We ll be tackling our economic and environmental problems headon by investing in green energy resources, while creating the jobs to support this new industry. Assemblywoman Nolan said the program would create workforce development opportunities for underemployed communities, and require a comprehensive report back to the governor and Legislature after 18 months. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) and New York Power Authority will be authorized, along with the municipal systems they serve, to participate in the project.the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) will provide $112 million in funding for residential and small business energy efficiency projects. RGGI is a cooperative effort by 10 Northeast and Mid- Atlantic states including New York to limit greenhouse gas emissions. A revolving loan fund will help commit resources with no less than 50 percent of the capital going to retrofit residential homes with green technology. The program will front the cost of the work, enabling property owners to afford energy efficient retrofits. Although property owners will repay the full cost over time, their total energy usage will be reduced by percent, and the loan payment on their energy bill will be less than what they saved. Assemblywoman Nolan said this program also includes some multi-family housing. There are many ways that homes can be retrofitted, which will actually save people money, Assemblywoman Nolan said. These include switching to more energyefficient lighting, installing programmable thermostats, plugging air leaks, tuning up heating and cooling systems, using ENERGY STAR fixtures such as furnaces and water heaters, reducing water use and switching to thermal and solar water-heating systems. Specific communities will be selected through a program opportunity notice or other form of competitive solicitation. Applicants will include local community groups in collaboration with contractors and local utilities, including LIPA, and labor and training organizations. An emphasis will be placed on geographic diversity, and preferential funding will be awarded to coalitions that include women- and minority-based businesses, as well as groups based in economically distressed communities. In addition, the law directs NYSERDA to include more provisions in its comprehensive home-assessment program to establish a sliding scale for payment of audit fees for residential projects. Assemblywoman Nolan said audit fees may be fully waived for income-qualified homeowners. If a business or residence chooses to participate in the energy-efficiency project or retrofit, any applicable audit costs may be capitalized in the repayment of the retrofit costs. The law directs up to $4 million to establish green jobs training programs throughout the state and requires NYSERDA and the state Labor Department to develop additional sources of job-training funds, Assemblywoman Nolan said. Protecting the environment can go hand-in-hand with employing New Yorkers with good jobs that help promote a healthy energy future, Assemblywoman Nolan said. This law is in step with President Barack Obama s groundbreaking $150 billion, decade-long plan to further develop clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar and to promote conservation. Like the president s plan, our goal is to create scores of new jobs in the green-energy sector and make the important energy-efficiency changes that will get our economy and our environment back on track. It s time for New York to become more energy and cost efficient, Assemblywoman Nolan said. Green jobs, green New York has the potential to improve our economy by helping businesses thrive while saving the consumer money in energy costs. 5 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2009 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 5 The Real Choice Before Us On November 3rd Our neighborhood saw a flurry of political activity this past summer, with several talented and qualified candidates vying for the Democratic nomination for City Council. Democrats chose Jimmy Van Bramer to be their nominee for City Council because he has spent his entire career trying to make life better for the residents of Western Queens. He won because he was able to stand up to the special interests who too often dominate politics: the corporations, developers, lobbyists and bad landlords. And he won because he talked about and worked on the issues that we all care about including good schools, safe, clean streets, caring for veterans and seniors, and affordable housing.(since winning the primary, Jimmy Van Bramer has continued to work tirelessly in all parts of the 26th district to earn your vote on November 3rd. And he s earned the support of his former primary opponents Deirdre Feerick and Brent O Leary because they know Jimmy is the only person now in the race who has worked in and for our community for years.(unfortunately, Jimmy s Republican opponent is trying to hide who he is. His literature and advertising don t mention that he is a Republican. And because he has no record of his own involvement in our community, he has resorted to running a negative and divisive campaign based on lies and distortions. Perhaps that s because Republican/ Conservative candidate Angelo Maragos doesn t really live in the district and never has. The truth is that Angelo has never voted in any election in the 26th Council District, or even in Queens. Sadly, Angelo didn t think he could run for office on Manhattan s East Side, where he has been residing, and moved to the district three months ago to run as a Republican. It s a free country, and people can run for office where they want, but shouldn t Angelo tell us the truth if he wants voters to support him? If Angelo can t be honest about who he is, why should voters trust him with decisions about our community?(elections should be about ideas and how we go about improving our neighborhoods. And we need candidates like Jimmy Van Bramer who have roots here and who have worked for our community. Jimmy was baptized at St. Teresa s, grew up using the library on Broadway and Steinway, went to Bryant High School and worked his way through St. John s University. He s fought to renovate all of our local libraries and build new ones, and he s served on Community Board 2 and fought graffiti with local groups for years. Van Bramer is who we need in the City Council a leader who has been there in the trenches for years - not someone who just showed up to run a negative and divisive campaign. Please remember to vote for our long-time neighbor and friend Jimmy Van Bramer for City Council on November 3rd! Friends of Jimmy Van Bramer Assemblyman Michael Gianaris (D- Queens) presents a Summer Reading Challenge certificate to P.S. 70 student Jessica Matev on Friday, October 16, Students who read with their parents at least 40 days during the summer receive a certificate from Assemblyman Gianaris. Not only does continued reading during the summer break ensure that children will maintain the progress they have made during the school year, but creating a routine in which parents and children set aside time to read together will reap academic benefits for years to come, said Assemblyman Gianaris.

You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home.
