By Patricia Dorfman Both local: Both are local organizations that seek to enhance the posture and fortunes of Sunnyside, but they are different organizations both legally and in practice, and we are fortunate to have both. (Note: This author is an enthusiastic and longtime member of the Chamber, so rosy slant alert.) Chamber Mission: The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce was founded in It is a voluntary, membership organization open to merchants, organizations and individuals. The bylaws commit to develop, encourage, promote and protect the commercial, professional, financial Congratulations to James Van Bramer on his win of the 26 th District City Council seat! and general business interests and ethics of the area known as Sunnyside and Woodside, to promote civic interests and the general welfare of the community. BID Mission: Kicking off its First Annual meeting in April of 2008, Sunnyside Shines BID, one of 64 in NYC, is an association of property owners within a set geographic location of our downtown, but also attempts to promote the wider area as beneficial to their mission. Many older BIDs in the NYC area, such as the Times Square Alliance, are legendary as rescuing and stabilizing an urban location, which has a wonderful impact on the broader area. Why apply for a BID? Sanctioned by NYC Small Business Services, BIDs are good for property owners because they assist in the value of the rental spaces. They are good for stores and residents because the funds supporting the BID are from a set assessment the organization can depend on, in our BID s case, providing a $300,000 budget, rather than the voluntary contributions of Chamber members, which are $125 for member entities of any size, and $25 for non-voting individuals. 3 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2009 THE WOODSIDE HERALD PAGE 3 A Message From Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan... Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have sacrificed for our freedom and pay them tribute with our support On Veterans Day, we pay respect to those who have fought for our country and to the men and women who continue to do battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each Nov. 11, we recognize the bravery and sacrifice of our nation s soldiers who ve fought in deadly arenas on faraway battlefields so that our freedom, our families and our nation are safe. The commemoration carries the purpose of President Woodrow Wilson s official Armistice Day proclamation in November 1919 to be filled with the solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation. We can make our silent tribute at The Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery, where the remains of brave soldiers from World War I, World War II and the Korean War now lie in honored repose; at the Marine Corps War Memorial, which stands as a symbol of heroism and perseverance; before the nearly 60,000 names of the dead engraved on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. There are also seven Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemeteries in New York State, including Albany Rural Cemetery Soldiers Lot; Bath National Cemetery; Calverton National OPHTHALMOLOGY - BOARD CERTIFIED - MEDICAL AND SURGICAL TREATMENT OF EYE DISEASES MANY INSURANCES ACCEPTED Hablamos español Cemetery; Cypress Hills National Cemetery; Long Island National Cemetery; Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery; and Woodlawn National Cemetery. However, responsibility asks us to go beyond a mere salute to our soldiers and demands that we address the increasingly complex circumstances of those who defend our families and our freedoms. Though we can never adequately repay these brave men and women, the Assembly is committed to providing our DEBRA S. New York State provides several benefits and services to our veterans and their families, like the state s Homes for Veterans Program, which offers fixedrate, low-interest mortgages to veterans and their spouses through the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA). New York State also offers the Veterans Property Tax Exemption to provide a partial exemption on real property taxes to wartime veterans, veterans who received expeditionary medals or the spouses of qualified veterans. To help the thousands of New Yorkers who have disrupted their lives to serve, the state lends its support to military families by awarding up to $500 in annual annuity payments to Gold Star parents of deceased veterans who meet income eligibility requirements; granting scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies at schools in New York State; providing burial allowances of up to $6,000; and restricting foreclosure actions. In addition, New York State recognizes the dedication and sacrifice of World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans who left school before graduation by awarding them with a high school diploma. Veterans Day marks our commitment to shared principles and ideals that bind us to the cause of democracy and the high price we pay to defend these ideals in lives lost, families shattered and dreams deferred. This day of remembrance provides us the opportunity to recognize the work and selflessness of those who defend our country and I will continue to ensure that our soldiers and veterans receive the help they so rightly deserve. 4 PAGE 4 (Continued from Front Page ) THE WOODSIDE HERALD What is the difference Between Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District And The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce? How did the BID happen? Sunnyside Shine BID Executive Director Alyssa Bonilla was the guest speaker at a Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside dinner meeting at Sidetracks Restaurant Oct. 20, where she answered questions about the BID. Bonilla explained that a BID is approved by the City when more than 50 per cent of property owners in an application area who seek BID status are in favor, in a SBS application process. John Vogt, a White Castle System executive, Chairman of Sunnyside Shines and also on the Chamber board, said We finalized the effort to form the BID when I was President of the Chamber, so the BID came out of the Chamber. Where do BID funds come from? The properties owner must pay their assessments according to a formula based on property value and frontage. The retailers within BID geography properties automatically become part of the BID and pay an additional assessment in their rent. For instance, one medium sized retailer we spoke with on Greenpoint pays approximately $35 per month, or $420 per year. Who guides the organizations? The Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is elected by the membership from among themselves, and serve two year terms, said Lily Gavin of Dazies Restaurant, on the Board in both organizations. Sunnyside Shines has yet to determine term limits for its officers, whose appointments were part of the approval application. Both boards are un- Join us on the Lou Lodati FUNdraiser Bus Sponsored by Lowery Liquors to Sunday November 8th 9 AM Sharp Cost $38.00 Departing from Dazie s Restaurant (39-41 Queens Blvd) Purchase tickets at Lowery Liquors (40-14 Queens Blvd) paid. Local officers of the BID also include Artie Weiner, LIC Building, Steve Fleischer, Ownership Realty, and Christopher Winchester of Pickman Realty. Those serving in both organization boards are Anthony Lodati, Lowery Liquors, Gerry Lederman, Triad Management and Maureen Lynch, Lynch Funeral Home. Why do we need both? The Sunnyside area has many blooming businesses, organizations, and initiatives in and outside of the BID geography, which rely on the longstanding strength and proven record of the Sunnyside Chamber, said Ira Greenberg, local attorney and Chamber president. Our open membership means that members can elect any member to guide the organization and its future, and volunteers can add expertise. Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce board members, in addition to the above, but not on the BID board are, Patrice Lee of April Glass, Rigoberto Cardoso of Pronto Car Service, Diane Ballek of 108 Community Council, Becky Barker of MetLife and financial advisor, Bruce Bendell of Major Auto, Seth Bornstein of LaGuardia College, Tim Chen of Quaint, Mohammed Daud of Best Western City View, Michael Kearney of Kearney Home Care, Grace King of Citibank, Vincent Renda of Edward Jones, Marlene R. Sabba of Sabba Printing Company, Sherilyn Jo Sabba of the Woodside Herald, Roel van der kooi of the Lions Club, (and this author). What does the Chamber do? Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce holds Business Card exchanges at member businesses to assist individual member promotion, provides an online directory and member web pages, holds special events, and monthly networking luncheons on the second Tuesday of every month at 12:30. The luncheon meetings, with speakers of interest, are at Dazies Restaurants, cost $20, and are open to anyone interested. LaGuardia Community College, at Thomson Avenue, kindly donates chamber offices. (To see the fuller line up of Chamber activities, see article, Good Things Coming in Sunnyside. ) What does Sunnyside Shines do? Bonilla explained that the basic mission of every BID could be described as fourfold, Cleaner streets, enhanced security, marketing and holiday lights. The BID rents an office is at rd Street. (To see a fuller line-up of BID activities, see article, Good Things Coming in Sunnyside. ) As Sponge Bob would say, It s all good! For a young organization, less than two years old, Sunnyside Shines shows strong accomplishments. The Sunnyside Chamber, at 66, is an institution. So yes, there are many differences in the management structure and frequent competition as occurs in all organizations populated by Homo sapiens. But from the point of view that everyone wants Sunnyside to thrive and prosper, having two organizations caring strongly and working hard means, in the big picture, there is no downside for Sunnyside. The jury will be blind judges will be apart during voting and photographer identification absent for fairness. A call for entries, rules and the application form may be downloaded from the Chamber site in mid-december. If the contest is successful, the event will be repeated. Coupons: Alyssa Bonilla, Executive Director of Sunnyside Shines BID also announces a full roster for Sunnyside Shines has already begun a coupon program free for merchants, as happy shoppers have noted. Merchants, contact Bonilla at for more information. #7 Queens Arts Express: The popular design-our-logo contest sponsored by Sunnyside Shines, furnished the occasion for a wine and cheese all-logo-art showing last month at BID offices. Bonilla is now working to add Sunnyside to the new Queens Art Express, a borough-wide arts festival along the No. 7 line planned for June Increasing the visibility of the arts in Sunnyside is considered by many to be a practical move to improve the area. When the artists are evident, success follows, says Gerald Lederman, of Triad Management, Board members of the BID and Chamber, who also serves as Treasurer of the Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside. To add your arts organization to the roster, contact Queens Art Express coordinator David Bromley at , or locally, Alyssa Bonilla at Art at Queen of Angels: As Good Things Coming in Sunnyside part of the local offerings of Queens Art Express 2010, the Chamber will be one of the sponsors of the Sunnyside Artists III show in June of 2010, hosted by Pastor Brian Dowd, at the Meeting Hall of Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church. A few other Sunnyside religious venues have expressed interest in adding to the arts festivities- more word on that later. Information on the Sunnyside Artists show or an application will be available online in January at sunnysideartists.org. and by mail from the Chamber. Becky Barker, financial advisor and board member of two artists groups as well as the Chamber, will chair Sunnyside Artists III. Signs of the holidays: Most of us have noticed the beautiful holiday lights and lovely silver decorations on Greenpoint and Queens Boulevard already put up by Sunnyside Shines for everyone to enjoy. They help create a storybook appeal for Sunnyside, give our residents something to be delighted by, and provide an enticement to #7 and road commuters to stop by. The Chamber will announce its usual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in December. Tours: The Chamber is planning a walking tour in the landmarked Sunnyside Gardens, working with local historians, court associations and organizations, and tour givers of the past. Down the road is also planned a Calvary Cemetery Walk, an odd but fascinating favorite destination of yesteryear. A rail-themed Sunnyside excursion about Sunnyside is also planned, since Sunnyside Yards, the #7 line, and Eastside Access burrowing underground make this area a draw for train enthusiasts. (Perhaps a lucky winner can meet a sand hog! ) Award: This winter, the Chamber will announce the recipient of an award given to a person each year, either from the past or present, whom embodies the best of the Sunnyside area, bridges communities, and gets it done. Historical finery: The Sunnyside Chamber is looking for a costume expert to speak at a benefit to kick off the Sunnyside Gardens Tour in the spring, exhibiting the original 1800 s bridal gown of the daughter of Neziah Bliss, also worn by two additional Bliss descendants. Got a FIT, museum or Parson expert friend? Contact Luke Adams, Chamber Marketing Director, at Six local history lovers, including Dorothy Morehead, now own the dress. Our restaurants on a pedestal: On Wednesday, November 18, the Chamber will be taking a table at the Long Island City Business Development Corporation business-to-business trade show, to get our 26 amazing restaurants in front of the 3,500 visitors at the expo in Flushing Meadows, with the theme, Small town. Big City. Great food with a play on the Chamber motto, Small town in the big city. The Sunnyside Chamber is often called, one of the most active chambers in NYC, with no small thanks to Luke Adams. Queens Tourism Council head of the Borough President s office, Theresa Osborne comments, Luke Adams and I traveled all over the country and state to drum up support and he was able to really generate friendly connections everywhere. I really accomplished amazing things with him. He knows restaurants, he knows promotion, and how to get people excited and keep them together. To reach Adams, call or Member table committee chair Tim Chen of Quaint Restaurant at To register for the actual trade show, which is FREE from 9am till 2pm, purchase luncheon tickets, buy a journal ad, or learn more, go online to licbdc.org, or call Indra Smith at x 21. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY. SUMMONS AND COMPLAINT YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME. IF YOU FAIL save your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services NOTICE NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this summons and complaint by serving a copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you can lose your home. Speak to an attorney or go to the court where your case is pending for further information on how to answer the summons and protect your property. Sending a payment to your mortgage company will not stop this foreclosure action. YOU MUST RESPOND BY SERVING A COPY OF THE ANSWER ON THE ATTORNEY FOR THE PLAINTIFF (MORTGAGE COMPANY) AND FILING THE ANSWER WITH THE COURT. DATED: October 8, 2009 Steven J. Baum, P.C., Attorney(s) For Plaintiff(s), 220 Northpointe Parkway, Suite G, Amherst, NY The law firm of Steven J.
