1 SOCL 7591 SEMINAR ON ECOLOGY OF CRIME Fall 2017 Stubbs 0026 Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. Professor: Michael S. Barton, Ph.D. 139 Stubbs Hall Office Hours: Wednesdays 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Thursdays 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and by appointment. INTENT This seminar focuses the importance of the structure of communities and neighborhoods for the sociological study of crime. We will discuss a selected set of books and articles that address issues related to the definition and measurement of communities and neighborhoods, the major theories used to explain variation in crime across communities and neighborhoods and the importance of macro level processes for neighborhood crime patterns. Our objective is to have an interesting and informative discussion, one in which we all learn something. GRADING Seminar participation (20%) o You are expected to attend all class meetings AND participate regularly in classroom discussions. o You are expected to share three discussion questions with the class by 5 p.m. the day before each class meeting. Discussion co-lead (30%) o You are expected to co-lead discussion two times throughout the course. o Each discussion co-lead must be with a different collaborator. o You must submit a 2-3 page paper that critically analyzes the content of the readings for the week that you are the discussion leader. This paper must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the Thursday following the session that you were the discussion lead. Research paper (40%) o Options for the course paper include: An extensive review of the research literature in a specific area that includes a critique and synthesis of existing research A proposal for an empirical research paper A well-developed empirical paper Work on your thesis or dissertation project. o Deadlines Paper topic and the identification of which option you are choosing must be submitted in an by the start of week 3. Final paper must be submitted electronically by Noon on May 5 th.

2 Paper presentation (10%) o You must develop and present a minute presentation about your paper. Course paper presentations will occur during the last two class meetings.
