In 2003, when SNV began its work in tourism, there were 636,361 international tourist arrivals. In 2010 this number had increased to 2,513,028 visitors; an almost four-fold growth1. With tourism businesses expanding and generating direct and indirect jobs, it directly contributed US$287 million to the Lao economy in 2010, or 4.5% of total GDP.

Later the Laos government extended the system considerably in the hope of achieving education for all. The University of Laos was established in 1996 as a re-grouping of a number of existing colleges and institutes. Because the area of employment law is quite vast, this is only a brief discussion of the main topics under the new Labor Law.
