CERTIFICATE IN AMERICAN CAPITALISM DALLAS
A LETTER FROM THE DEAN For more information, visit capitalismcertificate.cox.smu.edu For more than 40 years, I have been fascinated with the growth of America s economy. Wars, recessions, industry migrations, technological innovations and changing demographics have all played critical roles in its evolution. If we are to navigate today s business landscape and see how it might shift in the future, we should understand our past and the road that led us to where we are now. It was this passion for the U.S. economy and its remarkable achievements that led me to develop a course for our BBA and MBA students called The Evolution of American Capitalism. Due to the popularity of the class and interest expressed by those outside our classroom, we have decided to introduce a program for business leaders and interested citizens called the Certificate in American Capitalism. In only three days, this program provides an overarching analysis of the evolution of American capitalism and the global challenges ahead. Specifically, the course content focuses on the following: America s decline as an industrial power and the explosion of manufacturing in emerging markets The changing face of the American workforce and our dwindling educational advantage Growing inequality in the U.S. economy and the widening gap between rich and poor The impact of growth in government spending and taxation on America s competitive position Winners and losers in the American marketplace as a result of competitive global pressures By earning the Certificate in American Capitalism, you can experience the esteemed business education offered here at SMU Cox while also broadening your understanding of today s economic environment in its historical context. I look forward to seeing you in the classroom soon. Albert W. Niemi Dean, SMU Cox School of Business
COURSE CURRICULUM Structural Change in the American Economy The Rise and Fall of American Manufacturing The Automobile Industry: Creative Destruction at Work Labor Unions: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly The Technological Revolution in Agriculture Human Resource Issues: The Changing Face of the American Workforce Immigration and the U.S. Economy The Changing Economic Situation for Minorities The Evolving Role of Women in the Workforce The Disappearance of the Middle Class Rich and Poor: The Growth of Inequality in the U.S. Global Competition and America s Future The Constitution of the United States of America The Growth of Government and the Drift Toward Socialism Growth in Entitlement Programs and Defense Spending Competition in America: The Rise and Fall of Cities and States Texas vs. California: Why Texas is Winning the Battle for Jobs Challenges to America s Global Standing
PROGR AM FACULTY The certificate program is taught by Dr. Albert W. Niemi, dean of the SMU Cox School of Business, and adapted from his popular BBA and MBA course The Evolution of American Capitalism. Niemi s areas of expertise include economic growth, economic forecasting and American business history. He has taught more than 15,000 students and consistently has been recognized for distinguished teaching. Niemi has written six books and more than 200 articles for leading academic journals and business periodicals. Read his full bio here: cox.smu.edu/web/albert-w-niemi PROGRAM DETAILS SMU Main Campus February 24-26, 2015 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PAYMENT OPTIONS The program fee is $1,500, which includes tuition, all course materials, parking, breakfast, coffee break and lunch. SMU will not discriminate in any employment practice, education program or educational activity on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, genetic information or veteran status. SMU s commitment to equal opportunity includes nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Upon completing the Certificate in American Capitalism, you will understand the following: What happened when the U.S. Constitution left economic power in the hands of state governments that are determining the winners and losers in the fight for jobs today How free trade and global competition are negatively impacting American manufacturing The impact of job losses in agriculture and manufacturing on the decline of America s middle class The gap between rich and poor in America and why it s greater than it has ever been How American citizens became the most heavily taxed people in the world The earnings gap between men over women and its roots in historical differences in career paths The earnings gap between white and Asian Americans over Hispanic and African Americans and the ties to racial and ethnic differences in educational attainment Why Texas has the best business climate in America Leila Redwine (MBA 13) Banker, JP Morgan Private Banking Dean Niemi is a skilled and knowledgeable professor who facilitates important debate on where America has been and what to expect in America s future. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for a better understanding of the macro factors that have shaped America into the country it is today.
