1 CULMINATING ACTIVITY DECADE PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION: In this activity students will work in groups of up to four, and focus on ONE DECADE IN CANADIAN HISTORY covered during the course. The group will be responsible for developing knowledge of significant issues, events, figures, forces, and values that reflect the Canadian Identity of their assigned decade. Working within their groups, students will select the key events and happenings that capture the feelings and images of the "defining moments" from their specific time period. Students will then research them further, and produce a presentation and a report. See the following pages for a more complete task description. The collected and original produced materials will be presented in front of the class as the group will display their graphic pieces, and be asked to read some of their written work. All students are to be involved in this presentation to their peers. They are individually responsible for their specific contributions to the display. Assessment will be based on summative teacher evaluation, both in a group setting, and as individuals. Make sure you use the Evaluation Rubric included as a guideline to the requirements of this project. Included in this package is a list of topics, key events, and key figures for each specific decade. (You will find it posted to Google Classroom). Some class time will be given for this assignment. Students are expected to take full advantage of this time.

2 CULMINATING ACTIVITY DECADE PRESENTATION TASK REQUIREMENTS After forming groups, students will be assigned their decade and should begin to research their decade by dividing up the following tasks equally amongst the group members. All must work cooperatively to achieve maximum success with the culminating activity. Knowledge Activities 1. Develop a GRAPH showing immigrations trends during the various years of the time period. Indicate the major groups of people from around the world coming to Canada. Write a paragraph 3 to 5 sentences long, explaining these trends. 2. Identify and create three SYMBOLS on a poster or Bristol board that represents the Canadian Identity during the time period. On the back, write a paragraph 2 to 3 sentences long, explaining how the symbols reflect the Canadian way of life. 3. Design a POSTER on a prominent economic, political, or social issue during the decade. Ensure you reflect on how the issue shaped Canadian Identity. Thinking and Inquiry Activities 4. Select two significant Canadians from your decade that have shaped the Canadian Identity. Write a 2 page long BIOGRAPHY on each person. For example, select a scientist, politician, military figure, Native Canadian. A picture must be included. 5. Write a BIOGRAPHY 2 to 3 pages long, on a Canadian author, artist, musician or dancer from your decade. Briefly explain how this person has added to the culture and identity of the arts in Canada. A picture must be included. 6. Construct a timeline of all the important Canadian events (news, pop culture, fashion etc ) during that decade. Give a brief description per event (2 3 sentences) Application Activities 7. Write a LETTER to a Canadian politician (of that time frame) on an area of concern from your time period. 8. Write 3 DIARY ENTRIES as if you were a recent Canadian immigrant living in your decade. The entries should include and discuss your experiences in this new country and what you think it means to be Canadian. 9. As a group, creatively develop a skit of a historical event or a key character from your time period. Your presentation should demonstrate how that event or person helped shape the unique development of Canada. A script must be included.
